Missing New Jersey man's car found in Niagara Falls

A missing New Jersey man's car was found in a Niagara Falls hotel parking lot.

Joseph M. Lamartina was reported missing in Marlboro, New Jersey on December 14th. His car was found on February 8th, 2019 in the Niagara Falls Double Tree parking lot. Two witnesses reported seeing a man matching his description on January 2nd at the Sheraton on 3rd Street asking for money.

Police report Lamartina checked in to the hotel on December 15th, 2018 and checked out the following day. Another missing persons report has been filed for him in Niagara Falls.

His last address of residence is a $700,000 home owned by a couple with his last name, likely his Mom and Dad. Did he relocate to New York? Was he just visiting?

It seems as though his family didn’t know he was in niagra falls until his car was found there last week. The Marlboro address is his parents home.

The Double Tree and the Sheraton are a short walk from each other and in between is a very large Casino. A panhandler would be an unusual sight there as this area is also frequented by families/tourists going to see the falls which is about 1/4 mile walk just to the north.

IMO the two people who reported they may have seen Joey ran into someone matching his description at the Sheraton, not necessarily panhandling so to speak. He’s not originally from upstate NY, he’s from NJ. Maybe he lived upstate recently though.

I meant asking for money when I said panhandler. The Sheraton is connected to the Casino by a tunnel. There is lots of foot traffic though the lobby as this is the end of the tunnel and there is also a Rainforest Cafe and Spa just inside. It would stand out if someone were asking for money. I am sure it would be reported so I am sure the witnesses saw something. You refer to him as Joey- do you know him?

The witnesses reported the potential sighting the other day when they saw the Action Niagra falls Facebook page share joeys missing page, I am not denying they saw something. I haven’t seen him since high school.

"Why did he go to Niagara Falls?" Mary LaMartina, his mother, wondered. "Who was he going to meet?"

His family says LaMartina lived in Depew for about six months as a medical sales representative. He moved back to New Jersey about three years ago.

"I don't know why he left," Mary LaMartina said. "If anyone sees him, if anyone hears of his, please notify the police."

"Yes," Rizzo replied.

Its getting a lot of local news coverage in Western New York now. Full tank of gas and a note... doesn't explain where he was staying between Dec. 15th and Jan 9th. I wonder what else was on the to-do list?

So the to do list had “off the grid” dated the day after his car was found. I am sure they will be able to find out if his car was parked there the whole time or not. Hopefully he just needed a break and will be back soon.

ETA - maybe the electronics found in his car will be helpful for LE.

I assume that with two hotels and a casino there were lots of camera in the area. I hope law enforcement is already looking at footage ffrom all the cameras to see where he might have been. I wish they would say what else was on the to-do list.

Going "off the grid" requires a lot of prep. Shelter, food and supplies for a few months, transportation to where you are going. The facts that he was begging for money around the hotel shows he had no capabilities to go "off the grid, unless that just meant homeless and living on the streets. I so hope he is found and brought to warmth and safety.

Yes you could. There are miles of un-fenced access to the area just above the falls and the park is open 24hrs a day. There are lots of places without cameras as well.
