Judge must decide if woman charged in Mahoning Co. murder case should go back to jail


YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Should a woman charged in connection with a gruesome murder case from two years ago be put back in jail for talking with another of her co-defendants? That’s one of the decisions facing a Mahoning County judge.

Even though Katrina Layton was ordered not to talk to boyfriend and co-defendant Arturo Novoa, prosecutors claim the pair continue communicating with each other — and that violates her bond.

On Thursday morning, prosecutors submitted prison phone records indicating the pair have contacted each other dozens of times since Novoa was sentenced in June, often using Layton’s son as a go-between in the conversations.

Prosecutors say they’ll ask Judge Anthony Donofrio to throw out Layton’s plea so they can charge her in Graves’ murder.

On Thursday in court, they asked Layton’s original million-dollar bond be reinstated, having her locked up. The judge said he’ll make a decision soon.

Co-defendant in Youngstown murder, dismemberment case ordered to report to jail

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A co-defendant in the case of a Youngstown woman’s death and dismemberment nearly three years ago has been ordered to report to jail.

On December 12, prosecutors argued Layton violated the conditions of her bond by talking to her codefendant and boyfriend, Arturo Novoa, even though she was ordered not to.

According to court documents, Layton had 37 phone calls with Novoa while he was in jail.

On Friday, Judge Anthony Donofrio set her bond at $20,000 cash and she must turn herself in until it is posted.

Co-defendant in Youngstown murder, dismemberment case turns herself in

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The sister of murder victim 28-year-old Shannon Graves insists one of the people charged in her death should have never been allowed out of jail. Now that suspect is back behind bars.

Late Friday, Judge Anthony Donofrio ordered Layton be jailed until she can post a $20,000 dollar bond.

The judge ruled Layton had repeatedly violated terms of her release by talking with co-defendant and boyfriend Arturo Novoa, who’s already serving a life sentence for the crimes.

As part of her original agreement with Mahoning County prosecutors, Layton pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse and obstruction. Murder charges were dismissed in exchange for her cooperation with investigators.

But a special prosecutor with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office claims Layton has lied to authorities.

In his ruling Friday, the judge said prosecutors can argue to have Layton’s original deal thrown out so they can reindict her for the murder.
