Coal miner's lung? IIRC, there are some strip mines in southern Kansas, but this lung problem is linked to underground mines -- West Virginia, Pennsylvania?

Google is my friend!

Underground mines in southern Kansas:

Coal mining in southeast Kansas - Kansapedia - Kansas Historical Society

After peak production in 1926, most of the mining ended by 1970; all closed by 1997. Kansas miners produced 50 percent of all zinc and 10 percent of all lead mined in the United States, carrying to the surface nearly 2.9 million tons of zinc and 115 million tons of ore.

Coal mining | GeoKansas

Strip mining became the preferred method in southeastern Kansas in the 1930s, although underground mining continued there until 1960 and in Osage County until 1964.

Big Brutus, Inc.

MapQuest drive time from Big Brutus to Atoka, about 4 hours. IDK what that would have been in the 70's.

Wonder how many Oklahoma boys headed north to Kansas for the mining jobs, which ended in the early '70's?

And, I think that was a Ban-Rol waistband?

My Mom sewed a lot -- this was available in fabric stores & is still found in men's slacks at retail.

JMHO YMMV

So we're looking at someone that most likely spent a sizable chunk of time in either West Virginia, Southern Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, or Alabama but also possibly Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, or Montana.

On August 17, 1972 the remains of an approximately 30-55 year old white male were found along the highway in the Atoka area. It is believed the man died in 1972 and was about 5 foot 8 inches tall.
