Ex-Minneapolis Police officer and convicted murderer Derek Chauvin and the three other officers at the scene of George Floyd’s fatal arrest pleaded not guilty to federal civil rights charges on Tuesday.

Chauvin, who appeared virtually from Oak Park Heights correctional facility in Minnesota, also faces another alleged civil rights charge accusing him of restricting the breathing of a juvenile in 2017. That separate case was not the focus of Tuesday’s hearing and arraignment.

MINNEAPOLIS — Four former Minneapolis police officers charged with violating George Floyd's civil rights are scheduled to be arraigned in federal court Tuesday at a hearing that could also address some pretrial motions.

A federal grand jury indicted Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao in May for allegedly depriving Floyd of his rights while acting under government authority on May 25, 2020, as Floyd, 46, was held face-down, handcuffed and not resisting in a restraint that was captured on bystander video. His death led to worldwide protests and calls for change in policing...

The judge didn't make any rulings on the motions Tuesday, but asked all the parties to file briefs outlining their arguments.

Thao, Kueng and Lane still face state criminal charges for aiding and abetting in murder and manslaughter for Floyd’s killing. That trial is scheduled to start in March, although the judge overseeing the case has said it depends on the timing of the federal trial.

Chauvin is also scheduled to appear at a hearing on Thursday in federal court on a separate charge, for an incident during which he allegedly knelt on a 14-year-old boy for 17 minutes.

Charged with violating Floyd's right to be free from unreasonable seizure, unreasonable force by a police officer & for failure to provide Floyd with medical care. Also indicted & charged (5/7/21) in a second indictment (stemming from the arrest & neck restraint of a 14-year-old boy in 2017) with Count 1 without legal justification held the teenager by the throat & struck the teenager multiple times in the head with a flashlight. Alleges that this offense included the use of a dangerous weapon-a flashlight & resulted in bodily injury to teenager. Count 2 charges that Chauvin held his knee on the neck & the upper back of teenager even after the teenager was lying prone, handcuffed & unresisting, also resulting in bodily injury.

8/17/21: In documents obtained by Radar, Anders Folk — Acting United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota — is fighting back against Chauvin, Kueng & Thao's demands. According to the docs, the three ex-cops want the prosecution to "produce a list of all individuals it intends to call as a witness at trial," including the "name & address of each potential witness." Chauvin & Kueng want to be provided the list "one month in advance of trial," while Thao asks the disclosure of witnesses "be made six months before trial." Prosecutors argue that "the government is under no obligation to provide this information to the defense prior to trial." Prosecutors agree "to provide, at least 30 days prior to trial, a potential witness list identifying the witnesses it may call in its case-in-chief & expressly asks that a similar & reciprocal disclosure obligation be ordered for each defendant." Arraignment on 9/14/21.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - The four former Minneapolis police officers accused of violating George Floyd’s civil rights pleaded not guilty to the charges against them in federal court Tuesday.

At an arraignment hearing, Derek Chauvin, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao all entered not guilty pleas to federal charges alleging they deprived Floyd of his rights while acting under government authority. All four defendants waived their rights to hear the charges formally read out to them.

Tuesday’s arraignment hearing took place via teleconference. Chauvin appeared from the state’s maximum security prison, while the other three co-defendants were seen sitting with their lawyers for the virtual hearing.

No trial date has been set.

The judge heard arguments from both parties on several motions, including defense motions asking for Lane, Kueng and Thao's trial be separate from Chauvin’s, who is facing additional federal charges for a 2017 incident involving the neck restraint of a 14-year-old boy.

The judge said joint cases are more the rule in federal court, while severed cases are the exception.

The judge pushed back on some of the defense arguments, saying all the video evidence available will show who did what at the scene of Floyd’s murder. Prosecutors point out the federal case is not a murder case, but a civil rights violation case.

The judge will rule on the motion at a later date.

Chauvin & his ex-wife, Kellie Chauvin are accused of underreporting their income by a total of $464,433 between 2014 & 2019, according to the complaint. That includes an alleged failure to report more than $95K over several years from Mr. Chauvin’s employment as a security guard at a bar. They owe a total of $37,868 in back taxes & penalties, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Washington County attorney’s office. Both Chauvin & his ex-wife each face nine felony charges, which each carry a maximum of five years in prison & a $10K fine.

Derek Chauvin said he intends to appeal on 14 grounds. Among them, he claims Judge Peter Cahill abused his discretion when he denied Chauvin’s request to move the trial out of Hennepin County due to pretrial publicity.

He also claimed the judge abused his discretion when he denied a request to sequester the jury for the duration of the trial, and when he denied requests to postpone the trial or grant a new one

Chauvin proposed 14 issues in his appeal and claimed Judge Peter Cahill abused his discretion when he denied Chauvin’s request to move the trial out of Hennepin County due to pretrial publicity. He also cited issues with how the court handled the motion for a continuance and motions to sequester the jury, along with issues around the trial itself including the addition of the third-degree murder charge and the court's failure to make an official record of the numerous sidebars throughout the trial.

Did he receive sentencing months for that specifically does anyone remember?
