Investigators looking into the disappearance of an elderly man from Elizabeth Township are now asking for the public's help.

Vernon Hayden, 71, has been missing since last weekend; and police say his disappearance is suspicious.

Just yesterday, authorities took Hayden's step-grandson into custody for questioning after finding the missing man's pickup truck in Brentwood.

Police are expected to charge that man, Timothy Large, 30, with stealing Hayden's truck.

Police yesterday continued their search for 71-year-old Vernon Hayden of Elizabeth Township, but an affidavit supporting the arrest of his step-grandson on theft and burglary charges indicates he stole Mr. Hayden's truck and wallet and used his ATM card in Uniontown and on the South Side.

The court papers also indicate that Timothy Large Jr., identified as the suspect in Mr. Hayden's disappearance, lied when he told police that he ditched the fiberglass cap of Mr. Hayden's Chevy Silverado along Route 51 in Uniontown on Dec. 9.

Sounds like the step-grandson had something to do with the disappearance. I wonder what he did with the missing man? He even had his wallet! I hope they find the man even though I don't think the outcome is going to be a good one. Step-grandson is probably a druggie.

Step-grandson accused in Hayden Sr. slay case

"Timothy Alan Large Jr., of Forward Township, described in gruesome detail how he shot his stepgrandfather in the head and disposed of his body, police say.

Large Jr., who police said confessed to shooting and killing his step-grandfather and dumping the body in a river, was charged Tuesday with criminal homicide.

Large Jr., 30, of Sunnyside Hollow Road, also was charged with abuse of a corpse and related crimes in the death of Vernon Hayden Sr., 71, of Elizabeth Township."

Officials Locate Missing Elizabeth Twp Man's Body

"The body of 71-year-old Vernon Hayden was found in a shallow grave near the Somerset-Bedford County border on Wednesday.

Hayden's step-grandson, Timothy Large, Jr., of Forward, is facing several charges in the man's death.

Initially, officials say Large told police he killed Hayden and dumped his body in the Monongahela River.

That prompted divers to search the river for days without success, but police say Large eventually admitted to where he actually put Hayden's body"
