Authorities ID victim in Bethlehem burning body case, call it a 'very violent type of homicide'
Investigators say the man whose burning body was found Tuesday outside a Bethlehem apartment complex was stabbed several times and set ablaze while still alive.
Authorities have ruled his killing a homicide and identified the man as Tyrell Michael Holmes, 18, of Bethlehem. During a news conference Wednesday afternoon, they said his attackers are still on the loose.
Northampton County Zachary Lysek said Holmes died of smoke inhalation, thermal injuries and multiple stab wounds.
[...]
It is a very violent type of homicide, DiLuzio said, adding that a dozen detectives and the forensic unit are working on the case.
District Attorney John Morganelli said the violent nature of the killing, what he called torture, makes it likely a first-degree homicide case.
He said a trained police dog detected accelerants in the grass near where police found the body
The pre-dawn gruesome discovery of a body ablaze brought officers to a sidewalk at Parkhurst Apartments on Barbara Street.
Witnesses told police they heard the man scream and crawl along the ground. An officer put out the flames with an extinguisher.
Witness Daniel Vaughn said he was watching television around 2:30 a.m. when he saw flames outside. When he went to investigate, he said he saw what he thought was a burning mannequin near a trash container.
I dont ever want to see something like that again, Vaughn said.
