According to search warrants executed Thursday and filed with the Clerk of Court's Office this morning, Shelby Anne Wilkie had told friends she was planning to leave her husband on Jan. 4 and had hired a divorce lawyer.

Michael Wilkie requested emergency vacation time from his employer, Wilsonart International in Fletcher, on Dec. 30, and he asked to be off until Jan. 11, the documents state.

Wilkie told investigators that scratches on his face, visible in a taped interview with WLOS-TV, were inflicted by his wife during a fight.

Friends and family told deputies that Shelby did not suffer from postpartum depression and would never have left without her baby

After the search was executed, numerous items were taken from the Wilkie's Moody Street home, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

The evidence included a Ford vehicle key inside a Tupperware container in the master bathroom closet, two computers, a stun gun, two cell phones, numerous swabbings that included red stains found throughout the home and some charred items from a burn pit in the backyard.

Jury selection began Tuesday in the trial of a Hendersonville man charged in the grisly murder of his wife. Michael Wilkie, 41, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Shelby Sprowls Wilkie, who was reported missing by her husband on Jan. 2, 2012.

Michael Wilkie was charged with murder three days later, on Jan. 5, after his wife’s remains were found in a burn barrel at the home of his parents on Kanuga Lake Road, where he was staying, according to warrants...

The couple had a 3-month-old daughter when Shelby Wilkie died at age 38.

The fate of Michael Wilkie, accused of killing his wife and burning her remains, now rests with the jury.

Seventeen witnesses testified in the three-day trial that took three years to bring before a jury. The state introduced 185 pieces of evidence, including a charred bracelet once worn by the victim, Shelby Wilkie, a taped interview of Michael Wilkie who pleaded for his wife's return two days after police say he burned her remains, and hundreds of photographs...

Newman held up the photos to show the jury one more time. “How do you have a pretty lady, a healthy lady, go from this to this?” he asked, putting down the photo of a smiling Shelby and picking up the charred bracelet – nearly all that remained of her in the ashes.

Just saw this case on 20/20 last night. Sad that she didn't leave him sooner. Appears he threw her up against the wall. Only took the jury 30 to convict him. Didn't buy that she "wanted to be cremated". Thank goodness he was stupid enough to leave her bracelet on her and that they were able to identify it.

I am pleasantly surprised to see that he has confessed. It seems that most of them hire a lawyer and stick with their chosen story, even when they know that everybody knows that they are lying!

Maybe this one is not a sociopath. That would help to explain why he was so bad at lying convincingly in the interview. This one might have a concience. MOO
Nope! In his police interview, when they let him know about the luminol tracing of her body- he claimed she committed suicide!!! Along with his fake crying dramatic performance. He also texted her mother posing as her that she was okay, and staged dumped her car. This is a sociopath.

Shelby was so close to leaving just as his first wife had. I feel for those that miss her presense in their lives. So sad. They just reran this episode of 20/20.
