TEXAS COUNTY, Okla. (KFDA) - NewsChannel 10 obtained over a dozen search warrants related to the investigation of two Kansas women’s deaths.

Documents reveal the bodies of 27-year-old Veronica Butler and 39-year-old Jillian Kelley were found in a chest freezer on a property leased by Tad Cullum, 8.5 miles away from where Butler’s car was found abandoned.

[..]

On April 13, a search warrant was carried out at the property. Documents state an excavation on a possible burial site was started and on April 14, the chest freezer was found.

[..]

Law enforcement also found personal items in the hole that did not belong to Butler or Kelley.

Documents also reveal some items seized as evidence from the property include multiple pieces of clothing with possible blood, a saw handle, tape, a taser and a sheathed k-bar knife.

The new documents do not reveal how the two women were killed, however, NewsChannel10 has requested the summary report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and will receive it once available.

[..]

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has Cora and Cole Twombly’s pickup in custody as well as a stock trailer.

Documents reveal Cora Twombly’s daughter was made to clean the interior of the pickup truck after Cora and Cole returned from the “mission.” A friend of the daughter’s also helped clean the pickup and observed a stain the friend thought might be blood.

Cora and Cole Twombly were arrested April 13 while driving the pickup.

The OSBI took a gooseneck stock trailer into custody after a Twombly family member reported it to an agent, according to documents. The family member told authorities on April 16 that the trailer did not belong to him and he did not know where it came from.

Documents state witnesses reported to the OSBI there was a white or silver gooseneck stock trailer seen at the location of Butler’s abandoned vehicle.

The next court appearance is scheduled for June 19 at 9:00 a.m.

The scene at Grice’s court appearance Wednesday was much calmer than at a previous hearing for the other four suspects, where victims of the family members had to be held back, swearing at the accused as they entered the building.

Grice said he will need a public defender appointed for him as he can’t afford to hire a private lawyer. According to the court documents, Grice admitted he was part of the planning, killing and burying of Butler and Kelley.

When asked by a NewsNation reporter while walking into court if he had anything to say to the victims’ families, Grice said, “Sorry for their loss.”

To his family, Grice said, “I miss them. I love them.”

Residents of Guymon, Oklahoma, who spoke to NewsNation said he lived with his wife and kids out in the country. Grice’s wife, NewsNation was told, has since left town with the children and says she knew absolutely nothing about the alleged killings.

The affidavit also specifically names a "Barret and Lacy Cook," saying that Butler's kids stayed the night with them the day before she went missing. It also says that the group would regularly have their God's Misfits anti-government meetings at the Cooks' house.

On April 18, a witness said Grice came to his home the day before and asked several peculiar questions ...

Grice told the witness he was concerned about his DNA being in the hole that Butler and Kelley were found in because he had been to the Twombly’s house.

OSBI received a tip on April 19 from someone who said he saw Grice on March 30-31 with a bandaged right hand. Grice told him that he cut it while cutting fencing.

Butler and Kelley’s phone records show that they were active on their carriers until around 9:42 a.m., when their devices stopped transmitting, according to OSBI.

OSBI says that neither of their phones were found at the scene or in the vehicle, and are still missing.

What should we make of “God’s Misfits?”

That’s the name Oklahoma authorities say a small antigovernment group who held worship services in their homes called themselves. Four of these “misfits” have been charged with the kidnapping and murder of a pair of southwest Kansas women missing since March 30.

[..]

Hunter McKee, an OSBI public information officer, referred my questions about the case and what authorities had learned about “God’s Misfits” to court records in Texas County District Court at Guymon.

[..]

It is, of course, important to remember the defendants are innocent until proven guilty. But looking over the court filings, there is a prodigious amount of evidence against these individuals, who seem bound together by their hatred of the government and their twisted interpretation of faith.

[..]

Cole Twombly seemed to be the most outspoken, at least on social media, and his posts went right up to April 12, when he described celebrating his 50th birthday. In addition to ranch life, he posted or reposted on Facebook about Cliven Bundy and his bloody standoff with federal agents over grazing rights; passed along an Ayn Rand quote about it being impossible for innocent men to live without breaking government’s laws; and an odd and chilling post about a toy made to resemble the armored “Killdozer” that Marvin Heemeyer used to level city hall and other structures in 2004 at Granby, Colorado. There’s also a lot of hateful stuff that is anti-vax, anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-liberal.

[..]

On Oct. 5, he thanked “the Keyes community and the Misfits” for a prayer meeting that night at a park. “Keyes is claimed for the almighty God through Jesus name !!!,” he posted. “NOTHING CAN STOP WHAT IS COMING !!!”

[..]

It appears “God’s Misfits” have beliefs similar to the sovereign citizen movement, mixed with QAnon conspiracies, although I couldn’t find a coherent ideology on Cole Twombly’s page. So-called sovereign citizens believe a number of wacko things, including that they can ignore laws and court orders because they have freed themselves from an illegitimate and oppressive government.

But that didn’t stop the “Misfits” from accepting government farm subsidies. The EWG Farm Subsidy Database indicates Tifany Adams took at least $134,000 in subsidies since 2013. She took $2,828 in crop rotation payments in October 2023, according to the USDA. Last year, she even was elected chair of the Cimarron County GOP, according to state officials.

So, what to make of “God’s Misfits?”

They have been engaged in the kind of political hate-mongering and misinformation that has driven our country to the edge of political catastrophe, if Cole Twombly’s Facebook page is any indication. This does not mean that everyone who subscribes to right-wing conspiracy theory or is QAnon curious is prone to violence, but violence — especially armed resistance to authority — is fundamental to this kind of political extremism.
