Ever since reading the CNN article on DA Champion's approach to the Johnny Lee Butts murder, I have felt that Champion was out-of-his-league when it comes to investigation. Prosecution is another matter, I suppose, because he did obtain a a plea bargained conviction.

Now that he is basically stepping aside -- and even suggesting that Internet sleuths may soon see unseen evidence -- I believe that it is time for his constituents to take notice of his term of office.

In the ensuing weeks, DA Champion might find the handling of the investigation into the murder of Odin Lloyd [ie The Aaron Hernandez Murder Trial] a good example of securing and investigating a crime scene by competent professionals, and then protecting a chain of evidence which eventually leads to a decent prosecution.

Isn't he technically not part of the actual investigation? Because BC worked for the Sheriff's dept, the MS State Patrol was leading the investigation? I think all Darby and Champion are taking the lead on is the dissemination of public information.

Wishing this had been solved by now. Still wondering about that outside ideal of a random killer even though it makes little sense, but LE says they are not close to solving this. If I take them at their word from earlier today then I have to wonder what is holding them back. Still thinking it's possible Jessica tried to say "wreck". Conspiracy theories make logical sense on some levels, but why no DNA matches with the group that had surrounded her in her past having come in and out of custody seemingly endless times. So maybe the fire destroyed any/all DNA that would've been left anywhere. Hmmmm. Champion says the scene was secured and was processed thru the night and continued in the morning, so I have to think pictures of the car were taken before it was towed away.
LE says they know what happened to JC that night and that they have other video besides from M&M. Where besides a carwash or a store would it have come from? Still can't get rid of the nagging feeling that JC wanted something besides Sonic again. And surely she had time and possibly enough gas to get to parts of Memphis if the new timeline based upon her mom's interview is correct. She had a plan I think. Was she going to pick someone up at an airport? Or say at a casino in Tunica? Anyone's guess is as good as mine. Still we are missing the point somehow IMO. Thinking back since the start I've considered every theory, but jealousy/rage don't fit for me. Crime involving unplanned opportunity is just as likely to my strange way of thinking.
If it was someone closely related to her in any way (family, friend, enemy, etc) I have enough faith in LE and the alphabet teams to have figured that out. Shady characters often just muddy the water more. Highway 51 is also a corridor of crime.
So that's where I'm at with this case right now. Keep digging everyone, but if we are dealing with a phantom of sorts it's likely only FBI specialized units will ever connect this with other cases. :moo:

Dear Jessica, hello pretty Lady!

I call you "Lady", as today is your special day! The day you would have moved from the "anguished" teen-age years to young womanhood. I am a Groundhog Baby, too! I am sure I will never forget you on our special day.

Though I am twice your age, it is truly remarkable how much you and I have in common. I have heard that you had a story to tell! Hey, me, too! I was also born and raised in the Deep South... even deeper than you! I too was really a good girl but I did make unwise, immature, foolish choices at times. Not saying you did that, as I really don't know. I do know that you made choices that had to have caused discomfort for others. You just can't be a square peg in a small town where the pretty, outgoing, blond girls can only be round. Personally, I myself made choices that caused consequences that I live with even today. I too was involved in inter-racial dating at a young age. And, though I don't know what that meant for you, I do know what it meant for me... it meant my loving parents were "beyond themselves" and didn't know what to do about this "problem" I created for them. It meant I had to be down right sneaky at times! Can't tell you how many times I made a "quick trip to town", with my parents' approval, though often a skeptical approval, IYKWIM, by way of the back roads that eventually got me to town... but not before clandestine meetings; the quick, passionate kind that kept the "love" alive while keeping my parents in the dark, as much as possible!

Anyways, I could go on and on about this... how these zippy little meet-ups very often put me in scary, and more than once, in downright dangerous situations. The worse was the time when I went looking for my sweetheart and ended up being all alone, in a very dark place, a remote spot somewhere in a field... somewhere. But, not completely alone. No, my spur of the moment decision to go looking for my love (who was nowhere to be found), resulted in his good friend (wink, wink) offering to take me to where he was hanging out. But, we didn't end up there... we ended up in the middle of nowhere, in the dark. Anything could have happened. I am lucky to be alive.

I've read that you are a Christian. I am a Christian, too. I watched your funeral and I felt the stirring of the Spirit within me. You know, when we don't know what to pray, when we can only groan because we have no words, He makes intercession for us! I felt that was happening during your funeral. I loved the traditional service, the music, the "preaching"! It was lovely. As you were lovely.

Well, I shouldn't spoil this HAPPY BIRTHDAY/HAPPY GROUNDHOG'S DAY JESSICA letter with my sordid tales. I just wanted you to know I think you and I could have, would have, should have been good friends. I have come to think of you as that, in spite of the little that I actually know about you. I think I know the important stuff.

Happy Birthday, Jessica. I pray and hope and pray more everyday that Justice will come. You deserve it!

