On May 11th 2023, Peloton announced a voluntary recall of original Peloton model Bikes sold from January 2018 to May 2023 in the US, and is offering Members a replacement of their Bike’s seat post as the approved repair. This voluntary recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Peloton is offering a free, replacement seat post to all US Peloton original Bike owners, which can be installed at home, without the need for a service call.

The Peloton original Bike model can be identified by its PL-01 model number on the label located on the inside front fork (near the flywheel), the red “P” logo followed by the white-colored Peloton brand name on the bike’s frame, and by its non-swivel display. As part of our commitment to product safety, we are voluntarily recalling the seat post of affected units to provide a free replacement seat post.

This voluntary recall only applies to the Peloton original Bike sold in the US. This matter does not affect international and North America Bike+ nor international Peloton original Bikes.

Please read this notice carefully.

REASON FOR RECALL: The original Peloton Bike seat post can break unexpectedly during use, creating a potential fall and injury risk. Peloton has identified 35 reports of seat posts breaking out of 2,160,000 units sold in the US. There have been 13 reports of injuries, including a wrist fracture, lacerations and bruises.

To obtain your free, replacement seat post, or for questions regarding this announcement, please contact our Member Support team on our toll-free number at 866-679-9129 from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. ET, 7 days a week, or visit our Support site

There is even a Facebook page for people who have had problems with Peleton. I can't find the page now, I thought about getting one, and looked at the complaints and decided against it.

Not related to the seat post issue, but interesting nonetheless:
  • The family of a New York man claims he was killed by his Peloton bike just six months after buying it, according to a lawsuit filed in state court.
  • The New Yorker was holding on to the bike to get up from the floor when it spun around and severed his carotid artery, killing him "instantly," according to the lawsuit.
  • In response, Peloton said Furtado's negligence caused his death and the company is not legally responsible.
