Final witness takes stand in Na'Ziyah Harris disappearance, murder case

The prosecution called their final witness Wednesday in the preliminary hearing for Jarvis Butts. He's accused of sexually assaulting and killing 13-year-old Na'Ziyah Harris.

On Jan. 8, 2025, a Detroit Police Department sergeant testified that the last person she contacted before going missing was Butts. She also testified Butts called his business partner while he was in jail to move a phone he allegedly hid in a car.

Details of Disappearance​

Na'ziyah was last seen in Detroit, Michigan on January 9, 2024. She took the bus to school at J.E. Clark Preparatory Academy that day, and while in school she used her tablet to send a message to Jarvis Ramon Butts. He is the father of Na'ziyah's aunt's five children; a photo of him is posted with this case summary.

After school, Na'ziyah met up with Butts and one of his coworkers at an auto repair shop on Connor. The three of them went to Ypsilanti, Michigan together, then returned to the auto repair shop. That evening, Butts checked into a hotel. Na'ziyah never returned home and has never been heard from again.

Several items of the clothing she was last seen wearing, along with her school identification card and her earphones, were found in the area of 7 Mile and Berg Road near the Rouge River. The clothing was damaged in such a way to suggest a struggle.

She has no history of running away from home, and no history of truancy from school. At the time of her disappearance, she lived with her adoptive mother, who is her biological grandmother. Her mother began searching for her when she hadn't returned home by 6:00 p.m., but she did not call the police until the next morning.

When he was initially questioned about Na'ziyah, Butts said he didn't know her very well, although he admitted she texted him and that she sometimes did odd jobs at his auto repair shop. He said he hadn't seen her since late December or early January, and denied having seen her on the day of her disappearance, something later proven to be untrue. In October 2024, Butts was charged with first-degree premeditated murder, child sexually abusive activity, and criminal sexual conduct in the second degree in her case.

He has also been charged with the sexual abuse of two other girls in unrelated cases dating back to 2012. One alleged victim was between 8 and 10 years old; the other was between 4 and 6 years old. The prosecution called him a "serial child rapist" and said he had a pattern of behavior where he would target and befriend women in order to get access to their daughters so he could abuse them.

Beginning in September 2022, Butts started sending Na'ziyah sexually explicit texts, and she sent him sexually explicit photos of her self. In September 2023, she told Butts she had missed her menstrual period. By November, Butts was making online searches about abortions and drinking red antifreeze. Authorities stated his DNA was found on Na'ziyah's clothing, and his cellular phone records indicate that between 11:40 p.m. on January 10 and 1:34 a.m. on January 11, he was in the area where the clothing was later found.

Investigators believe Butts may have attempted a clandestine abortion on Na'ziyah that caused her death. He is awaiting trial in her case. Na'ziyah has never been found, but foul play is suspected in her case due to the circumstances involved.

Na’Ziyah was failed by many adults and systems, but I think the judge makes a bad point here and is putting out misinformation.

13 y/o girls often have inconsistent periods, and I wouldn’t expect a young teen to be sharing that much about their period if they could avoid it. She was also presumably only a couple of months pregnant, and likely not visibly pregnant. I don’t think it would be so hard for Na'Ziyah to hide her pregnancy if that’s what she was trying to do. And I especially don’t think a woman who has given birth has some special ability to divine when someone is pregnant.

Thank you so much for tagging me. We were talking about this in our office, and we are just gutted and disturbed. To the last point, young people, especially with hormones in food etc, their periods come earlier, and inconsistently. I agree with that statement in that the pregnancy could easily be hidden. The real question the judge should be asking is " Who thought that having a convicted sex offender living in a house with infant and adolescents, was a good idea? How does this benefit the emotional, physical and psychological well being of all involved? How is there not enough supervision to notice/ uncover a sexual relationship taking place between a middle aged man, and an 11 yr old adolescent?"

I know that was three, but I really want to know. Everyone failed, and this girl paid with her life.

I snapped the red and black shoe her honor referred back to in her judgment while rewatching testimony but cannot remember what she said about it.
The border patrol officer who found it testified that it was just the bodysuit with this shoe rolled up.

Did she have a change of shoes w her? Not uncommon.. but it's also crossing my mind that JB may have staged the scene? Idk, I hope someone finds those poor babies! Ik his phone pinged there for a good amount of time.

All of this is true however, in September 2023 she told the monster she hadn't had her cycle in MONTHS and then again in November, she expressed being afraid to get a F in PE because the baby was making it hard to do stuff, or something similar.

By Dec./January, she was more than likely good and pregnant.

Sidebar: in the exchange re: missing her cycle, she said she hadnt been on since she was in the hospital. I wonder what she was there for. Makes me sick to imagine.

Also, Im wondering if the prosecution is going to even bring her pregnancy to the floor in court or if it is just about Na'Ziyah bc although how the baby got there was abhorrent- it's two lives he ended prematurely- imo.

If they do, I wonder have they narrowed down how far along she could've been. I am really thinking she was 6-8months pregnant.

It's so sad and disgusting to think all that he inflicted on her and all of the others!

I'm also confused on how they met up. NH texted the monster from the school device telling him to remember to be there after 3 - but King testified to them just "bumping into" her on the way back from the auto parts store. I have to see if he said a time.
The phone records show him at the shop at 4:09pm I'm thinking she was already with him. It seems she got off the bus and walked down to the shop in the opposite direction of her house per a really good YouTube I caught.

So disturbing!

OP says last seen near Outer Drive.....(awfully strange coincidence)

Workers were at the home in the 19700 block of Woodingham near Outer Drive renovating the house when they found the remains buried in a shallow grave around 1 p.m.

It is unclear if the remains belonged to an adult or child. According to police, the remains appear to be from a person who had a small stature, so they are looking at both missing adults and children.

(Any Sleuths happen to know if Butts had any connection to Woodingham home?)
