Massive search planned for Missouri man missing since Mother’s Day

Feb 15
Family, friends and volunteers from the community are gathering this weekend for a massive search with the hope of finding Patrick Chapman, a 34-year-old Missouri father who’s been missing since Mother’s Day.

Jen, who lives in their hometown of St. Charles, Missouri, is Patrick’s ex-wife and the mother of their 11-year-old son. The two have remained friends long after their six-year marriage ended in 2011.

The last time Jen saw or even spoke to Patrick was on May 10, 2020 - Mother’s Day.

The next search for Patrick is scheduled for February 20 and 21, 2021 in Mill Spring, Missouri. More information can be found here.

Massive search planned for Missouri man missing since Mother’s Day

To Note:

•last time Jen (ex) saw or even spoke to Patrick.
•he came over to use son’s laptop
•10pm, he arrived at a family friend’s house to stay 3hrs away in Mill Spring, Missouri
May 11
•Patrick and his car was missing by morning
May 30
•family reported him missing
June ?
•vehicle found with major damage less than 2 miles away from place last seen, in Mark Twain National Forest
•his wallet, containing his ID and bank card, medicine, were found inside the car. However, his cell phone and car keys were nowhere to be found.

On Mother's Day last year, Patrick Chapman texted his ex-wife, with whom he'd stayed friendly after their 2011 divorce, to ask to use their 11-year-old son's Chromebook. He later went over to her house with the same question, saying he needed it to check and see who had taken money out of his account.

But his ex, Jen Newbury, misunderstood. "I thought maybe he was accusing our son of taking money out of his account from the laptop—but I overreacted," she tells NBC News. "He looked upset and confused. But I told him to leave. It’s the last time I ever saw him." He went to a family friend's home three hours away, but by early the next morning he and his vehicle were gone, and he hasn't been seen since. His family is hoping that by telling the story to a wider audience, more information about the 34-year-old will come in.

At first, no one was overly alarmed, as Chapman was known to couch-surf or take off camping. But by the end of May, it became clear something was wrong. In mid-June, his vehicle was found abandoned on a 4-wheeler path in Mark Twain National Forest, less than two miles from where he was last seen. Its bumper was severely damaged and all four tires were flat, and Chapman's wallet and medicine were still inside, but his cell phone and keys were missing. Authorities say there's no cell reception in the area where the car was found. Multiple searches have been carried out, but the rural terrain is rough, and people need special hiking and snow gear to look. The next search is scheduled for this weekend, if the weather cooperates. "Every time I look at [their son], every time I see his face, it kills me," Newbury says. "He needs his father. And we need answers."
Family: 'We Need Answers' to Dad Missing Since Mother's Day

I live in Wayne County. Anyone have any ideas on how I could be any help?

Hi, @Cmd89vision, and welcome to WS! Kudos to you for offering your help!! Patrick's family and friends likely would appreciate more boots on the ground for their upcoming search this weekend, if you're able and willing. Also, they're in dire need of search equipment and/or donations of food, water, supplies, etc. for searchers. Even if all you do is spread the word to others who could help them, I'm sure they'd be grateful. More information can be found upthread and at the FB group.

I commend your offer to help Patrick's family!! Be safe out there.

“Every time I look at him [Jackson], every time I see his face, it kills me,” Jen. “He needs his father. And we need answers.”

The last time Jen saw or even spoke to Patrick was on May 10, 2020 - Mother’s Day.

“He texted me Happy Mother’s Day,” Jen recalled. “Then he proceeded to ask me about Jackson’s Chromebook.”

Jen explained that Patrick was telling her that someone had taken money out of his account and that he wasn’t able to access it on his phone, so he needed his son’s laptop. Later that morning, he went over to Jen’s house and asked again for the laptop.

“I thought maybe he was accusing our son of taking money out of his account from the laptop - but I overreacted,” Jen said. “He looked upset and confused. But I told him to leave. It’s the last time I ever saw him.”

