This thread is to discuss the case of George Floyd. It is not a thread to discuss racism in general.

Unless your post relates to this case specifically, it is off topic and will be removed.

ADMIN NOTE:

Please stay on topic by discussing the trial without introducing the peripheral matters of riots and protests, BLM, all the extraneous chatter about racial inequities and other social justice issues.

We acknowledge, we understand how critical this trial is in relation to those issues, but we need to stay focused on this case and the trial itself. Yes there is overlap with those important issues, but the thread is specifically dedicated to discussing the George Floyd case and the Derek Chauvin trial and not all those other matters.

If members wish to generally speculate on how such issues may have influenced either the victim or the accused, that's fine, but please don't bring in specifics related to all those other matters and derail the thread with social justice issues that will not be resolved in this discussion.

Thanks !!

ADMIN NOTE:

To say simply that GF possibly had fear as a black man was left as reasonable speculation that doesn't warrant dissecting it any further. IF GF had that fear, surely we can all understand where it may have originated.

Quite a few posts had to be removed due to general back and forth bickering. There is no way to edit that many posts and be able to retain context so a lot of responses got removed in the process.

Charges changed (6/3/20) to 2nd degree murder-unintentional-while committing a felony, 3rd degree murder-perpetrating eminently dangerous act (3rd degree charge was dismissed on 10/22/20 & reinstated on 3/11/21) & evincing depraved mind & 2nd degree manslaughter-culpable negligence creating unreasonable risk. $500K bond, reset (6/8/20) @ $1.25M & $1M with conditions. Experts anticipate the trial could last 2-4 weeks. Jurors: 12 & 2 alternates (9 women & 5 men). Jurors will be sequestered during deliberations. None of the other officers will be testifying at Chauvin’s trial. The State rested their case on 4/13/21 & had 38 witnesses. Defense started their case on 4/13/21.

Bond conditions & court info 12/19/20 thru 3/23/21 & jury selection (3/9 thru 3/23) & Day 1 to 11 of Trial (3/29 to 4/12/21) reference post #10 here:
MN - George Floyd, 46, died in police custody, Minneapolis, 25 May 2020 #15 - Chauvin Trial Day 12

