Pretty much exactly what the Judge said.....then he had to quit the case because the defense raised a fuss. Such is our "justice" system.

We simply can't have our justice system littered with judges who show a clear prejudice toward maintaining impartiality in cases like this involving law enforcement officers.

Judges who state the obvious need to recuse themselves so other judges less biased toward the truth can bring these trials to their proper foregone conclusion.

Makes perfect sense. In a nonsensical manner.

In a very broad sense, as a general rule, I "believe in" our justice system.
But, man, it is faaaaaaaaaaar from perfect.

I wish we'd work on fixing the systemic flaws.
I hate backroom brokering b/t lawyers and plea deals being the rule vs. the exception.

St. Louis police officer accused of killing colleague appears in court as victim's mother looks on (with clip)

March 04, 2019

"ST. LOUIS • A bond hearing for a St. Louis police officer accused of killing a fellow officer in a Russian roulette-like shooting was continued Monday until April.

Nathaniel Hendren, 29, will remain on house arrest at an undisclosed location until then.

He appeared before St. Louis Circuit Judge Thomas McCarthy Monday morning at the Carnahan Courthouse wearing a navy blue suit alongside his attorney, Talmage Newton IV.

Hendren was charged in January with involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action after police say he fatally shot off-duty officer Katlyn Alix during the early morning hours of Jan. 24.

Prosecutors told the judge Monday that they want to secure a superseding indictment from a grand jury, which has not yet happened, and asked that the hearing be continued until April 29....

Alix’s mother, Aimee Lyn Wahlers, attended the hearing along with several other family members and friends. She followed Hendren out of the courtroom as he was escorted by about a dozen sheriff’s deputies.

She stared at him as he got into a waiting black SUV outside the courthouse and stood silently about 10 feet away, surrounded by her friends and family, until it drove away . She left without speaking to reporters.

Alix’s husband, St. Louis police Officer Anthony Meyer, did not attend the hearing Monday.

Hendren posted 10 percent of a $100,000 bail, and has been on house arrest with GPS monitoring at an undisclosed location. He also was required to surrender all of his firearms and his passport."

Nada from the hubby. What do you make of THAT? I imagine that "very angry" doesn't even begin to encompass what this mother feels...
Not sure what to make of it. If its true that she was considering moving in with Hendren, obviously things weren't going great. But who knows if that is actually true. I am certain that he feels horribly betrayed by lots of people.

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I'm shocked that he's being charged with involuntary manslaughter. Do they have proof they were playing Russian roulette and she was a willing participant? Was she suicidal? Is there proof that she had a death wish? If he gets off just with involuntary manslaughter, anyone who shoots someone dead in a private setting can claim they were playing Russian roulette. This is preposterous! Why are people taking this guy's word for it?

He’s a police officer. The only reason we’re really hearing anything at all is because she was also a police officer. I do think the fact that she’s a woman also is in his favor. But the fact that he’s an officer will absolutely work to his benefit ultimately IMO.

Wow. I was hoping someone would correct me and say there is indeed overwhelming evidence of Russian roulette, but evidently that isn't the case! It's outrageous that police officers are held to a different standard than other criminals! Who gets to decide which professions are more "believable" and less culpable? The injustice is astounding.

I believe they are taking is word because there was a witness. While his LE partner did not witness the gunfire, he was present for the "game" leading up to the fatal shot.
Still so much that needs to be released here to truly know what happened here. MOO

Have there been any comments from Katlyn's husband? I haven't heard anything. Katlyn's mother is obviously very very angry at Hendren. Understandable.

I'm thinking the silence from husband and mother speak volumes on the allegations of a relationship between shooter and victim. Adds yet another layer to this disturbing event and tragic loss of life. This was completely avoidable.

Well, of course, they have proof!

Sworn officers of the law both stating something as fact, makes it an indisputable fact.
They have the word of both NH and his non-witness, beer-sipping partner...what more could the public want? It's just unfortunate that the third officer who was present at the time can't also confirm this version of events.

She got shot dead w/ a bullet to her chest, though, so there's that.

The Blue Wall is real, and impenetrable.

"Nothing to see here, folks! Move along...."

JMO.

It's her husband I really feel for most in this whole tragic situation.
He was placed in a really untenable position.
His will almost certainly be what we call a "complicated bereavement."
There must be a lot of conflicting emotions for him to to unpack, sort through, and attempt to resolve.
That this has been such a public event will almost certainly further complicate his ability to sort through his feelings about this entire sordid mess.
Her husband's silence is perfectly understandable.
I think he's being as respectful as he can be to his dead wife's memory but saying nothing with regard to the circumstances of her death.
I admire the man his ability to stay dignified throughout this circus.

A lot of people would have already turned in their badge.
If he hasn't, that says a lot about him and his strength of character.
I hope he has a fantastic support system, and is able to move on with his life and his career happily and successfully.

He might be ordered to stay away as a witness..and maybe not as a court order but a suggested "it might be best" type of one?

Hey everyone....a spinoff of this is apparently taking off overseas!

Policewoman shot dead playing 'fastest to draw' in Paris | Daily Mail Online
Oh my gosh, this is what I was afraid of! Precedent's been set. To make matters worse, a senior police official wrote the killing off as a "stupid drama" (in article cited above). I would be livid if my daughter were killed like that and the police just referred to it as "stupid drama." Sounds a lot like victim blaming to me, and again, there's apparently no proof they were playing that game beyond the words of the killer. WOW!

In a day and age of DNA evidence, people are figuring out ways around that: Don't hide the fact that you killed the person at all! Come "clean," immediately call 911, and just explain it was a game, the gun misfired, it was accidental, and of course the victim was a willing participant. Easy peasy.
