'They found me and tried to kidnap me,' witness says of El Chapo's Sinaloa cartel

November 18, 2018

"Blindfolded and surrounded by armed guards, Jose Ruben Gil said he never knew where he was going, but when the helicopter landed at an undisclosed location in Mexico, the first thing he saw was a mansion on a hill.

It was 2003 and Gil, eager to increase the supply of drugs flowing his way, said he was summoned by leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the world's most powerful and violent organized crime organizations.

Gil, who took the witness stand in Buffalo federal court last week, said it was his first and only face-to-face meeting with Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

"It may seem like something out of Hollywood, but it isn't," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan A. Tokash. "It's real life."

Gil's account of his meeting with Guzmán and Sinaloa leader Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada García came during the trial of two men accused of overseeing one of the largest drug rings to ever operate in Western New York...."

Mexican drug lord, Beltran Leyva, dead at 56 of cardiac arrest

"MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Hector Beltran Leyva, a Mexican drug lord whose cartel earned a reputation as one of the country’s most vengeful and ruthless, died late on Sunday in hospital of cardiac arrest after being transferred from jail with chest pain, Mexican authorities said.

Beltran Leyva had been incarcerated since March 2, 2016 in Federal Prison Number 1, a maximum security facility in central Altiplano, Mexico, where he was facing federal prosecution for various crimes, the Mexico Interior Ministry said in a statement announcing the death.
Nicknamed “the H,” according to the statement, Beltran Leyva’s capture in 2014 near a town where he had posed as an art and real estate dealer was seen as a major victory for Mexican authorities in their decade-long war against drug gangs.

The snaring of the Beltran Leyva cartel’s boss dealt a serious blow to a drug gang named after a group of brothers who became infamous for the bloody turf war waged with their former ally, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Guzman is currently facing trial for drug trafficking in federal court in Brooklyn...."

Monday, Nov. 19th:
*Trial continues (Day 4) (@ 9:30am ET) - NY – Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera (El Chapo) (~61) arrested & charged with smuggled 155 tons of cocaine into U.S. Sinaloa drug cartel chief. Guzmán faces 17-count indictment charging him with drug trafficking, murder conspiracy & money laundering spanning nearly three decades. Plead not guilty to all charges. No bail.
Prosecutors say Guzmán ran Mexico's Sinaloa cartel from 1989 to 2014. In that time, they allege the cartel brought cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine & marijuana into the U.S. Prosecutors also charged Guzmán in connection with the assassinations of thousands of competitors. Plead not guilty to all charges. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
Trial expected to last several months. Also for trafficking, conspiracy & firearms in California, Arizona, Texas, Illinois, Florida & New York.

11/13/18 Day 1: Opening statements in the trial against “El Chapo” were delayed this morning after a juror who’d previously expressed reservations during jury selection was replaced by an alternate. A juror cried last week when she was selected & today the judge excused her, fearing she could suffer from a breakdown; juror excused ‘over anxiety’. That has delayed proceedings. It was unclear how long it might take to select a replacement, with a new juror expected to come from the original pool of 1,000 potential panelists who failed to make the cut. Opening statements were begun. Trial continues on 11/14.
11/14/18 Day 2: Prosecutors have asked Judge Brian Cogan to strike the opening statement made by Joaquín Guzman's lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, yesterday. Prosecutors claim - in a letter sent to the judge - that Lichtman tried to improperly sway the jury by arguing Guzman had been selectively targeted for prosecution, an argument the court had barred him from making. A federal judge rejected a prosecution request to throw out the entire opening statement presented by a lawyer for Mexican drug lord Guzmán but admonished attorney Lichtman for making alarming claims he likely can't support with evidence at the trial. Opening statements continued today. State witnesses: Retired US Customs Agent Carlos Salazar. Jose Ruben Gil. Jesus "El Rey" Zambada Garcia, was a member in Sinaloa drug cartel (brother of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, leader). Trial continues on 11/15.

11/15/18 Day 3: 2 more jurors opt out from the trial of Guzman. Lawyers were forced to go through the painstaking process of selecting 2 more jurors. State witnesses: Jesus "El Rey" Zambada Garcia. Judge called an early end to testimony due to power outages. Snow storm coming to Manhattan. Trial continues 11/19.
11/16/18: No trial on Friday. Continues on 11/19.

In related news to the Guzman trial, drug boss Hector Manuel Beltran Leyva, once one of Mexico's most-wanted men, died Sunday after suffering a heart attack in jail.

Beltran Leyva, 56m, was arrested in 2014 in San Miguel de Allende, but had eluded an extradition request from the US.

