Interesting the thought is it was drug related yet "a large cache of prescription drugs" was found.

Not sure why that's contradictory. Many prescription drugs were diverted in the 1970s. They were just not the same ones we see today. Quaaludes, for example, were popular then, as were many types of prescription opioids and amphetamines.

Understood. When I was thinking about this I was wondering "why" the RX drugs were at the site, vice being taken by the offender. On further consideration, there could be many reasons.

Got it. I see now what you meant about the "why". It's not entirely clear but it sounds like maybe the drugs were buried nearby as they were described as "unearthed" and LE were searching there using a metal detector.
