Pike County murders: Alaska pastor says Ohio family of interest attended church Sunday


Kelly Cinereski, pastor at Resurrection Bay Baptist Church in Seward, Alaska, told the Daily News the Wagner family attended his son’s church Sunday a couple hours west in Kenai. The pastor has not seen them personally during their latest trip to the state, but said the family brought trailers.


Cinereski said he believes the Wagners are moving to the area — located a winding three-hour trip southwest of Anchorage — something they have been planning to do much of the decade-plus he has known them since he headed a church in Minford, Ohio. Over the past 11 years, the Wagners have come up three times to visit and fish.


“When our boys were little, our boys were friends,” said Cinereski, who officiated George Jr.’s wedding. “They’re just good country people.”

Ohio AG has ‘laser focus’ on family living in Kenai

It was children’s toys in the yard that prompted Brad Conklin of Kenai to stop Monday and meet his new neighbors.

“I stopped in to say that we have bear around here so keep a gun handy, and they said all they have was a little shotgun,” said Conklin.

“We’re not using any term to describe these four people, we’re not calling them suspects… but, I would say that we are focused on them at this point like a laser,” said DeWine in a phone interview with KTVA Tuesday.

2012 – AG DeWine issued press release announcing LE had discovered “a major marijuana grow site” in Pike County with suspected ties to a Mexican drug cartel. During the discovery, 1200 plants were destroyed by investigators and two abandoned campsites were located, which they believe had belonged to Mexican nationals.

Two years after the eight-person massacre in Pike County, investigators are providing fewer details than ever before in the case, marking the second anniversary without the lengthy, emotional press conference and plea for tips that highlighted the first.

The unsolved murders took place April 22, 2016.

This week the three sites where members of the Rhoden and Gilley families were killed appeared unchanged from the early days of the investigation. As if frozen in time, toys, trash, appliances and abandoned vehicles remain spread about the properties and front porches of trailers that are no longer there - having been hauled away and stored as part of the investigation.

On the second anniversary of the Rhoden family massacre: 'I still got a lot of hate'

Leonard Manley didn't attend the balloon release. Instead, he sat at his home on Union Hill Road with the intent of confronting any BCI agents that came to his property.

A year ago, Manley was already skeptical of law enforcement's progress in investigating the death of his family members, but that skepticism turned to anger when police obtained a warrant and then placed a GPS tracking device on his son's truck the day of the first anniversary.

"Fool me once," Manley said.

James Manley removed the tracker from his truck when he found it on April 28. He was arrested and jailed for a day on evidence tampering and vandalism. Authorities dropped the charges.

Leonard Manley isn't shy about talking about what happened and what's followed in the two years since. He remains angry about the police's examination of his family, which also included two lie-detector tests of Bobby Jo that she says she passed.

He's also not ready to let go of the pain and vengeance he feels, though he's had help.

"Phil (Fulton) has really helped me. I still got a lot of hate, but he took a lot of that hate out of me," Leonard Manley said.

Manley remains convinced someone close to his family killed them.