Jen told Dateline that Patrick texted a family friend and asked to come stay with them, about three hours away near Mill Spring, Missouri. He had briefly dated their daughter, and would sometimes stay at their home from time to time if needed.

I'm really only thinking suicide in the woods.

There seems to be nothing else to go on, no evidence pointing to anything nefarious.

His ex was nasty to him, wouldn't let him use his son's computer, he had to stay with family friends 3 hours away and was known to couch surf.

Did he have a job? I didn't see any mention of that. His car was 25 years old, so maybe he didn't have a job or much money?

I think he felt down on his luck, was a bit of an itinerant guy anyway. bumming around etc. then getting accused of stealing his son's money really hurt him.

I had this exact same view except then I read the latest update on the Go Fund Me and it made me think totally different, if it is true.

He was a tow truck driver and I don’t think it’s suicide. He had a great relationship with Jen. It was a misunderstanding but not one that would warrant suicide. This girl he was tied up with needs to be looked into further.

It’s been a while and sadly still no news. I’m actually a kayaker and have underwater camera equipment. Nothing fancy but good enough to see what’s down there. Anyone know what particular bodies of water they are focused on? Black river maybe? It runs through the area. I have his poster up in my studio and it never fails people don’t know who he is. I’m only about thirty mins away from Mill Springs. There’s this one body of water in the area I’m curious about. It’s a spring, It’s super narrow hard to get into, turns into a cave supposed to be super deep. Only locals know about it. I’ve heard stories of people “vanishing” there. I believe you can get a kayak in during low water, not sure how far in. Lowering a camera in might not be a bad idea however.

Hi again, @Cmd89vision! The link below will take you to a FB page created by Patrick's loved ones. They have multiple posts and messages discussing the search efforts they have conducted. More than likely, if you send them a message or make a post, they'll be able to give you specifics about which areas and/or bodies of water they need searched.

I know they were wanting to search the Black River, and Brushy Creek. Jen and some others did a search walking the banks along Brushy Creek this summer. They had no luck finding anything. Is the Spring you are talking about called Markham Springs by chance? The family would be forever grateful for any help, especially anyone that could do a search of the water with equipment.

Eight years of Dateline's Missing in America: 169 still missing

patrick_chapman_cropped.png

Missouri father Patrick Chapman has been missing since Mother’s Day, 2020, when he disappeared from Mill Spring. Patrick, 34, arrived at a family friend’s house around 10 p.m. on the evening of May 10. By the next morning, Patrick, and the 1995 burgundy Escort Station Wagon he had been driving, were both gone. On June 5, his 1995 Burgundy Escort Station Wagon was found about two miles away on a 4-wheeler path in Wayne County. The car had bumper damage and flat tires. Patrick’s wallet, containing his ID and bank card, was found inside the car, but his cell phone and car keys have not been located. His ex-wife, Jen, told Dateline that Patrick, who worked as a tow-truck driver, was known to couch surf or go camping, so it was believed he had just moved on to a different location. But when no one had heard from him over the next couple of weeks, a family friend reported him missing to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office on May 30. Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. J.T. Wilson, who has been assisting the sheriff’s office since mid-June 2020, says the case remains a missing persons case and there have been no recent updates. Family and friends are offering a $3,000 reward for information leading them to Patrick’s whereabouts. A billboard with Patrick’s photo and information went up in March 2021 on the side of Highway 55. A Facebook Page “Help Us Find Patrick Chapman” and the Facebook group “Bring Patrick Chapman Home” have been created to discuss Patrick’s case, provide information for upcoming searches and bring in tips. Patrick is described as being 5’6” tall and weighing 160 lbs. He has brown hair and hazel eyes. His tattoos include the word “Chapman” vertically down his right forearm, a circular saw blade or sun image between his shoulder blades and a cross on shoulder blade. Anyone with information on Patrick’s whereabouts is asked to call the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office at (573) 224-3219.

Family says the car was wiped down and all cash taken. Did LE ever confirm this? Does anyone have a picture of the car's "heavy damage"? I scoured the family page but couldn't find one.