The family-run Beltran Leyva cartel was once a leading player in Mexican drug trafficking, with control of the US border region in Sonora. In 2008, a federation dominated by the Sinaloa Cartel, which included the Beltran Leyva organisation, broke apart, sparking one of the bloodiest episodes of Mexican cartel infighting.

Brothers Alfredo and Carlos were arrested, while Arturo was killed by security forces. Hector's wife Clara Laborin Archuleta was arrested in 2016 after taking over cartel operations and trying to reassert control in the Pacific Coast resort of Acapulco. Splinter groups have subjected Acapulco to unrelenting waves of violence and extortions.

Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is suspected of having provided intelligence that led to the arrest of Alfredo.

Jesus 'El Rey' Zambada is expected to return to the witness stand today. His older brother told the jury that his older brother, Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, and Guzman used armies of assassins to kill their enemies.

'El Rey' is the younger brother of what prosecutors say is Guzman's longtime partner in the Sinaloa cartel, Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada. In his lengthy testimony, 'El Rey' told the court his brother worked with 'El Chapo' and others to form the Sinaloa cartel, smuggling tons of drugs from Mexico to the US.

19 November 2018 15:08
'El Rey', 57, who has been in police custody since 2008, is the first of several cooperators testifying against Guzman in hopes of leniency at sentencing. The defence claim the deals have given them an incentive to exaggerate the role of Guzman, who pleaded not guilty after being extradited to the US last year.

19 November 2018 15:08
Much of Zambada's testimony focused on bribery, one of his main duties as top lieutenant to the cartel-s top bosses - his older brother, Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, and Guzman. Based in Mexico City, where he kept watch over tons of cocaine stashed in a warehouse, Jesus Zambada claimed he bought off federal and local police, prosecutors, airport officials and authorities in the city at a cost of about $300,000 a month in exchange for information and protections that kept the sprawling drug operation running smoothly.

He testified Guzman once dispatched him to the state of Guerrero in 20014 to give a military general there $100,000 in cash.

The general "is a friend of mine," he recalled Guzman telling him. "Give him a hug and notify him that I'll be working around the state."

19 November 2018 15:08
Zambada hadn't yet met Guzman when the kingpin escaped from prison by hiding in a laundry bin in 2001 and on the run in the Mexican countryside. He testified his older brother, worried that a special military force was closing in on Guzman, arranged to have a helicopter extract him from the area and instructed his sibling to find a "semi-deserted location" in central Mexico where it could land.

When the helicopter touched down, the Zambadas were there to greet him. The older one and Guzman embraced before the younger one, along with his wife, whisked him away in the backseat of his car, he testified.

As they approached a toll booth on the nearly three-hour drive to Mexico City, Zambada urged Guzman "to put a newspaper in front of his face because he was very wanted then."

Later, at the sight of the Mexico City police approaching the car, Guzman looked troubled, he said. That was before he informed him he had arranged for the escort.

"Don't worry about it," he said to Guzman. "These are our people. No one is going to touch us from here on out."

Apparently, it doesn't take much to put El Chapo into a murderous rage. According to today's testimony (still from Rey Zambada), Chapo had Rodolfo Carrillo Fuentes, a cartel ally, killed in 2004 outside a movie theater in Culiacan after he refused to shake Chapo's hand.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 2h2 hours ago
Chapo also had Julio Beltran-Leyva, another cartel ally, killed in 2005--at a traffic light--after he disobeyed an order not to make a cocaine shipment to Acapulco.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 2h2 hours ago
Chapo emerged in today's testimony as a hothead, the kind of man who relaxed on his day off by taking target practice at his hideout in the mountains with a bazooka. Chapo, Zambada said, wanted to kill a high-ranking Mexican cop just because the cop wouldn't take bribes.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 2h2 hours ago
Drug trafficking, it seems, is an occupation that does not promote longevity. The bodies are really stacking up today.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 2h2 hours ago
But these guys are tough. There was testimony today about one cartel gunmen who was knocked unconscious by a bullet for 5 to 10 minutes. When he finally woke up, he told Rey Zambada, "Oh, it's just a scratch."

Jesus 'El Rey' Zamabada said in court today that 'El Chapo' Guzman once had Rodolfo Carrillo Fuentes killed because he didn't shake Guzman's hand. Fuentes was the brother of Vicente Carrillo Fuentes who ran the Juarez cartel. This assassination then caused a turf war between rival cartels Sinaloa and Juarez, 'El Rey' testified.

"When [Rodolfo] left, Chapo gave him his hand and said, 'See you later, friend,' and Rodolfo just left him standing there with his hand extended," Zambada told the court.

19 November 2018 19:56
Jesus 'El Rey' Zambada claimed that he was ordered to pay $250,000 (£194,000) in bribes to the Mexican military.

A lieutenant colonel in the military demanded "$250,000, and if we don't do that, they're going to capture him [Guzman]," Jesus Zambada said he told his brother.

