Judge sentences 2nd parent in college admissions scandal: What does it mean for Lori Loughlin?
The longer sentence for Sloane does not bode well for actress Lori Loughlin, a former federal prosecutor told Miguel Almaguer on TODAY Wednesday.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges in April. Legal experts say both could face years of prison time if convicted.
"If Felicity Huffman did not get probation, none of them will,'' former federal prosecutor Francey Hakes said on TODAY. "Each sentence I think will get longer."

Does anyone know why Huffman and Sloan don’t report to prison for two or three months after their sentence? Is that common, and I wonder what the reason is. TIA
It is pretty common. The prison system has all sorts of reports that are done beforehand to make sure the inmate is placed in the appropriate unit/prison. These are white collar crimes so there is normally not any danger to the public. Also, they allow the defendant to figure out what to do with their homes, families, work before going off to do their time.

Breaking: CA businessman Steve Semprevivo arrives at federal court in S Boston to learn his sentence in the college admissions scandal. He admits paying a $400K bribe to get his son into Georgetown University in 2016.

Scheme mastermind Rick Singer set up a phony athletic profile for Semprevivo's son, touting him as a stud tennis player/athletic recruit. Feds say cash was funneled through a phony charity to Gordon Ernst, the tennis coach at Georgetown. He's awaiting trial on racketeering charge

The feds suggest Semprevivo do 13 months in prison and pay a $95,000 fine. Judge Indira Talwani has generally been giving less time, but a greater fine than recommended by the US Attorney. Felicity Huffman got 2 weeks, Devin Sloane 4 months.

Semprevivo seems at ease sitting at the witness table. He just turned to look at those of us sitting in the press area of courtroom 9. He has several lawyers including Steve Boozang, who represented mobster Francis "Cadillac Frank" Salemme.

Semprevivo's son Adam (just a recreational tennis player) was kicked out of Georgetown. He sued the school saying he was wrongfully disciplined. Even though the family dropped the suit in July, that will no doubt come up at sentencing today when prosecutors argue for 13 months.

Semprevivo, who has an MBA from Harvard, also enlisted the help of his son in this scheme. Prosecutors note an email his son sent the tennis coach, fraudulently claiming he was a competitive tennis player.

When Semprevivo pled guilty in May, the US attorney agreed to ask for an 18 month sentence. They have since dropped the request to 13 months.

Judge Talwani is miffed with the government - because of a relatively late filing from Georgetown Univ on their losses due to this scandal. The victim impact statement has not been reviewed by the Judge. She thinks this should have been filed sooner.

Judge: I have to set a fine, without knowing the full amount of restitution that will be owed to victims. She feels that puts her in a difficult position.

A former FBI agent is now speaking to the Judge. He says SS is a good husband, a good friend, a good father, and a law abiding member of the community. He stated "this is on me...I do believe he has totally accepted his guilt."

That is, in speaking to Semprevivo, the defendant told the former FBI man "this is on me" - taking responsibility. The former agent says he's dealt with many criminals and has not seen others accept responsibility in this way.

Judge stops him..."putting race aside" she says he was taking someone else's spot at Georgetown. He says Georgetown was not a victim of Semp. in his view...he says other students who didn't get to go are his victims.

Kenner: "the essence of the crime here...is the corruption of the college admissions process." He adds his client was part of that corruption. "That's clear - we own that, mr Semprevivo owns that, and we can look back to the timing of the plea in this case."

Judge Talwani: she has considered defendant's criminal history, the nature of the offense, etc. She must also consider deterrence and ways to protect the public.

@JHall7news
1m
Nature of the offense: the recruitment scheme's purpose was to gain a specific spot in the university, not change test scores. "they're both fraud...both violate the same statute.." But she does see it more serious buying a specific spot. There's a different order of magnitude.

@JHall7news

Talwani- the difference paying 250k vs 400k doesn't really impact her. the coaches charged different amounts. She sees the culpability as the same. "The defendant did involve his son and that is a factor that makes the nature of the crime more serious."

@JHall7news

Talwani says she will give Semprevivo a prison sentence as expected.

She asks the defendant to think about parents with no resources or no education trying to navigate this process. Mr Singer would pitch a side door...the question to ask is "what makes your children entitled to a side door?"

Judge Talwani: sentence is 4 months. Two years supervised release, 500 hours community service.

Talwani: Semprevivo will pay a $100,000 fine. That's the largest so far.

4 months is not nearly enough. I like how the attorney started to talk about Semprevivo not taking away a spot for an African American on the tennis team.....huh? Still don't get it or were they trying to raise a red herring? The lawyer should have to pay a fine for that one....

Semprevivo will have to pay restitution to victims. The defense asks for a self surrender, and wants a low security prison in the central district of California. Judge Talwani will make a recommendation but it's up to the bureau of prisons.

@JHall7news

Semprevivo stands for formal sentencing: he hears the four month sentence again, the same as parent Devin Sloane who pled guilty before him. Felicity Huffman got two weeks. Thurs Nov 7 is when he will report to prison.

@JHall7news

Semprevivo must pay the $100k fine to the government plus restitution..This is a pattern, it now appears parents who pled guilty to the recruitment scheme will do four months. A total of 15 parents pled guilty - 12 others await sentencing. Some, like Lori Laughlin, want a trial.
