Meteorologist to Metro Detroit: Enjoy last warm day

Tom Greenwood, The Detroit News 7:48 a.m. EST November 11, 2014

The weather wizards at the National Weather Service have some advice for those living in southeastern Michigan: Get out and enjoy the warm temperatures while you can.

“Tuesday will be the last warm day for awhile,” meteorologist Sara Schultz said. “The high in the metro area will be about 60 degrees, but then we get a cold front moving in this afternoon that will drop temperatures into the 32 to 29 degree range.”

The warm weather is due to balmy winds coming up from the South, but unfortunately, they’ll be chased out of the metro area by a low-pressure system that will keep temperatures in the mid 30s through the weekend and into next week...

“Incidentally, the record for the lowest daytime high of 18 degrees was also set on the same date in 1880,” Kulik said...

"No, that loud boom you heard wasn’t a gunshot. Nor was it an earthquake that rattled your windowpanes.

“Other people described it like a truck had literally hit their house,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson.

That sound was likely the result of a frost quake — a weather phenomenon that residents of Southwestern Ontario could be hearing more about as the winter chill sets in across the region.

Despite Coulson’s official title — he is the federal agency’s warning-preparedness specialist — Coulson said frost quakes are fairly benign. They occur when a patch of ground that is saturated with moisture freezes and the underground ice cracks, sometimes because it melts and then freezes again, causing expansion."
