Not very helpful to start blaming norwegian police

Perhaps not, what happened or did not happen it is water under the bridge. However, the sooner a search is started the bigger the chance that someone remembers seeing him. Also, people on holiday in the area, or those who were working temporarily, might still be around in the first days.

About the kayak: why would anybody drag a clumsy origami expensive kayak with him all the way from Holland if hecould easily have hired a kayakk on the spot that was suitable for the local sea conditions? Hmz

Yes. The kayak has me wondering on so many levels. Kayaks available everywhere, yet AK buys one of those 'toys for boys'. Did he show it to his friends? I know I would have! Look what's in here ... now pull this end and that end.... It's a boat!

Also, this gadget would have caught the attention of passers-by and other sailors and kayakers. It is not the kind of meeting that you would easily forget.

If I remember correctly, Norwegian police said during his stay in Bodø, his phone pinged in an area of 70 - 80 km around Bodø. When and where, I wonder, and would he have gone to places where he might have used the kayak?

Anyway not much news but nevertheless a share from a journalist who wrote about Arjen Kamphuis, short after his disapearance :

In Norway, cybersecurity specialist Arjen Kamphuis (47) has disappeared; On August 20, he checked out at his hotel in Bodø, a ten-hour train journey from Trondheim, from where he would fly back to the Netherlands on August 22. Gerard Janssen often consulted Kamphuis. 'He is someone with an alu hat, but with detailed knowledge.'
Text Gerard Janssen

Hackers fascinate me. So I spoke with Arjen Kamphuis about five times. A man with long red hair and a small pair of glasses. He was dressed in black and had a backpack with several laptops. Around his neck a USB stick with sensitive data and one with the Linux Tails control program. With that he started his computer. A message via Signal often remained unanswered for a long time. He regularly changed his telephone number. "Yes, sorry, I was offline for work." But when I got to speak to him, he had plenty of time. One time I met with him in the Arnhem hackerspace Hack 42, in a large white building in the woods near Arnhem. He had a friend with him. A man in a wheelchair. It turned out to be Bill Binney, once a high-ranking officer of the NSA and later whistleblower. Binney knew exactly how the NSA would rather not have people protect their data. That's why he set up a company to secure data exactly that way. Pretty Good Knowledge was the name of the company, and Kamphuis was the 'Technology & Security Director'. Kamphuis gave lectures with a monotonous voice, which was higher than you would expect at his posture. The helium balloon effect.

When it came to the technical capabilities of the NSA, Binney but Kamphuis did not have the highest word. Binney agreed to chuckle in the way of a father who is trumped by his gifted twelve-year-old son. Kamphuis answered all questions without having to think about it. As if he was lecturing in a monotonous voice, which was higher than you would expect at his posture. The helium balloon effect. He showed little emotion in his voice, but he was always alert and reacted to a new question or a small comment. I never heard him laugh, but something in his eyes betrayed a sensitive nature.

When I asked him how a foreign power could hack the elections in the Netherlands, he drew a dozen ways how you could do that. And then he came up with a scenario in which not only the elections were hacked, but in which the State of the Netherlands constitutionally ceased to exist. 'A sort of sharing by zero situation.'

HH KAMPHUIS PUTS WITH FUN HIS EVIL HAT
When you asked Kamphuis about the vulnerability of the Netherlands, he gladly put his evil hat on and he outlined how within a few hours you could lay flat Northwest Europe. Jamming the GPS signal, a shorthorm on the highways, the telephone network. Few countries were as automated as the Netherlands, and by the way: if you turned off the Amsterdam internet hub, the internet was out of the half world. It was all so easy that the only reason why it did not happen was that no one evidently benefited from it.

