NC - Shaniya Davis, 5, 11/10/09 TRIAL THREAD

YEA !~
I hate to celebrate the death of someone but the death of a man like this means life and peace for others. I'll leave him for God to sort out ............AFTER his death !

Rest in peace, sweetheart.

She's SO beautiful ! I'm so sorry you met a monster, but you never will again .

I don't follow every case.. but was around as this one unfolded as a missing child report.

Great news about penalty.. and great that it did not take too long in deliberations

This jury meant business from the very start. They were great.

Wow, I didnt watch, havent looked , not even a peak untill right now! I am oddley unaffected, I dont care if he lives forever or dies because I cant decide which is really worse, in the end it wont bring her back or reverse what happened and he wont be around a child, but I do hope it scares the hello out of AD! I just want a good long time on death row maybe 15 years of being isolated 23 hours a day, and that one hour.....well anything can happen to a child killer and rapist :) (ok there was a little smile on that)

Jury sentences Mario McNeill to death for the murder of Shaniya Davis

Mario McNeill was sentenced to death today for the murder of 5-year-old Shaniya Davis in November 2009.

McNeill, 33, declined the opportunity to speak before being sentenced by Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jim Ammons.

Jurors deliberated a little more than a half-hour before reaching a decision.

"I can never get Shaniya back. You've taken that from me,'' said Bradley Lockhart, Shaniya's father. "You were the last thing my daughter got to look at.''

Ammons addressed McNeill before McNeill was escorted from the courtroom.

"You did not have to kill that child,'' Ammons said.

"Take him out of here now,'' Ammons told the bailiffs.

Ammons later apologized to Shaniya's family for not being able to bring them justice. He said the trial was the best that could be done.

I believe MAM wanted the DP too, just because he'd be in solitary from now on, because his torture and probable death in gen-pop would be a million times worse then drifting off to sleep on some good drugs.

The article made me weep. Especially the part about the judge apologizing to Shaniya's family.

It isnt justice. Not even close. My heart also bleeds for MAM's family. When do you ever look at your beautiful baby and anticipate a day like this?

AD, you are next. It is likely the jury will be even angrier with you.

I hope someone teaches him to make something other than cranes. He will saturate the market for his artwork.

I think this is such good news and I am thankful this jury found MAM Guilty and gave him the DP. I know Shaniya's family will forever be heartbroken over losing sweet Shaniya at least MAM will not be able to hurt another child or anyone for that matter.

God Bless Shaniya, I know she touched my heart when I first seen her beautiful sweet happy face.

Mitigating factors, which McNeill had allowed his lawyers to compile but not present, included his use of drugs and alcohol at the time of Shaniya's kidnapping and death, the fact that he voluntarily went to the police to be interviewed after Shaniya was reported missing, and his relationship with his own children.

Apparently those were to have been the mitigators that were not presented after all.
