Search under way for missing hunter

Volunteers and forest rangers are searching the Eastern High Peaks this morning for Lake Placid resident Russ Beede, a 63-year-old hunter who is believed to have walked into the woods off the Adirondack Loj Road Saturday morning.

This is the second major search in the area for a local resident in just over a year. On Nov. 20, 2010, 22-year-old Saranac Lake resident Wesley A. Wamsganz went hiking alone in the Adirondack Loj area after working the dayshift at the Downtown Diner in Lake Placid. An intense search that lasted eight days turned up few clues about Wamsganz's disappearance. He was last seen at Marcy Dam the evening he disappeared. His belt and jacket were later found, but searchers were unable to locate him.

As for Wes...there's been nothing in the media about him for age's and it's sad his missing page on FB has less that 500 likes

But, reading back over old reports linked above I thot this odd about the discovery of his jacket:

snipped..."The guy who found it said it was really delicately placed (on the ground in the middle of the trail) ... like an offering," Siena said. Winchell said he couldn't confirm this detail, but Siena said she heard it from a hiker who had seen the jacket and thought it looked strange.

I think about this young man often when I'm hiking here, but realize the unlikely chance he will be found. Hurricane Irene did a number on the area in 2011, breaching Marcy Dam and wreaking destruction all over the area. Depending on the trail he chose, his remains could have easily been scattered or washed to an even more-concealed spot. I hope his family has found peace in the intervening years since he disappeared.
