Case File 1714DFNE
Melissa Ann Schmidt
Missing since September 5, 1995 from Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska
Classification: Endangered Missing
Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance
Schmidt was last seen in Lincoln, Nebraska on September 5, 1995. She went to the Nebraska State Fair. She hung out at a friend's house. She hopped on an old Schwinn and pedaled home from her friend's place to the apartment she shared with her mother and a younger sister in a big green house on the corner of 12th and D streets. She leaned the bike against a whitewashed pillar, locked it up and dropped her purse and shoes inside the door of the apartment building. And then she disappeared.
When Melissas's mother got home that night, she saw Missy's bike. She saw, inside the door to the apartment house, her daughter's purse and shoes, a bag of clothes from the night before, which Missy had spent with a friend, and a novel by her daughter's favorite author, Stephen King. She assumed Missy was asleep. The next morning, she got up about 5 to wake Missy for school and the long bus ride to East High, which Missy attended because she had been living with her stepfather in that part of town before moving in with her mother. And the 15-year-old girl's bed was empty. The mother called the school. She called Missy's friends. And she called police. Missy's mother is sure her daughter didn't run away that night.
