Update for those who can't access: not much new except they are saying they are going there again and that there will be a presser later in the day. The family are upset this morning because they still haven't been contacted and think they should have been told about new remains being found before it was released to the media (words to that effect). Sorry to paraphrase - but not critical info at this point.

If it is Shannan, I wouldn't be surprised if they ID'd her today based on the unique dental work they talked about previously. I noticed that her family didn't seem to know about the search yesterday (based on her FB prayer page), someone should have prepared them...it seems insensitive to have them find out by people posting it on FB. Also, if anyone hears anything about the press conference, post it here please. I check WS more than I check news sites. I trust us more :)

Also, is anyone else a little alarmed by the fact that they found remains within hours of resuming their search-- I just read that they started the search at around 4pm yesterday afternoon so it's not even like they were searching all day. How did they miss that body during the last searches? I distinctly remember LE saying they searched thoroughly in Dec/Jan and did not believe any more bodies were in that area. Maybe the dogs are just more effective in the warmer weather with all the snow melted-- I hope this is not an indication of more to come.

I can read Newsday online from work, thankfully. This article contains several interesting points. The remains that were found last night were found by an officer without a dog. The specific area has been searched repeatedly before. That's really interesting. You don't think he made this dump after the investigation took off in Dec? Seems very risky. This is crazy.

If the body was dumped since Dec/Jan, then wouldn't the cold weather have kept it from decomp'ing allot? Yet, they said the remains hadn't been id'ed as human yet. Maybe these remains were scattered and he only found a few bones. I'm puzzled as well.

And they haven't even spoken with Shannan's family!!!??? Hopefully there will be more info soon.

One thing seems to be consistent if it's true is the words Human Remains not Body. Again it's hard to know what to believe from the Press Vultures.
I will say CH 4 this Morning kept saying Escorts not Prostitutes. I thought that sounded a little better. I'd hate to be a Family who is missing someone now. The word Humility comes to my mind! Anyone could know someone in that situation or be in it.

Maybe he moved the body from somewhere else so they would find it there. I don't know why he would do that, I'm just very surprised they didn't find anything last time and this discovery was made only a few hours after they started the search yesterday by an officer seeing the remains, not even by a dog sniffing them out.

They aren't definitively saying the remains are human but I'm under the impression that the investigators have told reporters they believe them to be human... unlike a few months ago when they found a spinal cord on Gilgo and it was barely even reported on because they didn't think it was human. More information is definitely on it's way, guess we just have to be patient.

Municipal worker? Dennis Rader was a municipal worker. UGH!

The person who dumped these bodies along this hwy felt comfortable doing so, IMO.

One possibility is that melting snow, wind, or the general thawing of spring moved portions of the remains into visibility, where they weren't before. For instance if they had been under rubbish or something like that.

Really good point, carbuff. This winter has been rough and LI has gotten several huge storms. Vulnerable terrain like that would probably shift/change a lot in those conditions.

I got to put this out when the first bodies were found there was comment (I think Topix)

But it gave me the creeps. it said "just think of how many more bodies will be found by summer" that comment really gave me chills. That was the only post that posters made.

Interesting also on Erin facebook a retired LE also feel there be more bodies!

My guess is they missed it the first time. Not for lack of trying. The Terrain is so bad in the Cold. It's just not Humanly possible to be out there for any length of time when the Temp is below Freezing. The City was 37 degrees this morning out on LI it was 27 plus the wind. I don't know if the Cold helps preserve as much as the Salt degrades. The other thing is the Killers spot was found in DEC, which I think would keep him away for fear of getting caught. Who knows how a sicko thinks?

WM, I haven't found a map yet but some of the papers are reporting that the remains were found a half a mile east of the first dump area, on Cedar Beach-- near Oak Beach. As always, we can't fully trust the initial media reports as they seem to often get the details wrong.

The killer is clearly very comfortable in that area. I hope this is the last victim. Will be keeping a close eye on the news reports today.

Wonder if that means there's another one in between there - the initial 4 were all 1/4 apart. I'll betcha.

this is so true! it's also common for le to wait until better weather to do searches, as we aren't looking for live victims here.

now that the conditions have thawed (despite another nor eastern on the way)
i really am praying that even if this 5th victim is shannon, that le keeps searching. elena lozada is still missing and fits the killer's profile of victims.

i can't help feeling that elena lozada and her family have kinda been sweep under the rug during all this..

this would be really interesting as it seems to fit his pattern, similiar to the atlantic city killer who also spaced his victims out.

what also will be interesting is whether or not the 5th had the burlap.

according to this article, it states the 5th remains were found after a day long search using dogs and helicopters:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/03/30/possible-fifth-body-long-island-beach/

le is working on iding the remains. even if for example, say the remains have metal and they think it's shannon; i think that they want to be certain by testing with dna. since it's remains, the body has had time to decompose, so it would fit the time period of when shannon went missing last year in may. even the summer months alone can help decomp.

hopefully the nor eastern doesn't get in the way of their search planned for next week. we just can't get an early spring here...

what's odd is that the killer seems to dump all of his victims in the same area, makes me wonder if he actually knows of other dump spots and can access them, and why doesn't he dump there? like rifkin said, he dumped his 100 of miles away, 3 haven't been found. this guy likes to line his up in a row.

as tfrohning posted about the topix comment, someone mentioning "just think how many more bodies will be found by summer" while it is a scary thought, it's likely possible that more bodies will be found, maybe ones we aren't even aware of.
the serial killer has lined up 4 victims, the 5th being found nearby 1.2 mile away from the 4. it's anyone's guess as to when or how long he's been killing.

the remains that have been found are just that- remains, so it's not like it's a fresh body for le to get a ton of evidence off of.

what i found interesting is he has no victims that we know of in 2008.

"You never know," said Lori Grove of Williamsburg, Pa., Gilbert's aunt. "This may be the fifth one or it could be Shannan. We just want to find her and bring her home."

It seems like the family believes that the serial killer case and Shannan's case are 2 different cases and unrelated. Which got me thinking...

The 4 identified women and Shannan were all escorts, YES.
But it seems like the 4 women that were found met a client who turned out to be the killer. Shannan met her client, and left her client, and something happened after the fact. She was last seen AROUND the area that 4 were found. That's almost like opposite. The serial killer is thought to have killed elsewhere, and then dumped the bodies on the road. If someone were to kill Shannan, why leave her body right where she was last seen, and making a scene?

I wonder how long it will take them to ID this body.

Did anyone find an updated map with the 5th body?

I totally think they got a tip. There have been 3 other great days in our recent past when they could have looked. They figured something out, and the media reported it as a search for more remains because LE must have said they were searching for specific human remains. We'll wait and see!

When they found the first 4 bodies, didn't they rule out Shannan fairly quickly when they learned about the metal implant? I remember it being within the week.

The video here, says the family will have to wait weeks to months for results. Does that mean there is a piece of metal there and they just need to prove it with the tests?

Ugh..it's so frustrating..I keep going back and forth with thoughts.
