April Reid, 38, of Lenoir, has been missing for two years.

Sgt. Stella January, who took over the case in July, said she longs to provide answers to Reid’s family.

38-year-old Lenoir resident April Michelle Reid was last seen in February 2021. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to her location

“There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of April,” January said as she held up a file that’s 6 inches thick. January keeps the file in her desk. She said she looks through it at least once a week.

January said there is little evidence in Reid’s disappearance. “It’s been two years since April went missing,” January said. “Two years of nothing.”

Reid’s information, including dental records, has been entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. A DNA sample from Reid’s sister was also submitted to the database, January said.

Tessa Bowman is Reid’s aunt and the family member who reported Reid missing on May 20, 2021. The last time Reid was seen in the area was when she turned up on video at an ATM in Hickory. That was on Feb. 15, 2021, January said.

Reid was seen withdrawing money from the ATM. She was riding in a car with another person. The person and vehicle were identified, and authorities have determined the person is not linked to Reid’s disappearance, January said.

The family told police the last time they communicated with Reid was around Feb. 28, 2021.

Bowman said Reid has not accessed her bank account since she disappeared. Reid was receiving disability money, Bowman said.

“I hope April is happy and safe somewhere,” January said. “I would just like to be able to find some closure for (Bowman).”

After Reid was reported missing, police got a call from a health care worker who said Reid was a client of theirs and had not been in touch. The health care worker said they went to Reid's apartment and found it in disarray, which was so unusual that she took photos of it.

When Reid's sister went to the apartment, she said it appeared someone had been there and had moved things around. There were no indications of a violent struggle, but Reid had left behind her belongings, including her phone and her favorite jacket. Her cellular phone was no longer in service when police tried to track her through it.

Authorities found evidence that Reid was in touch with a man who had been charged serious felony offenses in the part, including kidnapping and assault with intent to kill. The man admitted he knew Reid and said he'd given her some money to travel. He also told police about arguments Reid had been having with someone else prior to her disappearance.

At the time of her disappearance, Reid lived off disability payments. She has not accessed her bank account since she was last seen, and her food stamp card, which still has money on it, has not been used since the time in Hickory on February 25. Her loved ones stated she had been involved with drugs and alcohol, but was trying to turn her life around.

Investigators believe "criminal activity has contributed" to Reid's disappearance, but they don't necessarily think she's dead and believe she could be in hiding. Her case remains unsolved.

Oh, oops! City of Lenoir Police Department posted the dentals were not a march, and now the post is down. Hopeful they just did a quick edit, and the info will be made available again.
