Five years have passed since a Manhattan grand jury indicted Anya Johnston, now 29, for the stabbing murder of advertising copywriter Susan Trott, 70, Johnston’s downstairs neighbor at 710 West End Avenue.

Johnston’s trial, set to begin in mid-October, was delayed after her defense attorney Jeremy Scheider filed some additional evidence: written notes from an Upper West Side neuropsychologist, according to court documents and a recent hearing. Those notes must be reviewed by prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, and a new trial date is expected to be set at a hearing November 9th.

The delay appears to be tied to Schneider’s pursuit of a “psychiatric defense” for Johnston. In conversations with WSR, attorney Schneider has described Johnston as having an “extensive mental health history, going back probably 20 years.”

Those notes must be reviewed by prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, and a new trial date is expected to be set at a hearing November 9th.

The delay appears to be tied to Schneider’s pursuit of a “psychiatric defense” for Johnston. In conversations with WSR, attorney Schneider has described Johnston as having an “extensive mental health history, going back probably 20 years.”

I am so aggrieved on behalf of the deceased woman’s friends and family about the never-ending requests from Johnston’s defense to delay this trial. At this point, 5 years after she committed a senseless murder of an innocent neighbor, the defense NOW produces documents that allege AJ has an extensive history of mental health problems and which require additional postponement of the trial? He made this claim in 2019, too, as seen in this article: New Details Emerge in Susan Trott Murder Case; Purported Weapon Discussed in Court
But we are supposed to believe that the documents substantiating that claim somehow weren’t available before now?

IMO only but I suspect that AJ’s family has shelled out beaucoup bucks for a high-powered criminal defense lawyer to represent her (he is named as Jeremy Schneider, and does not appear to be a public defender), and the repeated delay
-and-stall tactics he has deployed in Johnstone’s defense are his way of earning his fees (though, considering AJ is being held in the women’s “general population“ at Rikers Island until the trial commences, maybe these delay tactics are actually imposing on AJ a worse punishment than she might receive after her trial).
