Charles Cornell was last seen in the spring of 1986. His parents drove to his apartment to check up on him. They found the apartment in disarray and there was no sign of their son. They reported this suspicious scene to investigators. Due to some confusion, he wasn't officially listed as missing until June of 2016.

Battle Creek man reported missing, 30 years after disappearance

Hattie Cornell, Chuck's mother, says the last time she saw him was his 30th birthday at his apartment in Battle Creek.

She says her Army veteran son was having a rough year.

"He just seemed like he was distant," Hattie recalls.

And after that visit, she says, Chuck stopped returning their calls. So they drove over to check on him.

"We saw the apartment had been destroyed. It was completely empty but there were holes in the wall," Hattie explains. "We didn't know what to think about that. He was nowhere. No sign of him."

I saw that someone on another site mentioned this John Doe as a possible match:

A Battle Creek man last seen by relatives in 1986 has been identified using DNA. Michigan State Police say Charles Cornell died along an Arkansas highway in 1989...

Photos, medical and dental records and fingerprints remained on file in Arkansas, but the cases weren't linked until Cornell's relatives submitted DNA.

Wow, so where was he for 3 years between when he went missing and when he got hit by the truck? And how'd he end up 900 miles away?

Rhetorical questions, of course, but such an interesting mystery. Just goes to show that when someone turns up missing under violent circumstances (apartment in disarray, holes in wall) it doesn't necessarily mean right off the bat that they are deceased.

It's definitely a good reminder to widen our net, so to speak, when considering dates.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Cornell.

I am Chuck's niece and have the same questions. There was years between his disappearance and his death. What brought him that far away from home and how come no contact??? Many unanswered questions still out there.