Kamphuis showed a mixture of compassion, fear and anger when it came to the Dutch government, who dealt with the cyber security of our democracy and digital infrastructure in an amateurish and irresponsible way. How could the government outsource cyber security to private entrepreneurs, who were also trusted 'on their beautiful blue eyes'. Kamphuis would be a terrorist from hell. That insight led him to conclude that it was a big deal with terrorism. It is fortunate that someone with the analytical and creative mind of Arjen Kamphuis does not really have an evil hat. He would be a terrorist from hell. That insight led him to the conclusion that it is far too bad with terrorism. And that fear of terrorism is used by intelligence services to raise money, so that they become even better in their core bussiness: eavesdropping on foreign politicians, NGOs, and companies. Concocting scenarios is one of the things he did for his clients. He also helped journalists secure their data. If you had a stick with an intelligence service from a government, a big company or a billionaire, then you had to go to Kamphuis. He could tell you exactly what to do if the NSA had you in sight. For example, buying a computer with an Intel chip prior to 2008 and not connecting to the internet. Together with the journalist Silkie Carlo he wrote the handbook 'Info Security for Journalists'.

NO DAY DREAMS BUT DAILY REALITY
Kamphuis seems to have run away from a clichéd espionage novel. Someone with an alu hat, but with so much detailed knowledge that you can not escape the impression that he knows more than is good for him. And now that he has also disappeared in Norway, it all starts to look like a Hollywood film. Sometimes I daydream sometimes about a scenario in which I find information that a large company like Shell, a government agency like the NSA or a billionaire like Peter Thiel wants to keep secret. Harvey Weinstein hired the company Black Cube to break into the computers of journalists. In most of these scenarios I am too coward to do something with it. In the other scenarios I call in the help of Arjen Kamphuis. For Kamphuis himself, these were not daydreams, but it was the daily reality. He helped journalists who feared for their lives from Turkey, Egypt and not to forget: from WikiLeaks.

It is difficult to get entangled in conspiracy theories at the disappearance of Arjen Kamphuis in Norway. The stories are already flying around on the internet. Has he gone undercover for WikiLeaks? Is he a Russian spy? Was he killed by Hillary Clinton? He himself could have invented many more and better scenarios. Hopefully it is one of these scenarios where none other than Kamphuis would come up, and he pops up again. Because a world without Arjen Kamphuis is a lot blacker. Especially for journalists who practice real journalism, in the spirit of George Orwell: 'Printing what someone else does not want printed' The kind of journalism where you often need the help of someone like Arjen Kamphuis.

We have learned that family has scheduled a meeting with dutch police this tuesday (October 9th). Within the FindArjen Research Initiative we are now in the process of putting together a list of relevant questions that family could take along and present to police.

Anyone with basic knowledge of the missing person case of Arjen Kamphuis is invited to help making that list the most complete and comprehensive list of 'Questions that should be asked'.

Please go and visite the site of the #FindArjen Research Initiative and help completing that list of questions.

In case you to not have an account for #FindArjen Research Initiative yet, please send a mail to findarjen (at) xs4all.nl and you will receive an invitation/account setup to contribute to the police-question list and investigation to support family and friends.

Bill Binney: served in the US Army Security Agency before joining the NSA in 1970. Became a whistleblower against NSA's "data overloading practices" (my expression). Founded Pretty Good Knowledge in Amsterdam About | Pretty Good Knowledge

Bill Binney (BB), has probably been a mentor to Arjen and passed on much knowledge about the ins and outs of the NSA.

According to various sources in the internet, BB's whistleblowing actvities are perhaps even more significant than those of Snowden. But: Snowden is living in exile while Bill Binney is not(?). (Haven't found anything on that and it seems that BB is moving around freely and giving interviews here and there.)

Any reaction by Bill Binney to Arjen's disappearance?

Kollega om den mystiske forsvinningen: – Helt sikker på at Arjen fortsatt er i live

In an anonymous office building in Amsterdam, Marco Visser is sitting in front of the computer. He is one of Arjen Kamphuis's closest colleagues, and has known him for four years. They work together in the company Pretty Good Knowledge, which helps companies with data security.

NRK has traveled to Amsterdam to get more answers in the mysterious disappearance case. Arjen Kamphuis was last seen when he left a hotel in Bodø on August 20th. Then his mobile signal was picked up in Stavanger, and all certain trails ended.

