Alleged serial killer pleads not guilty to 1992 murder

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Samuel Legg, the Arizona man who Ohio Attorney General calls a "serial killer," was arraigned Tuesday in a Mahoning County court on murder charges for the 1992 slaying of Sharon Lynn Kedzierski.

Legg is charged with three counts of aggravated murder and one count of murder. He pleaded not guilty to all four counts.

Legg is currently being held in jail without bond. His jury trial is scheduled to start on April 29.

Medina County rape suspect linked to multiple murders in Ohio, Illinois

The Ohio Attorney General's Office said Thursday it did not have an update on the status of the investigation.

Legg was scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a hearing to determine his psychological competency to stand trial, but that hearing was pushed back, pending the results of a psychiatric evaluation.

Competency hearing held for accused serial killer, rapist Samuel Legg

"MEDINA — Accused serial killer and rapist Samuel Legg III, who is facing charges in Medina, possibly in Elyria and in Youngstown, was ordered to undergo further psychological treatment in hopes he could one day stand trial.

Judge Joyce V. Kimbler said Friday at a competency hearing she wants to find out if Legg can assist in his own defense....

After four months, Legg is expected to return to court to determine if he can stand trial in the rape of a 17-year-old girl on Sept. 7, 1997....

He said he was not surprised by the judge’s ruling, although he argued that he believed Legg is competent to stand trial.

“He will be back in court in September to determine competency,” Thompson said....

Legg is being asked to take another competency evaluation in Mahoning County."

Samuel Legg III ordered to undergo psychological treatment

MEDINA, Ohio — Samuel Legg III, an Arizona man who has been extradited back to Northeast Ohio to face charges in connection with a rape from 1997, was ordered to undergo further psychological treatment at his competency hearing Friday morning. An independent psychologist determined Legg, who has also been linked to four homicides in the 1990s, had not responded well to prescription medication and remains psychotic.

After his competency evaluation, the court adopted a doctor's recommendation for Legg to undergo psychological treatment at Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare for a period not to exceed four months.

This won’t be Legg’s only competency evaluation.

The judge presiding over Legg’s murder trial in Mahoning County also ordered that he undergo an evaluation, which has not yet been completed. The results of that evaluation can and likely will be used in the Medina County rape case proceedings, Thompson said.

So - guess his trial won't be starting on 5/28..... for this case.

Judge rules trucker incompetent for trial in Austintown cold murder case

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

The Arizona trucker has been declared incompetent to stand trial for a 1992 cold case murder in Austintown, at least for now.

Relying on mental evaluation reports from two doctors, Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge John Durkin ordered that 49-year-old Samuel Legg III undergo treatment at the Twin Valley Behavioral Health Center for the next four months, after which time Legg will be re-evaluated.

Legg faces charges of aggravated murder, aggravated murder during the commission of a felony (rape), aggravated murder during a felony (robbery), and murder.

Legg previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Legg was charged in February in the 1992 murder of Sharon Lynn Kedzierski.
