Trump and his lawyers expect court to work like in the movies.

"Today... was a bit like watching 'Legally Blonde,' MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin told Chris Hayes on his show.

She cited a critical denouement at the end of the film where the judge cuts short a trial after damning testimony.

"For our viewers who know this movie well, there's a moment that the end of the movie where a witness on the stand breaks down and admits to a crime, and the judge essentially rules the trial over, because Elle Woods' client is 'not guilty!'"
.....
And it was a day where Trump's former "fixer" Michael Cohen was grilled by Trump’s attorneys in an attempt to catch him in a contradiction.

Rubin pointed out that Trump family attorney Cliff Robert tried and failed in big screen fashion to secure what is called a "directed verdict" -- essentially urging the judge to make a hasty decision in favor of Trump solely based on Cohen's testimony on the witness stand.

“Absolutely denied,” Engoron quipped. “This case has evidence, an incredible amount—evidence all over the place…That’s absurd, Mr. Robert.”

"He moved for what's called a directed verdict -- that's asking the judge, basically, truncate the trial, and end it now, fine for us," Rubin said on the show. "And he didn't do that."

"But that's what they expected to happen. And they honestly seemed surprised."

While team Trump was taken aback by the denial, Rubin noted how Trump himself "seemed just downright angry."

Oh, this is a scathing criticism of Trump's defense team ( and, essentially of him).

I'm just howling with laughter.

So what comes next? Another fine in an increment of $5000 more than before?

How to shut Former Guy up already?? Jail him for 24 hours is my wish, but I fear all the judges are hesitant to take that step…

jmo
Or perhaps double it?

Wasn't the 1st one 5K; the second 10K, time for a 20K third!! His supporters will be out a million by Sunday.

fining him, no matter how much will have effect-- he has millions and he can raise whatever he wants from his acolytes---- the only thing that will hopefully change his behavior is a day in the slammer- you know, an uncomfortable cot in a tiny cell with a toilet--- he would probably go ballistic but that is what some judge needs to do--- it is obvious fines are not working.

A judge could put him in the slammer for one night for contempt of court

A judge could put him in the slammer for one night for contempt of court

I don't think putting him in jail for a night is really going to do anything other than further inflame his hysterical outbursts.

I think a methodical doubling of each fine until he reaches something like 10 contempt charges, and then bring in the handcuffs.

Friday, October 27th:
*Bench Trial continues (Day 18) (@ 10am ET) – NY - New York vs. Donald J. Trump (76/now 77), Donald Trump, Jr. (45) & Eric Trump (38/now 39) & the Trump Organization, Inc. (Allen Weisselberg (75/now 76) & Jeffrey McConney) are being sued by Letitia James, the New York Attorney General, who is leading a civil investigation (which cannot result in criminal charges filed on 9/21/22) & has spent years looking at whether the company committed various acts of fraud over several decades. In the civil case, Ms. James has filed a lawsuit against Trump & two of his children accusing them of "astounding" fraud & deception.
New York is seeking $250 million in financial penalties & asked the court to ban Trump, Donald Trump Jr. & Eric Trump from serving as an officer or director in any corporation registered or licensed in New York. James also requested the court ban the former president & his business from acquiring real estate in New York or from applying for loans from any New York financial institution for five years. James's civil case accuses Trump of lying from 2011 to 2021 about asset values at the Trump Organization, as well as his own net worth, in order to obtain better terms from lenders & insurers.
Lawsuit against: Donald John Trump, Donald Trump, Jr, Eric Trump, Allen Weisselberg, Jeffrey McConney, The Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, The Trump Organization, Inc., Trump Organization LLC, DJT Holdings LLC, DJT Holinds Managing Memer, Trump Endeavor 12 LLC, 401 North Wabash Venture LLC, Trump Old Post of Fice LLC, 40 Wall Street LLC & Seven Springs LLC.
All charges against Ivanka Trump were dismissed in June, 2023.
Bench Trial began on 10/2/23. (could last until 12/22/23 per Judge).
The lawsuit’s remaining 6 counts allege similar acts of fraud (that Trump inflated his assets on statements of financial condition that he submitted to banks & insurers for personal gain).
Judge Arthur F. Engoron presiding / NY State Attorney General Leticia James & senior enforcement counsel Kevin Wallace.
Defense attorney Christopher Kise & Jesus Suarez & Alina Habba for Trump, Weisselberg & the rest of the defendants for Trump Org. / Clifford Robert of Robert & Robert PLLC for Donald, Jr. & Eric.
Trump fined $5,000 for violating his gag order. Justice Engoron did *not* hold him in contempt & noted it was "first time" violation & credited Trump's attorney's arguments that it was "inadvertent." "Make no mistake: future violations, whether intentional or unintentional," will lead to "far more severe sanctions," including "possibly imprisoning" Trump.
The judge holds a hearing (10/26/23) & calls Trump to testify on his remarks. Trump was just on the stand & despite expressly finding his testimony was not credible, Judge Engoron fined him only $10k payable within 30 days.

