NV - Jessica Valenzuela, 32, dead, 36 injured, car plows into crowd, Las Vegas, 20 Dec 2015 *arrest*

What, only a millennium? Why not an eon? If you don't sentence her for a billion years, what sort of a message will it send to other severely disturbed people who will commit their crimes with no consideration of the consequences?

I don't believe she was "severely disturbed". I believe her behavior was programmed into her genes, her DNA. I see horrors played out almost every day on the news.

No, at the moment, I don't have a link, just an opinion from reading and reading and seeing and seeing and living in a diverse neighborhood. I cannot deny what I see and hear with my own eyes and hear with my own ears from the friends I have of different cultures. Like it or not, until we understand people ARE different, there will be no understandings, solutions, or peace.

In my opinion, of course.

But she has been normal, led a good life. Didn't she go to school, have a good job, try to start her own company?
If losing a man brings you that far down, you need some relationship counseling.

Woman charged in fatal Strip crash sent to state mental health hospital

A judge on Friday ordered Lakeisha Holloway, the woman accused of driving her car onto a busy Strip sidewalk, killing one person and injuring dozens of others, sent to a state mental health hospital.

Two doctors raised concerns about Holloway’s competency, and the criminal case against her will essentially remain on hold while she is treated, although she will remain in custody.

“There are concerns whether or not she can rationally cooperate with her attorneys,” Deputy Public Defender Scott Coffee said. “Right now we can’t do anything. We’re in a holding pattern … So until she’s able to go forward, rationally assist, she’s going to be at a state facility.”

Portland native unfit for trial in fatal Las Vegas Strip crash, judge rules

LAS VEGAS — A judge decided Friday there won't be a trial anytime soon for a 25-year-old Oregon native accused of killing one pedestrian and injuring at least 34 others from several states by intentionally driving a car onto a crowded Las Vegas Strip sidewalk.

Lakeisha Nicole Holloway argued with Clark County District Court Judge David Barker, said she didn't trust the public defenders handling her case, and muttered to herself while Barker ordered her sent to a state mental hospital for observation and treatment.

The judge noted that one doctor found Holloway was unable to assist in her defense, and she refused a second evaluation.

"Excuse me sir. I don't need mental health assessment," Holloway said as she stood in shackles with a uniformed court officer at her side. "That's absolutely a mess. They're trying to cover something. That's not cool."

Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary of the deadly crash on the Las Vegas Strip that killed one person and injured dozens.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police say Lakeisha Holloway, 25, plowed into a group of pedestrians on the Strip in front of the Planet Hollywood and Paris hotels and casinos. At least 37 people were hit during the crash.

After a competency hearing in March, an order of commitment was issued to Holloway until she returned to court hearings in June. An additional competency hearing with Judicial Officer Jennifer Togliatti on Oct. 7 found that Holloway was "not competent as she is not capable of understanding the charges against her and is unable to assist counsel in her defense."

Holloway was recommitted to maximum-security psychiatric facility Lakes Crossing Center in northern Nevada, where she remains. A future court date will be set once competency is determined.

A woman pleaded not guilty today to charges that she intentionally drove onto a Las Vegas Strip sidewalk, killing one pedestrian and injuring at least 34 others less than a week before Christmas 2015.

Lakeisha Nicole Holloway, 26, entered her plea after a Las Vegas judge recently ruled her competent to stand trial, following months of treatment at a state psychiatric center. Holloway, a former resident of Portland, Oregon, faces charges of murder, attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon.

On the inside of Jessica Valenzuela's wedding ring, are two words: "Forever Mine."

"She was just the best: the best wife, the best mother," Axel Valenzuela, Jessica's husband said. "I was the luckiest guy in the world."

The Valenzuelas said this time of year is difficult. First, it's the anniversary of Jessica's death, then they have to spend the holidays without her. Still, Axel said maybe Jessica died so other people could be saved.

"I miss her and I love her, but maybe this can be a memory, a reminder. And I can know that something good came from her death, and this won't happen again."

Woman accused of hitting 37 pedestrians on Las Vegas Strip is back in court
Lakeisha Holloway is set to go to trial this summer, but in her most recent court hearing, her attorney indicated that the defense may soon be asking to push that date back.

Since there were so many victims, and even more witnesses, the paperwork is vast.

Holloway's attorney says he is still going through those documents. He told the judge in court Wednesday that he doesn't think her defense will be ready by the late August 27 trial date.

Trial delayed for woman accused of plowing through crowd on Las Vegas Strip

Lakeisha Holloway’s trial has been pushed back. It was supposed to start at the end of Aug., but Holloway’s defense team asked the judge for more time.

Chief deputy public defender Joseph Abood said Holloway is in such a fragile emotional state, they haven’t been able to present her all of the evidence yet.

“This was a full blown mental illness,” Abood said. “She was trying to get away from the delusions to protect herself and her child. Now that she's medicated and the gravity of what happened here is sinking in, this is extremely emotional and difficult for her.”

Holloway was scheduled to be back in court on Sept. 12. Abood said he hopes to set a trial date at that time.

Abood added Holloway’s toddler, who was in the back seat of the car at the time of the crash, is living with her biological father out of the country.

On Monday, Lakeisha Holloway is expected to be back in court.

Holloway is accused of killing one person and injuring dozens others while driving on a sidewalk outside of Planet Hollywood on the Las Vegas Strip in December 2015.

Holloway is expected to ask for a motion to dismiss her counsel and request her trial be delayed. It was supposed to start in january.

A new trial date has been set for a woman accused of driving her car onto a Strip sidewalk in 2015, killing one person and injuring dozens more.

During a hearing on Thursday, District Judge Tierra Jones scheduled 31-year-old Lakeisha Holloway’s jury trial for May 30, nearly seven and a half years after the fatal crash, court records show.

According to the online court records, Deputy Public Defender Anna Clark told the judge Thursday that she is on track to be ready for trial by May.

The judge called off a trial that had been scheduled to begin May 30 and set a closed-door hearing with Morton next Wednesday to determine if she will get a new lawyer. No new trial date was set.

Paris Paradise Morton said nothing in court as she learned she’ll stand trial in May 2024 on murder and 70 other felony charges in the crash that killed an Arizona woman and injured dozens of other people a few days before Christmas 2015.

Morton remains jailed without bail. Last month, she rejected a plea bargain that would have avoided trial and sent her to prison with the possibility of parole, and told a judge she was at odds with her court-appointed lawyers. The length of her sentence offer was not disclosed. She could face life in prison if she is convicted at trial.

Deputy Clark County Public Defender Anna Clark continued to represent Morton on Thursday. Clark declined outside court to comment about the case but said she and attorney Scott Coffee are still handling Morton’s defense.

Morton, now 32, has been prosecuted as Lakeisha Nicole Holloway, the name she gave to authorities when she surrendered following the crash. She had legally changed her name weeks earlier, from Holloway to Morton.
