GUILTY NJ - Mother, 5 adults charged with beating, scalding 3-year-old, Newark, Dec 2018

A mother and five other adults have been arrested after they repeatedly beat and threw scalding water on a 3-year-old boy in order to punish him at the Newark home they share.

The mother, Natacha Smith, 43, of Newark, is charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Patricia Gamarra, 62, Mary Buchan, 55, Patricia Buchan, 28, Bridget Buchan, 23, and Homer Searcy, who is also known as Omar Searcy, 39, face the same charges.

Police said a Newark public preschool alerted authorities to the abuse.

Prosecutors said the abuse, which began in July, was a “systematic and coordinated beating” of the child with a belt and their fists. They also poured scalding water on him to punish him.

Five adults accused of torturing a 3-year-old boy in their care pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child on Tuesday.

A sixth suspect had her court appearance postponed.

Patricia Buchan, who was 7-months pregnant, has been allowed to remain on 24-hour home detention with an ankle monitor.

So I guess the 5 were in court on Tuesday the 18th? As I understand it.

Was postponed as her attorney couldn’t stay for detention hearing. She will remain in jail.
*Mary Buchan (55) arrested (12/7/18) & charged (12/12/18) with assault & endangering the welfare of a child. Plead not guilty.
*Patricia Buchan (28) arrested (12/7/18) & charged (12/12/18) with assault & endangering the welfare of a child.
Had 12/18/18 hearing postponed. She is 7 mos. Pregnant & allowed to remain on 24 hour home detention with ankle monitor; can only go to court or the hospital. Provided LE info/evidence against her mother (Mary Buchan).
*Bridget Buchan (23) arrested (12/7/18 & charged (12/12/18) with assault & endangering the welfare of a child. Plead not guilty.
Will remain in jail.
*Homer “Omar” Searcy (39) charged (12/12/18) with assault & endangering the welfare of a child. Plead not guilty.
Was already in custody in an unrelated matter. Denied release.
12/18/18 Update: All due back in court on Jan. 4th.

NJ woman burned boy, 3, with boiling water for urinating on floor


NEWARK — A 29-year-old mother of five has admitted to torturing a roommate's 3-year-old boy by scalding him with boiling water after he urinated on the floor.

Patricia Buchan pleaded guilty this week in a deal that could land her in prison for up to five years.

10/18/19 Update: Plead guilty to a plea deal. Could be sentenced up to 5 years. Sentencing on 12/6.