10/26/23 Update: Manhattan judge released a written order on Thursday explaining why Trump's sworn testimony denying attacking a law clerk "rings hollow & untrue." That finding is central to Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron imposing a $10,000 fine on Trump for his second violation of a gag order protecting courtroom staff. Trump has claimed that he had been referring to his ex-fixer Michael Cohen as the "partisan" sitting "alongside" Engoron, but the judge said on Wednesday that excuse was "not credible." Trump's attorney Christopher Kise vowed on Thursday to appeal Engoron's order.

Have any of the other miscreants named in this suit showed up in court yet? Any sign of Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Allen Weisselberg, or Jeffrey McConney?

Besides Trump I have seen Eric mentioned being in court but in the audience behind his dad. The others I have no idea. No mention in articles that I have seen.

Anything a judge does inflames him- I still think a night in the slammer would be an appropriate punishment for contempt of court: he will rant and "lash out" and all his usual antics---

@KlasfeldReports

Up first: Ivanka Trump's attorney Bennet Moskowitz"Ms. Trump does not live in New York. She is not domiciled here. [...]She does not transact business here."(Read the updated story at the top of the thread about on NYAG's view of her business ties in the Empire State.)

Moskowitz scoffs at NYAG's argument that Ivanka Trump consented

Justice Engoron puts Ivanka's lawyer on the spot:Did Ivanka Trump ever submit a sworn statement?Moskowitz replies no, but he offers to do so today. The judge suggests it's late in the game to offer that, because he planned to rule today.

After Moskowitz ends his arguments with a rhetorical flourish — "that's the breaks" — Justice Engoron, ever the stickler on language, interjects: "The expression is 'them's the breaks.'"

Trump's attorney Chris Kise speaks next, arguing that the NYAG wants to call Ivanka Trump simply to create a "media event."

Kise calls the subpoena "overbroad," paving the way for a "free-for-all" on "one of President Trump's children."Engoron pushes back on that: "It's not like a total shot in the dark."

Kise rejects the "idea that somehow Ms. Trump is under the control of the Trump Organization," quipping that anyone over the age of 13 isn't under her father's control.Engoron chuckles at that line.

NYAG: "They have a very good idea of what we want to ask Ivanka Trump." [...]"We have her examination during the investigation."

NYAG:"The idea that we should have taken her deposition is a red herring." She owns multiple businesses in this state.

Ivanka Trump must testify in AG's fraud trial in person, Justice Engoron rules.

Despite being dismissed from the case, the judge finds she conducted business and owns property in NY and failed to submit evidence to rebut that. She can appeal and won't testify before Nov. 1

The testimony of Donald Trump’s former tax lawyer Sheri Dillon continued Friday morning after a hearing where Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Ivanka Trump to testify at the trial as early as next week.

State attorney Louis Solomon attempted to highlight development restrictions that Trump allegedly agreed to for two properties that appeared to contradict proposed conservation easements.

“Yes, it’s complicated. For the most part, it didn't matter,” Dillon testified, arguing that the restrictions would not impact Trump’s conservation easements.

After an hour of similar questions and responses, Engoron appeared to lose patience and briefly excused the witness from the stand.

“I feel we are two or three elements away from anything that is relevant,” Engoron said. “It seems to me this is becoming a game of gotcha.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James will likely rest her case against former President Donald Trump during the week of Nov. 6 following at least four days of testimony from Trump and his children.

State attorney Kevin Wallace told Judge Arthur Engoron that the state plans to call Donald Trump Jr. on Wednesday, followed by Eric and Ivanka Trump on the following Thursday and Friday, respectively.

The state’s final witness, the former president, will likely begin his direct examination on Monday, Nov. 6, according to Wallace.

“We like to keep families together,” Engoron joked as Wallace set the schedule.

Trump’s lawyer, Chris Kise, previously told ABC News that he plans to recall some Trump Organization witnesses for the defense’s own case, meaning the trial is likely to stretch into November or later before concluding.
