The officers responded to a report of an 11-year-old girl being shot Wednesday afternoon on Baltimore Pike and Lewis Avenue, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer told NBC10.

The officers arrived at the location and a shooter inside a nearby home immediately opened fire at them, according to Stollsteimer.

The ordeal began at 3:47 p.m. when an East Lansdowne Police Officer and a Lansdowne Police Officer responded to a report of an 11-year-old girl being shot on Lewis Avenue in East Lansdowne.

When the officers arrived at the scene, a gunman inside a home immediately opened fire, police said.

The gunfire eventually stopped and by 6 p.m. the fire was mostly under control though there was still smoke. During an early evening press conference, Stollsteimer said they were unsure if the gunman was still inside the house.

During another press conference shortly after 7:30 p.m., Stollsteimer revealed six to eight people live inside the home where the fire took place and they're currently unaccounted for.

"This is going to take awhile. Okay? We're going to be very safe," Stollsteimer said Thursday morning. "This is a recovery operation. There's nobody alive inside that burned out hulk of a house."

Investigators planned to enter the home on Lewis Avenue Thursday though there are concerns the house will collapse after drones spotted hot spots, according to Stollsteimer.

"There's like six feet of water in the basement," Stollsteimer said. "The walls could collapse at anytime and there are still hotspots burning."

Officials have not released the identities of any of the residents inside the home. A source told NBC10 the eldest child in the family attends Penn Wood High School while two other family members attend Penn Wood Middle School and East Lansdowne Elementary School.

The ordeal began Wednesday at 3:47 p.m. when East Lansdowne Police Officer John Meehan, 44, and Lansdowne Police Officer David Schiazza, 54, responded to a report of an 11-year-old girl being shot on Lewis Avenue in East Lansdowne.

Law enforcement sources tell me 6 people are presumed dead, including suspected shooter. They believe shooter killed his brother, sister-in-law & the couple’s 3 children. Shooter’s parents were able to escape/called 911, per sources

"I can't tell you who that is or anything like that, but we found the remains of a human torso and a rifle, and that's really all I can tell you at this point," Stollsteimer said.

Family members identified, all from the Le family; grandparents escaped
It all began with a 911 call for a report of a shooting at 58 Lewis Ave. The alleged shooter was identified by his mother as 43-year-old Canh Le.

Le's mother, Chin Le, told Action News that she heard Canh Le having an argument with his 13-year-old niece in a upstairs bedroom.

Chin Le said she heard Canh Le say he was going to get a gun.

That's when Chin Le said her husband took her out of the home and the shots were fired. Chin Le said it was her husband who called 911.

Chin Le said she has no idea why Canh Le had a gun. She went on to say her son has no known history of mental illness.

[...]

She went on to say her other son, Xuong Le, and his wife, Britni Le, were also presumed dead, along with their three children, NaKayla, 13, NaTayla, 17, and Xavier, 10.

Stollsteimer said the six members of the "Le family" resided in the home and are all believed to be dead. He did not reveal their full names but said they were three adults and three children.

So no eleven year old girl at all? Confused about that.

[...]

According to Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer, the recovery of all six bodies concludes the on-site investigation, so the home will now be turned over to East Lansdowne Borough for demolition.

A cause of death for each victim was released Wednesday after the remains were turned over to the medical examiner earlier this month.

Officials have determined that Xuong, Britni, NaTalya and NaKayla were all killed by gunfire. Xavier, the youngest child, died from smoke inhalation.

With the criminal investigation about to come to a close, officials say they will probably never know what sparked the argument that turned into a deadly shooting and fire.

"Cahn
[sic: Canh Le] took the ‘why’ to his grave," District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said.
