Muhammad Ali dead at 74

When I was a kid my dad told me Ali could brag as much as he wanted because he could back it up. He really was The Greatest.

Seventy-four years old and he had a full, rich, and amazing life. It doesn't sound so awful but I don't want it to be true.

RIP.

I follow him on twitter. This was his last tweet.

Seems right.

My best memory of Mr. Ali was seeing him light the torch at the opening of the 1996 Olympic Game in Atlanta. The Greatest indeed.

"I hated every minute of the training, but I told myself, “don’t quit. Suffer now, and live the rest of your life as a champion."

Many many quotes. Amazing.

My favorite is when he went to a restaurant wearing his Olympic medal. The waitress told him they don't serve Negroes. He said ti was OK as he did not eat them. I saw a meme of that but cannot find it

He related that story during this (early 70s?) interview:

RIP The Greatest. What a man.

This year is so horrible.

I thought I would post this picture.

My heart was just getting a little less heavy after Prince - not now.

Laila Ali posted this on Facebook.

"I love this photo of my father and my daughter Sydney when she was a baby!"

Muhammad Ali Died of Septic Shock, Will Be Honored at Public Funeral: Spokesman

by Jon Schuppe

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali died of septic shock after spending five days at an Arizona hospital for what started out as respiratory problems and gradually worsened, succumbing only after his wife and children arrived at his bedside to say goodbye, a family spokesman said Saturday.

"It was a solemn moment," Bob Gunnell told reporters in Phoenix.

The details came as Ali's family revealed plans for a Friday funeral in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, a daylong affair that will include a procession through the streets where the 74-year-old world champion grew up and learned to box. His body is expected to be returned to the city within two days...

I remember my favorite act of Mr. Ali, his lighting of the Olympic torch. He brought more awareness to Parkinson's disease. I loved the story told above about his statement in the restaurant regarding serving negroes. I cried when he showed such courage climbing the steps to light the torch. The class & dignity he showed is a lesson for all . My deepest condolences to his family & all who loved him.

People of the world, famous and common, pay tribute to Muhammad Ali

“Muhammad Ali shook up the world. And the world is better for it. We are all better for it,” President Obama said in a lengthy statement. “Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family, and we pray that the greatest fighter of them all finally rests in peace.”

Paul McCartney, one of few humans whose worldwide popularity could match Ali’s, wrote in a statement posted on his website, “I loved that man. . . . Besides being the greatest boxer, he was a beautiful, gentle man with a great sense of humour.”
