We're compiling information on unsolved homicides and disappearances and unidentified bodies in the U.S. related to people who traveled by freight train. We're hoping some here might be willing to help. We're including murders on boxcars and victims or suspects who traveled by freight train, or were in railyards or camps. We recently tracked down a large cache of data on train riders compiled in the 1990s by a detective who is now dead but whose family (thank goodness) kept his years of research in a storage unit. From that and our own research, we realized some riders were showing up at homicides in different parts of the country and hadn't been connected by investigators. We also feel these cases are among the least investigated of serious crimes. We've found several that had been forgotten by local LE and not reported to the state cold case database.

We've started a website to provide basic information: Railroad Murders. (It's live, but just so that volunteers can envision what it will look like. We'll eventually add more detail and photos on individual cases.) We've started with Utah and will work our way out, but we're hoping some on here might volunteer to take an area and check databases or newspapers. Anyone got a little time to help?

An interesting study. There are some serial killers associated with railroads, but probably only a few have been identified.

Rudy Bladel was nicknamed "The Railway Sniper" and believed to have shot at least 7 Railroad employees (train operators, engineers, etc.) in the Michigan/Indiana area. He has a thread here on websleuths in the Serial Killer section.

A cold case which is featured in the "Missing Pre 1960" is that of Little Jackie Theel, a 6 year old boy who went missing in Paynesville, Minnesota in September 1944. While never proven exactly what became of him, it is mentioned that his home was near the railroad and scenting dogs did pick up his trail near the railroad tracks.

Doing word searches in various Websleuths topic areas might produce similar results of cases associated with rail travel or railroad yards.

There are at least 2 deceased in railroad cars here.

IIRC one is in the Tattoos thread, was found on top of a box car in the West.

Another in a coal car, in the Southeast.

I'll try to find the threads.