By now, nobody knows where the 47 year old is. But in his workplace, home in the Netherlands, they are sure he is alive.
"I'm sure he's alive somewhere. When he comes home I will give him a hug and a kick in the balls for what he has done to us."

The case has received great attention in Kamphuis's homeland, and Dutch police work closely with the Norwegian. The police in other European countries are also involved in the case.

Visser also says that they have never heard Kamphuis mention Bodø as any planned destination. "He said that he was going to Svalbard to watch polar bears, so everyone was surprised when he suddenly changed the plans to Bodø just before he left. I thought maybe it was a stop on the way to Svalbard."

Visser found that his colleague was missing when he did not turn up for a work meeting. It was not like Kamphuis, he says. When he tried to track down Kamphuis, he found out he never traveled to Svalbard.

"Why cancel the trip to travel to, no offense meant, Bodø? It's not exactly the world's navel."

Kamphuis spent ten days in Bodø before he was reported missing

Visser says he has no reason to believe Kamphuis has suffered an accident. He is too experienced, he believes. Nor does he think the disappearance has any connection to his past as a WikiLeaks employee, saying he is not involved there anymore.

According to Visser, Kamphuis was tired of activist life.

But he has made his own thoughts about what might have happened. He thinks something has scared him and that he is hiding.

"I think something has happened to him, either physically or mentally, which makes him want to stay hidden."

If that is correct why does not he contact you?

"He would have contacted us if he wanted to. He must be afraid, and dare not involve us," says Visser.

The police also work with the theory that Kamphuis may have staged his own disappearance. The reasons why people choose to disappear vary.

Mental illness, economics or relationship problems are common causes. Mostly men disappear.

Ancilla van der Leest, a close friend of Kamphuis, sees no obvious reason for his desire to disappear. Nevertheless, she does not want to rule out her friend's mental health.

"He was elated and happy before he left. He has good friends and a nice apartment in Amsterdam. His business is going well and he has a lot of job assignments. He had many plans for the fall."

NRK meets van der Leest at a cafe in Amsterdam. Since Arjen disappeared, she has worked day and night to get answers about the disappearance of their friend.

Most preferably she would have traveled to Norway, but she has a newborn baby to take care of.

Therefore, there was no one in the circle of friends who reacted when Arjen told about Norway's holiday trip. While he seldom took a vacation, he often traveled to places where he could enjoy nature.

Journalist Ilan Sluis works for The Netherlands's biggest daily newspaper, De Telegraaf. He does not think that Arjen has disappeared voluntarily.

"Let's say he thinks like an hacker. That he is kayaking, dropping his id papers as an experiment to see if he could get home without papers. But it has been six weeks. He would know that family and friends were worried and given a sign of life."

In recent weeks, he has worked closely on the disappearance case, and has written several reports.

Sluis is stopped by people on the street, who asks what he believes about the disappearance. Among other things, the intelligence organizations CIA or MI6 might be involved. The journalist has no good answers to what may have happened, but asks readers not to believe the wildest conspiracy theories.

Equally, the matter remains a mystery. When the kayak was found, Sluis was sure he had been victim of an accident. But when the phone contact appeared a few days later, the confusion was complete again.

"Given the security expert he is, his phone was very well secured. The chance that someone else could open the phone is small. I doesn't really make sense," according to Sluis.

Neither Ilan Sluis nor Ancilla van de Leest are impressed by the efforts of Norwegian police - especially in the start-up phase. They believe the police arrived late on the stage to start searching for Arjen.

"In the start-up phase, they were mostly concerned that he had not been formally reported missing. That was when he had been reported missing for several days already," says Van de Leest.

She believes that if the search had started faster, Arjen might have been found. Sluis fears that time is working against them and against a solution of the disappearance.

"Everything is standing still now. It has been a long time to find new pieces of the jigsaw puzzle. Both for the police and us in the media."

Ancilla van der Leest has not given up the hope that her friend is alive. But it has been six weeks and she acknowledges that she must be realistic.

