Greene County prosecutor charges father with parental kidnapping in case of missing boys

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Greene County’s prosecutor filed charges against a father accused of disappearing with his two sons.

Darrell Peak faces two counts of parental kidnapping for the disappearance of his sons Mayson Peak, 3, and Kaiden Peak, 4.

Greene County investigators say the search for a father and his two children has become more concerning. The three have now been missing since late Thursday night. They presume Peak has no plan to return to the Springfield area.

Detectives have made several attempts to have an Amber Alert issued, but this case has not met the criteria. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol issued an Endangered Person Advisory in the case as of 4:30 p.m. Friday.

According to the sheriff’s office, the children were last seen around 7 p.m. Thursday in Warsaw, Missouri. However, the missing person incident was reported around 4 p.m. Thursday from a home in the 1200 block East FR 28 in Pleasant Hope. The sheriff’s office says a Benton County Deputy located Darrell Peak’s vehicle north of Warsaw, abandoned along State Highway 65, around 8 p.m. Thursday. Authorities responded to the area after receiving a tip that two small children were walking along State Highway 65. While responding, a deputy observed who she believed to be Darrell and the children walking up the highway. When she turned around to check, no one was walking along the highway. Earlier Thursday evening, a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper stopped to assist Peak on State Highway 65, also north of Warsaw, around 5:30 p.m. According to the trooper, the children were with Peak at the time and appeared to be fine, but their father also declined any assistance.

Family members told authorities Peak’s behavior is out of character, and they have not been able to contact him since he and his two children went missing. Family members have been working around the clock to try and find the three. A few of Peak’s other children quickly began a search in Springfield.

Darrell Peak suffers from depression and has made suicidal statements in the past, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The Greene County Sheriff is seeking any tips, and family are asking everyone to be on the look out. Peak is described as a white man, around 5′6″ tall, 170 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing black carpenter jeans, a gray *advertiser censored* & Go hoody and a black t-shirt. Mayson is described as white boy, 3′ tall, 39 pounds, with light brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt that says “mama knows best”, joggers and tan work style boots. Kaiden is described as a white boy, 3′4″ tall, 38 pounds, with white hair and blue eyes. Kaiden was last seen wearing black shirt with blue sleeves, jeans and boots.

If you have any information regarding Darrell Peak or the missing children, contact 911, your nearest local law enforcement agency or call the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 417-829-6235.

Does anyone else find it strange that they’re charging him but they haven’t found him yet?

I personally find it odd that they're charging him with parental kidnapping. The family appears to be intact with no custody issues. However, I know zilch about MO law. Maybe they have reason to believe the boys are in danger. JMOO

This was my first thoughts too, that the marriage is “intact”, and that he’s been charged while he and the boys are still missing. Maybe the charges stem from the fact that he’s been depressed, etc.? I also wonder why LE presumes he has no intention of returning? That’s very ominous, linked with the depression angle... Plus the vehicle was abandoned, unknown if it broke down, ran out of gas, etc. I would think if the father has no intention of returning, and plans to stay alive and keep the children alive, a vehicle would be useful...so horrific.

I guess we can dismiss the mother’s statement he didn’t know the children in the car when he took off. I’m too lazy to find that link so MOO

Here we go. Looks like he was intent on taking the kids and leaving.

Court docs: Man, sons missing from Greene County spotted in Oklahoma

A Pleasant Hope man and his two young sons, who have been missing since Thursday, were spotted over the weekend in Miami, Oklahoma.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office received a tip Saturday that Darrell Peak, 40, had pulled $600 from his debit card at a casino there and told an employee "he and his kids were going to be getting a fresh start," according to court documents.

On Sunday, prosecutors charged Peak with two counts of kidnapping amid a days-long hunt for he and his sons Mayson, 3, and Kaiden, 4, who were previously seen in Warsaw.

Court documents say deputies first responded to a home in Pleasant Hope on Friday to a woman who said she and her husband, Peak, had been arguing about marital issues.

Peak's daughter described him making a motion with his hand "as having an imaginary gun ... and shooting himself in the head."

Hours later, Peak left the home with a gun he usually carries in a holster and wrecked his car just down the road from the house.

His wife went to meet him, and while she was out of her car, he got in and left with the two boys, saying he would return home. He never did, according to court documents.

That vehicle later ran out of gas near Warsaw, and a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper tried to help, but Peak refused it.

The patrol also received a call about a man walking with his two kids along Highway 65, but they weren't able to find them again.

Peak's wife told investigators he has a history of depression and has made suicidal statements in the past, according to court documents.

Since he was reported missing, Peak had turned off his cell phone and has not made any attempts to contact anyone. The last time he was seen was in Oklahoma, a probable cause statement says.

On Sunday, the local sheriff's department called the case "more concerning" than the family originally thought and are asking for help in finding them.

Darrell Peak is described as a white man who is 5-foot-6, 170 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing black jeans and a gray *advertiser censored* & Go hoodie with a black shirt underneath.

Mayson Peak is described as a 3-foot-tall white boy who weighs 39 pounds with light brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt that reads "Mama knows best" with jogger pants and tan boots.

Kaiden Peak is described as a white boy who is 3-foot-4 and weighs 38 pounds with white hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black shirt with blue sleeves, jeans and boots.

So he clearly is flying by the seat of his pants IMO because Warsaw is a straight shot north of Springfield. Then he doubled back and went to Miami OK? How did he get there if he didn’t have a car?

Tiffany Jackson went missing from Ozark, MO on the same day as Darrell. It's been reported that she was last seen with an unidentified man (no mention of two toddlers). I can't help but wonder whether that man is Darrell. Ozark, MO and Miami, OK are about 2 hrs. apart. I'm just wondering...wondering away.

Interesting. I didn’t know about this one. I am very familiar with Ozark. It’s very close to Springfield which is where Darrell was/is living.