:Happybirthday: :balloons: :confetti:

While it seems that the article has since been updated and that portion has been removed, I am certain that in an earlier version of the latest news posted here, DA Champion stated that if there is not a break in the case soon, he may release the details that they have to the public. I would assume that he would not release any info that would jeopardize the ongoing investigation, so my question is why has that information not been released already??

Maybe JC got in trouble with the law and was forced to become a confidential informant. But she let her neighbor/friend know who then told the gang. This could be why LE was moving so slow.

Forgive me for snipping your message; I wanted to reply to this specific part. You make several points here.

One, where else was Jess seen on video?
Two, did Jess travel as far as Memphis? Or even a casino in Tunica?
Three, did Jess pick someone up from the airport?

I for one would also like to know what is on the video. It could possibly shed some light on what happened that night. But to travel as far as Memphis or even Tunica would really cut things close when it comes to the timeframe, especially if picking someone up at the airport. Jess left M&Ms around 6:30. There are other places she could more easily have gone.

One way or the other it would help to know if she left Courtland and just what was she engaged in.

Maybe if LE does release much of the info that they have many of our questions will be answered and we will see things much clearer. We can hope.
:moo:

Could it be that we are being told LE is "clueless" to throw the suspects off and hope talk will start up in town?

What happened to the Grand Jury that was being discussed last week?

Something is terribly wrong if all these top notch investigators can not solve this case! In this amount of time investigating, it would seem they would have come across some of the conspiracy/corruption that is suspected in this area. However, nothing has made the news or been reported here. Just another factor that raises questions in my mind.

My opinions only!

I wonder who in Courtland is not scared? LE could have talked to the whole town by now.

Zool, did I miss an article implying that Chambers is stepping aside? All I read was that the case is basically cold and they might release more info. (<modsnip>; I'm just asking if I missed something or if you are just extrapolating/opining.) TIA

Finding Jessica Chambers' Killer Turns Cold

[...]

District Attorney John Champion confirmed that there are no new leads to speak of in this case.

Four different law enforcement agencies are working this case. Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby, his staff, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, U.S. Marshals, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have teams of investigators working nonstop on the case.

[...]

Both DA Champion and Sheriff Darby have been targets of critics who say they've mishandled the investigation. But both say all that can be done is being done until Jessica's murderer is found. "It'll take time," Sheriff Darby said. "We'll get there. It's just going to take a while. You remember the Holly Bobo case? It's something that nobody likes waiting on."

[...]

Meanwhile, the reward for information leading to an arrest in the Jessica Chambers murder case has risen to $53,000. If you have any information call 1-800-729-2169.

I'm on Taptalk and don't know how to bold text unfortunately.

Your mention of the Grand Jury and all the alphabet groups, as Zool would say, made me wonder (with wishful thinking) if LE is talking about releasing details to scare the perps into coming forward? This info would give the locals more details that could lead them to their own conclusions...and possibly take action upon themselves (hopefully not!). I would be much more afraid of retaliatory behavior from loved ones than keeping away from police custody if I were the perp in this situation.

I agree and hopefully LE will release more info so that residents of Courtland might remember things more clearly.

If I'm not mistaken you are both referring to DA Champion.

Both Champion and Sheriff (don't mess with my county) Darby have made it clear, since Anonymous took up the case mid December, that outside influences were making it difficult for them. If they are changing horses midstream you have to wonder what brought about the change of heart.

My opinion only but it wouldn't surprise me if they are talking of releasing info because the info is about to be seen by the Grand Jury and they don't want it leaked on the Internet so it's best LE controls it and can monitor the reaction.

I think the only retaliatory behavior on the part of loved ones is one of supporting law enforcement in making an arrest. Jessica's parents have been very vocal in their support of law enforcement.

“I’m just numb right now,” Ben Chambers said. “I just don’t even know how what to think. I just keep wondering every time I look at someone: ‘Did you do it?’"

Ben Chambers <snip> said that he was left out of the loop in the investigation, although he understands why. "I can't even go up front in the offices because they've got all the ATF and FBI and everything up front and they don't want me to see the evidence up there.

<snip> they're looking out for my benefit. They don't want me to see things that bring back memories, or see something that maybe I'll think someone had something to do with it and I'll go do something to some innocent person. <snip> Ben Chambers said.

Idle threats or a reason to keep word about a suspect(s) quiet? A grand jury without a suspect? If this is how they are announcing a grand jury, it's very unusual.

I'd have done anything for her."

Suspects often aren't named in criminal investigations. You expect a public announcement of a grand jury?

I am not expecting an announcement of a grand jury or of the suspect. A suspect usually isn't named publicly until charges are filed or a grand jury recommends an indictment. At least that's been my understanding. However, suspects can be called before the grand jury and asked to testify.

That's all for me tonight. Goodnight then.

I merely responded to your #497 post about announcing a grand jury. I don't believe grand juries are announced.
