CANTON - Two people have been charged after a 3-year-old girl died in her home Friday morning.

The child's father 22-year-old Matthew Miku was charged with murder and child endangering. His live-in girlfriend, 21-year-old Jessica Bender was charged with child endangering.

Miku's bond was set at $1 million, while Bender's was set at $250,000.

Miku frantically called 911 to say this three-year old daughter was not breathing. When help arrived, paramedics found Hailey Miku already deceased. The coroner ruled her death a homicide.

Just after 11 a.m. Friday, Canton police responded to a home on Dewalt Avenue, NW

During the 911 call, Matthew Miku told the dispatcher that the girl had fallen down some stairs a week before.

"The child had sustained severe blunt force trauma and it was clear just by sight that this child had suffered something pretty traumatic, and when the coroner arrived and began examining the body, we just kept finding more and more injuries to the child," said Canton Police Captain Jack Angelo.

Mathew Miku is being held on $1 million bond. Police said the pair have no prior criminal history.

A 5-year-old living in the house was also taken into custody by Child Protective Services. The child is not a sibling of the 3-year-old and police said he did not have any apparent injuries.

This is another horrible case of a child that did not deserve this. I am heartbroken for this precio1us little girl. It sounds like she has a lot of trauma to her body, old and new.

For some reason the sound file of the 911 call wouldn't open for me. Here's another link in case anyone else has the same problem:

It's worth listening to the call; dad's way over the top upset and keeps (literally) howling and repeating that his daughter is dead. IOW he's acting pretty much in the opposite way most parents would in an emergency call. In fact, the first thing he says is "Please. Aahh, aahh, my daughter's dead." Not that she's not moving or not breathing, but rather she's dead. Creepy.

A police detective described in chilling detail how Mathew N. Miku confessed to beating his 3-year-old daughter so severely she died from the injuries.

Miku said that "voices" in his head told him to keep hitting the toddler, and he couldn't stop, according to testimony from Detective Joe Mongold during a preliminary hearing in Canton Municipal Court Monday afternoon. The 22-year-old Miku often confined his daughter to a room in an effort to protect her from his chronic abuse, the detective said under questioning from city Prosecutor Ty Hauritz.

"He advised it was his actions that killed Hailey," Mangold testified. Miku said "he needed help and just couldn't stop beating her."

Miku is charged with murder and child endangering. After hearing Mongold describe the injuries Miku had inflicted on Hailey, including to the face, head and body, Judge John Poulos ruled there was enough evidence to send the case to a Stark County grand jury. Miku had made the incriminating statements during a police interview that lasted between 90 minutes and two hours, Mongold said.

CANTON Jessica Bender looked at the small belt held in front of her.

She said it was used by her boyfriend Mathew Miku to whip his 3-year-old daughter, Hailey.

She was then shown a long plastic kitchen spoon. Miku also used it to hit his daughter, Bender said.

County prosecutors introduced the items as evidence when Bender took the stand Tuesday, a key witness in Miku's trial on murder and child endangering charges. Trial testimony began Monday in Stark County Common Pleas Court before Judge Chryssa Hartnett.

Jurors also heard from Miku himself during Tuesday's testimony. A taped interview between Miku and Canton Police Det. Joseph Mongold was introduced as evidence and played when Mongold testified.

During the interview that lasted about two hours Miku went from talking about trying to help his sick and injured daughter to acknowledging he caused her death.

"I killed my daughter. I cannot believe this," Miku told Mongold midway through the interview.

Initially Miku blamed Hailey's injuries on two falls, one during the week prior to her death and as second the day before. But as the interview progressed Miku admitted to sometimes hitting his daughter and said he had struck her rather hard on the left side of her head with an open hand the week before.

"I know what I did was wrong," Miku said toward the end of the interview, adding that he should walked away and not hurt his daughter.

Assistant County Coroner Renee Robinson followed Mongold and testified about the injuries Hailey suffered. She ruled that little girl died because of acute and chronic trauma and neglect.

Photographs from Hailey's autopsy showed the girl had abrasions and bruises all over her body. There was a serious injury to the left side of her head and ear. In response to questions from Assistant Prosecutor Fred Scott, Robinson repeatedly said Hailey's injuries weren't caused by a fall.

An internal exam indicated the girl was battling several problems and likely should have been hospitalized, Robinson said. Other tests indicated that she had not received pain killers or other treatment for her injuries.

Witness to abuse

Bender detailed her relationship with Miku during 2015 and early 2016. She said she witnessed Hailey getting whipped, Miku using his knuckles on her, Miku picking the child up by her head and withholding food and drink as discipline.

"It had been going on but it was progressively getting worse," Bender told jurors.

Hailey Miku was found dead on March 4, 2016, inside the couple's apartment on Dewalt Avenue NW.
