Details of Disappearance
Johnson was last seen in Livingston, Montana on May 22, 1986. She left her apartment, telling her roommate she'd return in a couple of hours. She was sighted with a former boyfriend that evening; he stated they drove around for awhile and then he dropped her off downtown.

Johnson may have been seen at a bar in Gardiner, Montana, fifty miles south of Livingston, six days after her disappearance, but this hasn't been confirmed. She never returned home and has never been heard from again.

She left behind all her belongings, including an uncashed check, and she also left a baby daughter. Investigators believe she was murdered, but her case remains unsolved.

There is very limited information regarding her case. Foul play is suspected. Several other murders were committed in Livingston around the time of Amy's disappearance and police are investigating if the crimes are connected.

Amy Johnson was just 24 years old when she disappeared on May 16, 1986. She told her roommate she’d be back in a couple of hours, but that didn’t happen. There was an unconfirmed sighting of her in a Gardiner bar six days later, but that’s it.

No sign of her has been reported since then. “It’s being investigated as a homicide,” Raney said.

There is a suspect, he said, but there isn’t much evidence.

“We’ve been all over the place, digging and probing and searching around, but nothing has come up yet,” Raney said.

Johnson had lived what Jenkins called a “counterculture” life. “She kind of ran with a rough crowd.”

After almost 20 years, police are still hoping for a break in the case, which, like the other two, remains open.

09/11/94 - The Billings Gazette

On the evening of 05/16/86, Amy told her roommate she would be back in 2 hours. Johnson did not return leaving behind a baby girl and her belongings. Authorities suspect that she was murdered. Amy was last seen with a former boyfriend on the evening of her disappearance. When questioned the ex-beau said he dropped her off downtown that night after they had driven around for awhile. A report came in that she was seen 6 days later at a bar in Gardiner 50 miles south, however LE was not able to confirm the sighting. LE received several tips over the years that Amy was killed and body buried.
