Akayed Ullah: NYC explosion suspect identified as 27-year-old Brooklyn man
by Tom Winter, Jonathan Dienst and Tracy Connor

The suspect in a terror-related attack in New York City has been identified as Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant who lives in Brooklyn.

The former taxi driver — who had the device affixed to his body by Velcro and zip ties, according to police — was taken to Bellevue Hospital...

I am so thankful to God that the terrorist's bomb went off prematurely. It chills me to the bone to think of the massive injuries/casualties that could have been sustained if it had fully detonated in a closed confined space.

I am so afraid........there will be more..........there will be more both here on our soil and in Europe. :(

It sickness me how these terrorists' ideology of hate want to and can do so much mayhem and destruction to totally innocent people.

I am also very thankful our military has made great strides this year in wiping out ISIS strongholds and other terrorists on foreign soil. The more that is killed abroad in mass it leaves less of them to plan and plot to carryout attacks here and in Europe.

Yes, of course we will still have lone wolves to deal with but I think all LE agencies are getting better and better at stopping multiple terrorist attacks before they could happen. Now the FBI alone has over 1000 open cases on Islamic terrorists. I am sure others are on the radar of state and local LEs in our nation.

In the past few months I have read about several terrorists being stopped here from carrying out their deadly plots..with many of them getting long prison sentences. Thank goodness hundreds over the past few years have been stopped before they could act.

War has been declared against us and any country in the free world by these Islamic hate mongering fanatics and they all should be treated as enemy combatants... for that is exactly what they are ....no matter if they are from here or elsewhere.

One thing I have noticed about these Islamic terrorists who plan and plot to kill as many of us as they can and that is they will wait years to do so ............so they can blend in with our society.

Yet, all along, they secretly are/were planning out their deadly acts against us. It just makes common sense that more right at this moment are also hidden behind walls while secretly planning other attacks against us.

I would like to know what ties he has to any Imam or Mosque and if it is the same one as the other terrorist who recently killed 8 innocent people in NYC?

IMO

At least your government will deal harshly with them if they survive - the death penalty or LWP.

Here in the UK his Yuman Rites would be considered more important than those of the rest of us, and leftist lawyers and spokespersons would be queuing up to make excuses for him and blaming British society for his alienation.

Wonder if his family will be deported?

ISIS competes and overlaps with AQ, other jihadi groups and the Moslem Brotherhood for young recruits in Bangladesh and elsewhere, in messaging and for operational sustenance, as well as to demonstrate reach, at any given time now, in any given space, it seems to me.

Though their ideology, ideologues and leaders are increasingly defunct or laid bare, it seems, the business model of sustaining their causes always needs new cannon fodder, young recruits.

I think the age of the attacker may be an indication of a broader support network staying as distant as possible.

Omar Mateen and the flake who failed in Chelsea and on the Jersey shore were married, this creep is younger, maybe no wife and kids?

Thus, what happened 2015 when the taxi lic. expired? Is that connected to distancing?

This incident, whether there's the intel to consider links or not, is pepping their current and for new recruits, whatever peripheral issues at the time. They may be switching it up from attacks that cause widespread condemnation, retaliation and fortification against them to smaller scale very soft target attacks here and in Europe because they are building capacity, network and creds, possibly.

Poking to see what's on the radar or not too, maybe?

As such, Oceanblueeyes, I feel the same as you and you're right. Thank goodness so few were hurt.

It can be kinda hard to get a green card here. It takes a good length of time.

These attackers spend a lot of time "blending in".

When will it stop :(

Soon after the explosion, police descended on at least three Brooklyn addresses connected to Ullah or his relatives — two in the Kensington section and one in Old Mill Basin.

A former Mill Basin neighborhood said the suspect lived there with his parents and two older brothers. She said she would see him leaving the house with camera equipment and assumed he was on his way to work.

"The family is very friendly, very nice, but he was quiet. Never talked to anyone, stayed to himself," the neighbor said.

He could have been taking pictures that he shared with others now here in the states and there could be more explosions, MOO

Law enforcement officials say the 27-year-old man who set off a pipe bomb in the New York City subway came to the U.S. from Bangladesh seven years ago with a type of preferential visa for people with relatives who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

The officials say Akayed Ullah was living in Brooklyn. They say he told investigators Monday he was inspired by the Islamic State group to carry out an attack, but had no direct contact with the terror group. They say he is speaking with investigators from his hospital bed. The suspect had burns on his abdomen and also to his hands

Officials say he assembled the crude device in his apartment. Investigators are talking to witnesses and his family.

Immediately following the explosion, an MTA cleaner could be seen on surveillance video holding a dustpan and picking up two items off the ground while the bomber was lying in the empty corridor before the scene was locked down, a source said.

"A thorough background investigation of the suspect is being conducted by the joint terrorism task force," the commissioner said.

He added that the attack was captured on transit system video cameras and the department is reviewing the video and interviewing witnesses.

Police say the suspect, who is now in custody, was wearing an improvised low-tech explosive device.

He intentionally set off the device, according to the NYPD. Police officials say he made statements before setting off the device.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the threat to New Yorkers related to the explosion is over.

"It's very important for my fellow New Yorkers to know that there are no additional incidents that we know about and there are no additional activities," de Blasio said. "What we know now is that this was one individual who, thank God, was unsuccessful."

New York's governor says the suspect in a pipe bomb blast in New York City's subway system may have crafted the device from online instructions, and so far it doesn't appear to be part of a larger plot.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo told cable news channel NY1 that officials "have reason to believe that this person went to the internet and found out how to make a homemade bomb."

-- Ullah held a New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission for-hire vehicle driver's license from March 2012 through March 2015, NYC TLC Deputy Commissioner for Public Affairs Allan J. Fromberg said in a statement to CNN.

"As taxi and for-hire vehicle drivers are independent contractors and not employees, I have no way of knowing whether he drove for any particular base, or whether he simply got the license but didn't drive at all," Fromberg said. "That said, since he held an FHV license, if in fact he did drive, we do know that it could not have been a yellow taxi."

Thank you, EM. Not as young as I thought, 27

Had a livery driver's license, but didn't drive a yellow cab:

"Ullah had a livery driver’s license between March 2012 and March 2015, which he allowed to expire, a Taxi and Limousine Commission spokesman said. The agency clarified that Ullah never had a license that allowed him to drive a yellow cab."
