I'm sorry, what? How is any domestic violence considered NOT significant? Is a little slap meant to be OK? What about a kick? When does it become an "issue"? What level is considered "significant" in your eyes Mr Thurtell? As an officer of the law, and a high ranking one at that, your words have power. Use them wisely. Perhaps use them to resign from your position that is meant to protect the citizens of your country, from all unlawful things, even "insignificant" levels of domestic violence.
RSBM. Perhaps it would be a good idea to start a petition calling for Mr. Thurtell's resignation.

"Were the right dogs used in the search for missing Ballarat mum Samantha Murphy?"

Behind a paywall :(

I couldn't agree more with you HoneyBunOne. Thank you for your post.

"Deputy Commissioner Thurtell said the man was known to police for previous domestic matters but not "significant issues"."

Right there, that comment from Deputy Commissioner Thurtell demonstrates a mind-set of profound and deeply-rooted ignorance.
It is IMO, that very mindset which is a major cause (perhaps the root cause) of the endemic problem of domestic violence in our society today.

It is my opinion that anyone occupying such an important and influential position must be capable of making public comments on crucial matters without demonstrating such horrifying and dangerous ignorance.
What message does Deputy Commissioner Thurtell's comment give to members of the police force?

There is so much more which I'd love to say about this matter, but am doing my best to restrain myself.

JMO
Yes to this above ^^ and the prior post too! Just horrid ‘blindness’ IMO to reality and the nature of such violence. As if there are degrees of it. SMH!

I am not a resident of Australia, but those words immediately remind me of the case of ‘Unbelievable’ a series on Netflix. And IMO in that series much went to the believability and credibility of rape and sexual assault or domestic violence victims and their statements and questioning by investigators. And also IMO an apparent or perceived ‘bias’ depending on whether the investigator questioning the victim was male or female.

As others suggested themselves, I best stop here before I tread where I shouldn’t.

Yet I sincerely hope that Deputy Commissioner and his comments are properly examined and investigated; and that the individual is either removed from the position and / or otherwise properly addressed. MOO

Police have launched a fresh search for missing woman Samantha Murphy's remains and have deployed an excavator as part of their efforts.

Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad, together with a range of specialist resources, will today undertake a new targeted search in the Ballarat area.

'Police are undertaking a targeted search in the Ballarat area today as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Samantha Murphy,' police said.

They asked members of the public not to attend the search.

"We are not in a position to supply further specific details of today's operational activity at this time," a police spokesperson said.

Short video of today’s search.

VICPOL not giving up any time soon. ..... Somehow, I don't think these searches are in any way under the direction of Mr S. who, as far as is known, is still maintaining silence. So.. someone else is coming up with these search destinations, based on what, who knows ... Someone else is talking to the police, it seems.

Photos in the link above posted by @brjakj show police looking at an object, there are several photos.
I looked with my big Miss Marple magnifying glass but can't make out what it is.

It actually looks like a mobile phone (first image) when I zoom in on my iPad …. A metallic edge and black screen … BUT JMO ….