"If he is no longer alive, it is still important that he is found. If he has been the victim of an accident, then it's tragic, but you can always say goodbye and have a funeral. In this case we have nothing. We have no answers."

In what areas have the phone been used since he arrived the 8th ? Where have his credit cards been used ? There are at least 4 days not covered with bookings, between Trondheim and Bodø. I belive these questions allready are on the list as such information will give a better pattern of his movements, as a hiker/paddler tourist or if his movements seems more work-related, or if something of his "usual behaviour" changed during his stay.

Arjen Kamphuis told his friends that he was going to Svalbard to see the icebears. Then he canged his mind and bought a kayak.

When did Arjen buy the kayak? Why did he buy this type of kayak? What did he tell the seller? Did he tell his friends? Whom?

Did Arjen try out the kayak in the Netherlands? When? Where?

Are there images available of AK’s departure from Schiphol? What luggage did he carry? Tent? Life-vest? Was he alone? Did he have company?

Was he carrying Norwegian money? Did he use ATM’s in Norway? Where? How much money did he take?

Did he use credit cards or bank cards? Were these cards in the purse that was found by the fisherman?

What were the exact dates of his trip to Norway? Did he stay in other places besides Bodø? Where? When?

How many phones did he have?
Where did they ping?

Is it correct that his phone(s) pinged in a radius of 70 - 80 kms around Bodø?
Where would that have been and on what date and time?
Are these places where he might have gone kayaking?
What else might he have done in those places?
The background to these and other questions is that we want to have an overview of how Arjen passed his holidays. If he stayed in bed all the time because he was tired from the heatwave in Holland, we would like to know. If he went places with his kayak, probably someone, possibly a fellow kayaker would have noticed him. The foldable kayak is an interesting gadget. They may have even taken pictures. If pictures were taken, we would like to have them. A call for witnesses has to be as specific as possible. Who saw this kayak in that area on that date. That is why an overview from day to day has to be established.

Where did he store the kayak while he was staying in hotels?
This is one of those mysteries. Assuming he went to Bodø for kayaking, would he unfold the kayak each day and put it back into its pack each night? If he made day trips to different parts of the coast, a portable kayak makes more sense, but if he stayed in Bodø, why bother? If he did go on day trips, would he take the kayak (15 kilos) to his hotel of leave it in a locker near the station?

Are there indications that AK searched on-line for places to go kayaking? Did he search for other activities? Like for instance walking? bird-watching?
As far as we know he was a beginner and a cautious person. He would not have gone to dangerous areas, or areas for experienced kayakers. Or would he?.

How did AK clean and dry his kayak?
Salt and sand are sticky. Would he need to wash it off? This is one of those tricky details that i haven’t seen in the optimistic ORU kayak videos.

A bloodhound will still be able to follow Arjen’s trail from the Scandic Bodø hotel and in other places. Is it possible to search for his trail with a bloodhound or another search dog?
I agree this is a leading question. I also hope Arjen’s scent has been preserved, for instance dirty laundry or a hair brush. If it is known which train carriages were at Bodø station on August 20, these can also be searched plus the stations (Fauske! Rognan!) where he might have gotten off the train and the route he took. Or the places where he might have been seen (Rogaland!)
Btw it does not have to be a bloodhound, SIGNI’s SAR dogs are also very good with older trails…

Why wasn’t the water of the fjord searched with dogs after the wallet was found? When will that happen?
FYI cadaver dogs and search dogs also work in colder weather.

Regarding the ice-bears that AK apparently told someone he wanted to see- is that something he has done in the past, does he have a keen interest in the bears, could ice-bears be a code name for something or somewhere else?
Are ice bears the same as polar bears?
imo, speculation.

Arjen Kamphuis told his friends that he was going to Svalbard to see the icebears. Then he canged his mind and bought a kayak.

When did Arjen buy the kayak? Why did he buy this type of kayak? What did he tell the seller? Did he tell his friends? Whom?

