At a meeting, the men discussed attacking a Michigan State Police facility, and in a separate conversation one defendant suggested shooting up the governor’s vacation home, authorities allege.

An FBI-led investigation identified six men who were trying to plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

The investigation involved multiple informants and undercover FBI personnel.

Based on court documents, the FBI was well aware of the activities of the men charged Thursday and there does not seem to have been an imminent threat posed to Gov. Whitmer, a Democrat...

Two people named in the complaint, Adam Fox and Barry Croft, gathered with approximately 13 other people from several states in Dublin, Ohio on June 6.

“The group talked about creating a society that followed the U.S. Bill of Rights and where they could be self-sufficient,’’ the criminal complaint states. “They discussed different ways of achieving this goal from peaceful endeavors to violent actions.’’

Several members talked about “murdering tyrants or taking a sitting governor,’’ the complaint states.

The militia group was brought to the attention of the FBI in March when members were attempting to obtain the addresses of local police officers.

The criminal complaint “said their best opportunity to abduct Gov. Whitmer would be when she was arriving at, or leaving, either her personal vacation home or the governor’s official summer residence.’’

After kidnapping Whitmer, the group “would remove her to a secure location in Wisconsin for trial.’’

More details of the investigation were expected to be revealed at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

'Elaborate plans' to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, officials detail

''The FBI was already tracking the militia in March after a local police department learned members were trying to obtain addresses of local law-enforcement officers, the FBI agent wrote.

“At the time, the FBI interviewed a member of the militia group who was concerned about the group’s plans to target and kill police officers, and that person agreed to become a (confidential source),” the agent wrote.

In late June, Fox posted on Facebook a video in which he complained about the state’s judicial system and COVID-19 restrictions on gyms operating in Michigan.

“Fox referred to Governor Whitmer as ‘this tyrant b----,’ and stated, ‘I don’t know, boys, we gotta do something,” according to the court affidavit. “You guys link with me on our other location system, give me some ideas of what we can do.”

Whitmer's office did not immediately comment Thursday morning. The governor is set to address the media at 3 p.m.

In recent weeks, the state-owned Michigan governor's residence received security upgrades, including the construction of a new perimeter fence.''

“Fox described it as a ‘Snatch and grab, man. Grab the (expletive) Governor. Just grab the (expletive). Because that that point, we do that, dude — it’s over,’” the criminal complaint reads in part.

The plan was to take Whitmer to Wisconsin and hold a kangaroo court trial for treason.

According to the document, the militia members talked about storming the state Capitol in Lansing, armed with Molotov cocktails and engaging with police, but Garbin shut that idea down.

It was then the focus turned to the governor’s vacation home. The suspects allegedly figured out where that house was and went there at least twice to scope it out.

The FBI agent said Fox bought a Taser to use in the attack. Garbin suggested blowing up a nearby bridge in an effort to slow the police response.

During one test, authorities said, the suspects managed to successfully detonate a bomb with shrapnel wrapped around it.''
