The family of Megan Waterman, the 22-year-old woman who disappeared on June 6 on Long Island, is hoping to be able to offer a $5,000 reward by next week in hopes someone will come forward with new information that will help police find the missing mother.

Cynthia Caron has helped host other benefit dinners for missing people, but has never seen a response quite like the one that a missing Scarborough woman received Saturday.

“So many family members helped out as well as local businesses in the community,” Caron said. “It was amazing we were able to pull this off in six weeks.”

Det. Donald Blatchford of the Scarborough, Maine, police said he had talked with Suffolk police Monday and was expecting to hear if one of the bodies was that of Scarborough resident Megan Waterman, 22, who was last seen at a Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge on June 6.

The area where the bodies were found "is close enough to be of interest," Blatchford said.

Blatchford said he has been in regular contact with Suffolk authorities since Waterman disappeared. She and her boyfriend had traveled from Scarborough to Long Island after placing an ad for an escort on Craigslist.

Blatchford said Suffolk police already have DNA evidence in the Waterman case from belongings left behind in the Hauppauge hotel.

Blatchford said he hasn't received any indication from Suffolk police that Waterman may be among the victims found on the beach.

ELIZABETH Meserve has set two Google alerts.

One is for the name Megan Waterman, her 22-year-old niece from Maine who went missing in June in Hauppauge.

The other alert is for "bodies discovered on Long Island."

Tuesday, Meserve got one of her alerts: Police on Long Island had found the bodies of four women in brush along Ocean Parkway in the Town of Babylon. They are investigating whether any of the bodies are of Waterman, or Shannan Gilbert, of Jersey City, N.J., who was last seen May 1.

Long Island police and FBI agents yesterday swarmed an oceanfront home where a missing prostitute was last seen alive as they ramped up their investigation of four corpses mysteriously dumped on a nearby secluded beach.
......................
Meanwhile, Lorraine Ela, mother of another possible prostitute victim, Megan Waterman, submitted a DNA sample to help investigation determine if one of the bodies is that of her daughter. She also implored her daughter's imprisoned pimp to talk.

"He knows what happened to her," she told The Post from her home in Scarborough, Maine.

Six months ago, when Megan Waterman left a Hauppauge hotel and never came back in June, her disappearance barely made news. Hardly anyone on Long Island knew her name.

Now that four bodies were found on Ocean Parkway in a quaint, beautiful beachside community and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer has said those bodies may be the work of a serial killer—and that they were found while police were searching for another missing prostitute, Shannon Gilbert, who received even less media attention than Waterman when she disappeared back in May—Waterman’s and Gilbert’s names are suddenly everywhere you look.

A year ago, Megan Waterman was living a typical small-town life in Scarborough, Maine, working two minimum-wage jobs at local sandwich shops and trying as best she could to take care of her young daughter.

Then one night, the 22-year-old met a persuasive man from Brooklyn at a Maine nightclub, her mother Lorraine Ela says.

The two began dating and the new boyfriend eventually convinced Ms. Waterman that there was easy money to be made prostituting herself as an escort, Ms. Ela says.

On Wednesday, officials were attempting to determine if one of the four female skeletal remains found off the beaches near the town of Babylon was Ms. Waterman. Police suspect the four women may be victims of a serial killer.

Benefit aims to spotlight missing case

Friends and family of a missing Scarborough woman are hoping that a roller-skating event this month will draw attention to her case and raise additional money for a reward.

The fundraiser is also planned as a celebration of Megan Waterman's 23rd birthday.

Waterman has been missing since early June, when she went to New York's Long Island with her boyfriend. Her family is still awaiting results of DNA testing on four bodies that were found on a remote beach there last month. They fear that Waterman, who advertised as an escort on Craigslist, may have been a victim of human trafficking.

At a news conference Wednesday at police headquarters in Yaphank, authorities said the remains of Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine, had been positively identified by the New York City medical examiner.

"We're certainly not going to discuss the manner of death," he said.

Dormer and Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota said officials were also close to identifying the remains of the other three skeletons found in December near Gilgo Beach.
