Oklahoma brothers plead guilty to grisly double murder
    UPDATED AT 01:21PM, MAY 1, 2019
MOORE, Okla. – Two men accused of playing a role in a grisly double murder have withdrawn their not guilty pleas and waived their right to a trial.

Around 6 p.m. on April 14, 2018, 21-year-old Alize Ramon Smith and 21-year-old Jarron Keonte Moreland, went to the Crest in Moore to do a Craigslist exchange, Moreland’s family members told KFOR.

While at the Crest, police say a white van pulled up to the two men, and Moreland and Smith either got into the van willingly or were pulled inside the vehicle. At some point, witnesses reported that they heard gunshots and the van sped out of the parking lot.
    [...]
On April 17, court documents note that detectives saw a White Chrysler Town and Country van as they approached the Boettler home. They also saw “cleaning products and a power washer around the vehicle,” “dried blood spatter on the ceiling of the van” and “a bucket of water with a chainsaw bar inside and soaking in the water along with several jigsaw blades.”

According to the warrant return, police found pliers, a hatchet and chainsaw parts soaking in bleach.

Court documents state that Boettler’s brother, 22-year-old Kevin Garcia- Boettler, drove the van and Brett Boettler to the Crest parking lot in order to meet Smith. However, things took a turn when Moreland and Smith got into the back seat of the van.

“There was apparently going to be a sale of a gun, possibly off of Craigslist when the two victims entered the vehicle,” Moore Police Sgt. Jeremy Lewis told News 4 on April 18. “The suspects claimed they heard a gun being racked or cocked. At that point, one of those individuals fired at the two victims that entered the van and killed them both at that time.”

Garcia-Boettler told police he got scared and sped out of the parking lot and believed Moreland and Smith to be dead.

Authorities allege that the brothers called their mother, Crystal Boettler, who told them to drive to a property in the 5100 block of N. Sooner Rd., according to a probable cause affidavit.

Court documents say when the brothers arrived at the property, their mother’s boyfriend, Johnny Shane Barker, allegedly helped them remove the bodies, cover them with tarps and attached cinder blocks around them with chains.

    [...]
Brett Boettler was charged in Cleveland County with one count of second-degree murder, one count of first-degree murder, unlawful removal of a dead body, and desecration of a corpse, as well as a felony firearm possession charge.

Kevin Garcia-Boettler was also charged with felony accessory to second-degree murder and unlawful removal of a dead body. Barker is facing accessory to second-degree murder, unlawful removal of a dead body and desecration of a human corpse.

Crystal Boettler is charged with one count of accessory to second-degree murder.

On Wednesday, Brett Boettler and Kevin Garcia-Boettler withdrew their not guilty pleas, and instead pleaded guilty to the charges.

A judge sentenced Kevin Garcia-Boettler to 25 years.

Brett Boettler technically received a life sentence, but the district attorney’s office told News 4 that he will end up serving 30 years in prison and 15 years on probation.

    Yes, I'd think so!

    UPDATED AT 06:32PM, MAY 2, 2019
    [...]
"Justice wasn’t served for what they did. I mean, we weren’t able to give a proper burial for Jarron,' said his cousin Johnetra Moreland.

Smith's aunt echoed a similar sentiment.

"There’s not enough time those two individuals could have received that could even give our family justice," said Sheneka Henderson. "But the time they did receive was just not enough time. They don’t deserve to see the world. They don’t deserve to get out. They don’t deserve to do anything based off of two murders. They dismembered Alize and Jarron."

According to White, his office met with family members several times.

"We talked about some of the challenges we had, some of the issues each case may have but more importantly, we talked about the pain they were going through. The tragedy, quite frankly, that it was," he said. "In those conversations, we were able to come to an agreement as far as what we thought was appropriate. Obviously, we want as much time as we can get. We wanted more time but through those meetings with those representatives of the victims’ families, we were able to arrive at a number that we felt was appropriate for the resolution of this case."

Kennetha Moreland told News 4, she didn't think the sentences handed down Wednesday would ever truly deliver justice to their families. However, she agreed to the punishments because she was trying to find closure as best she could.

"I’m just so glad I don’t ever have to come back to this place [court], because every time I come back to this place, it reopens the wound. When I think it’s halfway healed, it goes pouring back into it," she said.

She and Moreland's father, Jerry Anderson, say among the hardest parts of the grieving process was having to explain it to Moreland's seven-year-old son.
    [...]
The Boettlers' mother Crystal Boettler and her boyfriend Johnny Shane Barker have also been charged in connection to this case. Their cases are pending in Oklahoma County.

Family members: Sentences not severe enough in double homicide case

    May 4, 2019

"The father of one of two men murdered in Moore last year said he was unhappy with sentences given to two brothers charged in connection with the crime...

    Plea deals and sentencing

Brett Boettler pleaded guilty to seven felony counts, including two counts of first-degree murder, after he agreed to a plea deal with the DA's office. Brett received a life sentence, although it was a split sentence, which White said means he’ll serve at least 85 percent of a 30-year sentence and then will spend 15 years on probation.

Kevin Garcia-Boettler pleaded guilty to two felonies — accessory to murder after the fact and unlawful removal of a dead body — after reaching a plea deal with Mashburn's office. Kevin received a 25-year sentence.

Crystal Boettler and Barker will be tried in Oklahoma County due to a state statute that requires individuals charged as accessories to murder to be tried in the county in which their alleged crime was committed, White said.

Crystal Boettler has a pretrial conference scheduled for May 15 in front of Judge Kendra Coleman, while Barker has a preliminary hearing in front of Judge Lisa Hammond on June 21."