4/13/21 Tuesday, Trial Day 12: Each morning of the trial the Judge as set aside 9am CT/10am ET for any motions/issues with attorneys.
Motion hearing: Nelson wants to show parts of Minneapolis Park police officer Chang's body cam footage. Chang responded to the scene & was monitoring Hill & Hall at Floyd's car. Attorney Nelson fighting for officer Chang evidence, specifically relating to group of bystanders on sidewalk. Were they a risk/threat to officers dealing with Floyd? Defense has some editing to do on Police officer Chang's body camera video. Specifically cutting out Floyd’s personal info we are told is clearly visible on in-squad computer screen. Nelson asks for 10 minutes to do that. Judge says jury will come in for 9:30am start. Other AM developments to look for: State formally resting case after some book keeping on exhibits, etc. Defense potentially asking Judge Cahill for a directed verdict, arguing state failed to prove charges. The Judge came back from break & rules on the motions from this morning regarding Hall & his testimony. The Judge is denying the defense’s motion for the state to provide explanation as to why they are not offering Hall immunity. The state’s position on granting immunity is not reviewable by the court. With regard to Hall's testimony itself, the court rules that none of the questions Hall answered in his statement to BCA are admissible. Case law shows that any question asked of a person which MIGHT incriminate him are invocable. And the questions answered previously are against penal interest, but are also self-serving with regards to his own criminal liability & involvement & therefore untrustworthy. There are other witnesses that can testify to what Hall would testify to, and have, so Hall's testimony or lack thereof does not infringe on Chauvin’s right to a complete defense. Morries Hall officially taking the 5th. State rests their case. State had 38 witnesses.
Defense witnesses: Nelson on direct for all: 1) Scott Creighton, former MPD LE; Judge Cahill tells jurors they’re going to hear about Floyd’s 5/6/19 arrest. Judge tells them, this is “not” to be used as character evidence against Floyd. Its limited intent is to show potential impact of opioids on Floyd. Eldridge on cross. Re-direct & re-cross. 2) Michelle Moseng, EMS paramedic for Hennepin Co. (now retired). Judge Cahill gives jurors the same notice he gave prior to Creighton. Moseng took health vitals at this time (5/7/19). Eldridge on direct. 3) Shawanda Hill, was with Floyd & Hall in the car on 5/25/20. Cross by Frank & re-direct. 4) Officer Peter Change, MPD LE. Responded to Cup Foods on 5/25/20. He self-assigned after hearing dispatchers call for backup. Played for jurors Chang’ body cam video. Frank on cross. 5) MPD Officer Nicole Mackenzie (recalled by defense). Medical support coordinator re excited delirium. Frank on cross. 6) Barry Brodd, use of force expert. Says Chauvin used reasonable use of force. (Also testified in Chicago cop trial of Jason Van Dyke). Schleicher on cross. And re-direct. And re-cross. Judge Peter Cahill is sending the jury home with first time admonishment of do not talk to anyone & do not watch the news.
Cahill says the attorneys have some legal matters to discuss now. Court remains in session without the jury. Issues: Frank: Clean up exhibit issues. Exhibits. #15 (Williams) formally offered-received. #922 thru #951 (Dr. Tobin) were for demonstrative purposes only; will not be going back to the jurors. #941 should be #921-excited delirium was for demonstrative purposes only-not going back to the jurors. #269-precinct map (Chief A) formally offered-received. #110 (Defense’s policy training guide)-formally offered-received. #255 (from Keung’s BC shot @ 8:19:35; Steiger). (Defense doesn’t have a copy)-formally offered-received. #122 (MPD crisis intervention)-formally offered-received. #624 & #628 was to refresh recollection of witness-formally offered-received. Defense brings up Milestone Camera #11 video. Says was choppy & wants actual exhibit to go back to jurors. State says it was cropped & was a computer issue. & was part (sub) of exh. #42 (Rugel) about 9 minutes long full video. Arguing about sending “player” in with video. Judge: if it runs smoothly won’t send in player, if choppy player will be sent to the jurors. Scheilcher: about motion of acquittal by Nelson-will discuss in morning. Nelson did redactions of #1053. Nelson wants to discuss a few chamber, bench & sidebar conversations. On 3/30/21 in Chambers meeting-re juveniles witness, the State got permission to lead the witness re video of them. On a Sidebar – Williams being a security expert. “That Mr. Floyd was in danger”-State objected to that. Nelson: Having ongoing disclosures issues & wants a chambers conference on that issue. Wants more time to review them. Have received 41 disclosures (with 50,270 pages) to date. Nelson: re impeachment by State of defense witnesses. Wants to know the “specifics”. Frank: may not be an issue, but court ordered as such & can’t disclose as the witnesses have not yet testified. Judge wants State to high light on “what” they will be impeaching witnesses on. They will work together. Now into chambers with Judge & just attorneys re security issues. Trial continues on Wed. 4/14/21 with motions hearing @ 8:45am & jury in about 9:15 to 9:30am.

*Charged (722/20) with 6 counts of aiding & abetting taxes-false or fraudulent returns-filed with commissioner & 3 counts of aiding & abetting taxes-failure to file return, report, document. Omnibus hearing on 6/30/21.

Just an FYI. 555,000 have viewed yesterday's WaPo testimony and 711,000 the day before on YouTube. Would love to see a traffic analysis on that site. (e.g. geographical in the world breakdown) Can such only be viewed by the holder of the site?

Google says this

How do I view statistics for a YouTube video that is not mine?

Ms. S. Hill said something yesterday that Nelson was not happy with.....when asked about his sleeping in the car and different demeanor in the store....but she said clearly that he had told her he was tired because he had been working all night. So his nodding off in the car may well have been pretty normal and not drug induced. That comment was stricken but jury heard it.

Yes! I really found her testimony compelling, actually. I detailed it here:

Let me know what you think or if this brings more to mind for you...

This is the only clip I've found of the "resting comfortably" testimony- I love the incredulity in the prosecutor's face (and in his tone of voice).

Steve Schleicher is a very interesting lawyer..I really like him as a cross examiner. The looks as mentioned above as this witness was saying such bizarre things were priceless...he almost shrugged his shoulders like "I can't argue with this fool" and he would move on. I bet that did not go unnoticed by the jury.

Prior to falling asleep in the car the cup foods video showed him almost dancing in the aisle a sort of shuffle. The owner/manager also expressed concerns to LE that he was not fit to drive..this may have been discounted as it has not been brought up again. JMO

Mr. Brodd’s former PD in California put out a statement saying he hasn’t worked there since 2004 and that his comments do not reflect the values of their PD.