19 November 2018 19:57
The aforementioned military operation was allegedly aborted, so Guzman invited Jesus Zambada and his wife to breakfast at his hideout in the pine trees of the remote Sinaloa mountains, the witness said.

19 November 2018 20:05
During today's trial, 'El Rey' also said that Guzman would frequently boast about his lavish weapons. Guzman had a bazooka, AK-47s and a .38-caliber pistol engraved with his initials, Zambada said, with diamonds on the handle.

El Chapo allegedly had cartel leader’s brother killed over handshake diss

November 19, 2018

"Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman once had the brother of a leader of an allied cartel killed because he didn’t shake his hand — a hit the sparked a turf war between the Sinaloa and Juarez enterprises, a witness testified in Brooklyn court Monday.

The pint-size drug lord and head of the world’s most powerful cartel felt disrespected after his 2004 meeting with Rodolfo Carrillo Fuentes, whose brother Vicente Carrillo Fuentes ran the Juarez cartel, said turncoat Sinaloa underling Jesus “El Rey” Zambada.

“When [Rodolfo] left, Chapo gave him his hand and said, ‘See you later, friend,’ and Rodolfo just left him standing there with his hand extended,” Zambada told the jurors.

Zambada has been testifying at Guzman’s drug-trafficking trial since last week...."

Missing North Carolina Teacher Was Killed In Mexico By Drug Trafficker: Governor (with clip)
Patrick Braxton-Andrew, who taught high school Spanish, vanished during a walk in Chihuahua late last month.

"A North Carolina high school teacher reported missing in Mexico last month was murdered by a local drug trafficker, authorities said, ending a desperate weeks-long search by his family and friends.

The man, Patrick Braxton-Andrew, 34, taught Spanish at a private school in Mooresville, about 30 miles north of Charlotte. He regularly visited Latin America and was traveling solo in the state of Chihuahua when he vanished on Oct. 28 during an afternoon walk in the town of Urique, his family said.

Chihuahua Gov. Javier Corral, in a statement released Sunday, said Braxton-Andrew was killed by drug dealer José Noriel Portillo Gil, also known as “El Chueco” (the Crooked), in an area that’s controlled by the powerful Sinaloa cartel. That organized crime gang was headed by the notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman until his arrest. It’s not clear whether Braxton-Andrew was directly killed by Portillo Gil or one of his associates...."

Only hours before a witness at the El Chapo trial was expected to testify about bribing the president of Mexico, American prosecutors filed a sealed memo to preclude some of his testimony. We don't know what testimony the US govt wants to keep secret, but the timing is...curious.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 5h5 hours ago
Now Judge Brian M. Cogan will have to decide not only what to do about the government's request, but whether to hold discussions about it open court or not.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 5h5 hours ago
The prosecutors in the Chapo have used sealed memos and secret letters to the judge over and over again. Many of their legal arguments concerning their witnesses and the evidence they have remain out of public view. The level of secrecy has been remarkable for months.

Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 4h4 hours ago
This notice has appeared all too often in the El Chapo case. We may—or may not—find out later today what this sealed memo is about.

Day 5 of the El Chapo trial just getting underway. Already there's some legal drama this morning. Prosecutors filed a sealed motion last night to preclude cross-examination of witnesses about certain topics. They don't want their witnesses to asked about certain unknown things.

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 54m54 minutes ago
Given the revelations about bribes to Mexican presidents — which haven't yet been mentioned in open court — you have to wonder what the prosecution wants to keep secret. Reporters @alanfeuer @Emily_Saul_ & @jriley8832 sent a letter to the judge this morning urging transparency.

Here's Judge Cogan's heavily redacted ruling on the government's motion to preclude cross-examination. He grants the request to block El Chapo's lawyers from questioning of El Rey Zambada about a bribe and his "unorthodox interests." https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/5204073-Judge-Cogan-ruling-on-government-motion-to.html …

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 49m49 minutes ago
Judge Cogan's ruling mentions the "inflammatory nature of this evidence." This appears to be literal — one thing the government wants to suppress is something related to an arson.

DsdC2-yVYAAJGb-.jpg

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 46m46 minutes ago
There's also a reference to a bribe that El Rey paid, which was $10,000 to an unknown person. Cogan says the identity of whoever received the bribe "makes it prejudicial in a way that the other examples of CW1 bribing a public official are not."

DsdDj1tUwAAvSBb.jpg

Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 42m42 minutes ago
Judge Cogan makes an intriguing reference to El Rey's "unorthodox interests" and "unusual beliefs or views." He ruled that they're not relevant. The defense argued these unknown views “clearly suggest mental illness . . . or at the very least, that [CW1] is delusional.”