According to Algemeen Dagblad, Dutch police have received a tip that 47-year-old bought a collapsible kayak in a store just outside Amsterdam before traveling to Norway. According to the seller, Kamphuis has planned to paddle in the Norwegian fjords. His friends have expressed surprise bythe kajakk as he usually went hiking the mountains.

Did Arjen try out the kayak in the Netherlands? When? Where?

Dont think so as he bought the thing just before he left and told the seller is was for the No. fjords

Are there images available of AK’s departure from Schiphol? What luggage did he carry? Tent? Life-vest? Was he alone? Did he have company?
Unsolved
Was he carrying Norwegian money? Did he use ATM’s in Norway? Where? How much money did he take?
Unsolved
Did he use credit cards or bank cards? Were these cards in the purse that was found by the fisherman?
There where money and credit cards in the purse
What were the exact dates of his trip to Norway? Did he stay in other places besides Bodø? Where? When?
He arrived in Trondheim 8th of August. Only the 2 bookings in Bodø is known.
How many phones did he have?
At least 2
Where did they ping?
Fauske and 3 basestations in Rogaland: Vikeså, Bjerkreim and sorry dont remeber the last one, all close to eachother
Is it correct that his phone(s) pinged in a radius of 70 - 80 kms around Bodø?
Where would that have been and on what date and time?
22h the 20th August his mobile phone was registered at a base station in Fauske, outside Bodø.
Are these places where he might have gone kayaking?
Yes
What else might he have done in those places?
Hiking, checking the spy-stations...dont know

Where did he store the kayak while he was staying in hotels?

As far as we know he was a beginner and a cautious person. He would not have gone to dangerous areas, or areas for experienced kayakers. Or would he?.
-his friends says he is "better safe than sorry". Going out near the worldst largest stream is not safe for an amateur..

Or the places where he might have been seen (Rogaland!)
Btw it does not have to be a bloodhound, SIGNI’s SAR dogs are also very good with older trails…

-they did some search with dogs in the area where the kayak was found but i belive there should have been more searhes in the fjord and on land, maybe a budget question priority by the police :(
Why wasn’t the water of the fjord searched with dogs after the wallet was found? When will that happen?
FYI cadaver dogs and search dogs also work in colder weather.
-if they have not done until now...Im not so sure they ever will do

Regarding the ice-bears that AK apparently told someone he wanted to see- is that something he has done in the past, does he have a keen interest in the bears, could ice-bears be a code name for something or somewhere else?
Are ice bears the same as polar bears?
imo, speculation.

ice bears is the same as polar bears and they are not in the mainland, Svalbard only

Wow,a lot of questions there!
Seems to me that cant be answered...police does not seem to update about this..media speculates..we're in there also!

I do think,Arjen is a very private person,he does not want to drag his family, friends, people who are close to him into this..or whatever he had on his mind...when he booked..his "holiday!"

Speaking from my mind...I am very protective of my family,my friends,my loved ones..if I wanted to take a risk...it is on my own account, only!

Activism can be very tricky..on the level and surroundings he circled!
Snitch,trolls..on the internet,there are many
He did NOT protest, where you can meet face to face,he kinda (imo) works underground

I really do not know how many tracking device there are on FB/social media, but there is!

Lets be real...on the internet, you are never safe, unless you know how...

Creditcards? Trackable! (Do you know how hard it is in most of the EU to reserve/book a car without cc? Do you know why?>>I DO...you cant pay cash..or pinn or whatever) Only creditcards to book a car...

Everything leaves a digital foothprint behind if we access the internet..unless you have updated knowledge...wich most of us are unware or do NOT care

I used to laugh about it...because it only happend in the US...well..not laughing anymore tbh

Two scenarios with AK belongings and Kayak found. Either he had an accident OR the disappearance has been made to look like an accident. In either case...he may never be found. I don’t want to come across as not hopeful - but realistically what are the options?

Hi @cpeacock1
There is always hope/faith,that always remains...!
I do think & believe..as long as we push for answers...(some of it)...will be known.
