The remains of three people missing in Knox County for more than a week were found Thursday in garbage bags that were hidden inside of a hollow tree.

DQ worker,friend breaks silence on Knox Co. deaths
The woman who, according to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, first laid eyes on a bloody scene at Tina Herrmann's home is breaking her silence.
"We are just devastated; it's been a pretty rough day," Valerie Haythorn told ABC6/FOX28 News' Steve Levine. Haythorn worked with Herrmann at a Dairy Queen on Coshocton Avenue in Mount Vernon.

A coroner released new information on Saturday into the deaths of two women and a boy, whose remains were discovered earlier this week in a hollow tree in rural Knox County.
A preliminary report from Knox County Coroner Jennifer Ogle said that Tina Herrmann, 32; her son, Kody Maynard, 11; and family friend Stephanie Sprang, 41, each died on Nov. 10 of multiple stab wounds to the chest and back. Each victim was dismembered after being killed, the report said.
There were no signs of sexual assault.

Murder suspect was long 'on a bad path'
In the days ahead of his 30th birthday, not much was going right in Matthew J. Hoffman's already troubled life.
He and his girlfriend, who accused him of choking her during an argument at his home on Oct. 24, had broken up. She feared she might die.
A few days later, he lost his part-time tree-trimming job at Fast Eddy's after creeping out his supervisor and overselling his experience.
Money was a constant concern. Besides the bills accompanying day-to-day life, he owed $2 million in restitution for setting fire to a condominium complex in Colorado.

Vigil held in Reynoldsburg for Knox Co. family
Saturday night at Reynoldsburg High School, nearly 50 miles from where a child and two women were murdered, and another child bound and gagged in a basement, nearly 100 people came out to just be together and to think of their friend.

The father of Kody Maynard, the 11 year old boy who was killed last week, is the son of Larry Maynard, a 1997 graduate of Reynoldsburg, High School.
"Larry was a great friend of mine,” said Becky Lucas.” I grew up with him, spent every single day in high school with him and this to happen is just heart breaking."

Autopsy report gives details into deaths
According to the preliminary autopsy report released Saturday by Knox County Coroner Dr. Jennifer Ogle, the deaths of Stephanie Sprang, 41, Tina Herrmann, 32, and Kody Maynard, 11, were caused by multiple stab wounds to their chests and backs. Ogle reported the three were killed on Nov. 10. Knox County Sheriff David Barber said last week the three were killed at Herrmann’s Apple Valley home.

Fire Marshall: No connection with Hoffman
Matthew Hoffman remains on suicide watch at the Knox County Jail today where he is being held on a $1 million cash bond. Charged last week with the kidnapping of 13-year-old Sarah Maynard, Hoffman is scheduled to appear for his preliminary hearing on that charge in front of Mount Vernon Municipal Court Judge Paul Spurgeon, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30.
A convicted arsonist, Hoffman served seven years in a Colorado prison for setting fire to a condominium complex in 2000.
According to the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office, there is no indication of any connection between Hoffman and any fires in central Ohio.

Fire Confirmed, suspicious at Knox Co. victims home
A fire Monday night at the front porch of the home where two women and a boy were killed almost two weeks ago is being called suspicious, ABC6/FOX28 News' Tom Bosco reports.
Danville Fire Chief Woody Ball confirmed the fire, saying fire fighters arrived at the home a little after 11 p.m. Monday. They quickly put out the fire, wrapping up their efforts by 12:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Malek: Hoffman co-operative
Knox County Public Defender Bruce Malek, currently the attorney of record for alleged kidnapper Matthew Hoffman, told the News he did not see a need for Tuesday’s scheduled preliminary hearing regarding the kidnapping charge.
“It comes down to an issue of probable cause,” said Malek on the decision to waive the hearing. “Under these circumstances, we didn’t feel there was any reason to go forward with a hearing. We would have expected the prosecutor to put forth minimal evidence.”
The purpose of the hearing was to determine if the prosecution has ample evidence to continue holding Hoffman in the Knox County Jail under the $1 million bond set forth by Mount Vernon Municipal Court Judge Paul Spurgeon on Nov. 16. Preliminary hearings are held when cases have not yet been taken to the grand jury for an indictment.

Little is being said about how the fire was started, according to Division of State Fire Marshal spokesman Shane Cartmil. The agency also didn’t comment Wednesday on who may have set the fire at the home in the 400 block of King Beach Drive.

A tearful goodbye for Knox Co. victims
Two lines of mourners visited two families yesterday to pay respects to the three victims of a heinous homicide case.
In Gahanna, 13-year-old Sarah Maynard, the sole survivor of a seemingly random kidnapping that took the lives of her mother and brother, received hugs at Peace Lutheran Church.
Mourners joined her to say goodbye to Tina Herrmann, 32, and 11-year-old Kody Maynard.
The two will be buried together today in Reynoldsburg.

FBI receiving inquiries about Hoffman
Since the arrest of Matthew Hoffman on kidnapping charges last week, FBI agent Harry Trombitas, who aided the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in the case, has received several inquiries about Hoffman.
“I have gotten a call or two,” Trombitas said. “One was from in state and one from out of state. It’s not so much that they suspected Hoffman was involved in their homicides but if we would develop any information that he might be involved in anything else to keep them in mind.”

Horrific killings raise perplexing issue of evil
Many people, upon hearing about the horrific violence inflicted on two Knox County women and an 11-year-old boy, have asked the simple, but perhaps unanswerable, question: How could anyone do this?
Each detail about the deaths of Stephanie Sprang, Tina Herrmann and Herrmann's son, Kody Maynard, was more awful than the last. Their killer not only stabbed them to death, but also dismembered them and stashed their bodies in a hollow tree.
The police could explain the chain of events, and the coroner could provide the autopsy reports. But no one could answer the real question on everyone's mind:
How could anyone be so evil?

The suspect in the abduction of a Knox County girl last year is now facing aggravated murder and rape charges.

According to Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher, a grand jury returned a ten-count indictment against 30-year-old Matthew Hoffman.

The indictment alleges that Hoffman forced the girl to engage in sexual conduct with him once at his home on Columbus Road in Mount Vernon.:furious:

Ohioan pleads guilty in deaths of 3 found in tree
An unemployed tree-cutter pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated murder and other charges in the deaths of three people whose dismembered bodies were found in a hollow tree and the rape of a 13-year-old girl.
Matthew Hoffman, 30, entered the plea to 10 counts, including aggravated murder, burglary, kidnapping, rape, and prosecutors recommended a sentence of life without parole.

Only one other burglary linked to Hoffman
On Oct. 13, 2010, John Nussbaum returned home to find his garage had been burglarized.
“I don’t remember everything that was taken,” Nussbaum told the News. “My golf clubs were taken. And some of my deer hunting stuff — my bow and my deer stand were taken. There were some personal items taken from the house, some silver and sports memorabilia.”
Nussbaum’s stolen property was recovered almost exactly a month later when the Knox County Sheriff’s Office raided the home of Matthew Hoffman on Columbus Road as part of the then Apple Valley missing persons investigation.
Although Hoffman was charged with aggravated burglary in Tina Herrmann’s residence at 481 King Beach Drive, the Nussbaum burglary was not included in the indictments.
