More than 70 racing greyhounds died last night in a fire at the ZEZ Kennels in Brooke County, W.Va.
Brooke County Sheriff Rich Ferguson said deputies are investigating the cause of the fire and have called in the county fire marshal and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The kennel, a converted trailer just a few feet off Girty's Point Road, was completely engulfed in flames and smoke when firefighters from three volunteer fire companies arrived on the scene at about 9:45 p.m., Sheriff Ferguson said. "The dogs didn't have a chance. The firefighters said the dogs were silent" when they arrived on the scene. The fire was extinguished within the hour. No firefighters were injured.
