I am a cousin of nathan Smith. We learned of this Tuesday evening and his daughter learned of it for the 1st time as well. DNA from Nathan's son is being tested now. We dont know for sure yet. Sadly his son is in custody and knows something or is involved. Nathan was estranged from his kids for years and eventually his son was trying to start a relationship with him. Its tragic that he got caught up in all this. Nathan's daughter is having a very hard time dealing with this as well. She has been in contact with her father for a few years now. Please pray for this family. Nathan has a brother as well who is looking for answers
I have it on good authority that Jesse Smith is actually in Texas in jail on unrelated charges. They have not formally charged him yet. Cops haven't formally released the ID of the second person who was found yet. Does that square with what you know?

To those of you who personally know Ruth and Nathan, why do you think Jesse might be motivated to be involved in this? Why do you think the original missing posters indicated Ruth might be in danger? What was going on in this family? We're there any signs that things would go this badly?

Melissa-I hope your family gets the answers they need.

WonderMore- I’m sickened to think anyone would be capable of something like this. From what I understand, the couple had gotten into arguments causing Ruth to leave. I don’t know how far those arguments escalated but Nathan appeared to be possessive and those of us who were close feared for her. While efforts were made to keep her away from S.C. due to concerns about her relationship with Nathan, I personally did not believe that Ruth would pass away, at least not until she went missing. Ruth loved Nathan and if his YouTube videos are any indication, he appeared to love her. Once she went missing, there was a fear that maybe he was so angry that she’d left that he did the unthinkable. Once I saw the videos however I couldn’t help but think, “Why would anyone kill someone they seem to love so much?”

I know love can send people into a blind rage but I don’t know this case leaves me absolutely dumbfounded. I certainly did not believe anyone else could have a motive to hurt her.

Anyway, that’s all I will say. The pain from this loss is too deep right now. I would rather wait for everything to be confirmed in the news before I talk about this again. Thanks to everyone who cares about this case.

Confirmation is good instead of rumors and speculation. They only make it more painful

I am Ruth's son's aunt. I have remained a close friend for years until recently. I could not continue offering my ear to an endless stream of bad decisions, and the latest cost her life. Ruth did not want to work. She wanted to be taken care of. Nathan was an abuser and she was really afraid of him. We had many conversations. Apparently he has a wife (yes he is married) in Ohio who is very afraid of him. A couple years ago, Nathan put a house he owned outright in Ohio in Ruth's name. At the time, I asked her why he would do this and she offered no explanation. When Ruth called me last Christmas season, her dad had picked her up and they were on I95 fleeing from Nathan and heading back to NJ. She told me the OH house had sold and she was getting the dough. I warned her Nathan was not going to let her get away with it. Last time she texted me was a couple months ago from Anna's house in Orlando. I didn't text much back because her lifestyle had become a universe away from what I considered acceptable. I first noticed a complete change in Ruth when she lost considerable weight about 3 yrs ago. She had a bubbly personality and a compassionate heart that gave way to extreme narcissism. I am sorry for her family as I had already grieved the loss of our friendship. Now, her already troubled son is dealing with this as well.

Are there any MSM updates in this case? Has the other body been identified? Any suspects?

Thanks for sharing your experience with Ruth. I completely understand your feelings. My heart goes out to you and Ruth's son. I hope there is justice for Ruth's murder. No matter the choices she has made, she did not deserve to be killed and burned. (Not that you have implied otherwise! I'm just stating the obvious.)

Thank you for your encouragement. If what I was told is correct, I don't believe there will be justice for Ruth's murder because Nathan murdered her. Her body lay there 2 days while he tried to figure out what to do. He was packing up his stuff to flee when son from TX arrived. Some altercation must have ensued because son shot his father. Son panicked and burned both bodies. This is speculation on my part. Now son has confessed to murdering his father, but not Ruth. The investigation continues. It is sordid and ripe for a Dateline episode. I wish now I had not withdrawn from her and tried to get her to stay away from him, but I am truly doubtful she would have listened. I am sorry for Nathan's relatives reading this. It must be hard. Evan, if you are reading this, call me. I heard you were living in the house now.

Is evan Ruth's son? I was in contact with Nathan's daughter but she is upset with me so I have not heard any more updates. I talked to Nathan's wife from Ohio yesterday and she has not been notified yet of any new info.

Evan is Ruth's son. Ruth was not married to Nathan. Nathan was still married to another woman who lives in perhaps London, OH. She is very afraid of him (hopefully not any more) and he was abusive to her and her other children. I "think" Nathan put the property in Ruth's name to hide it from his wife as Ohio is a community property state.

Yes he is still married to Vicki. And she finally left. Nathan never had any thing in his name because child support was after him plus he left Texas in a lot of trouble. The only reason nathan ever put anything in someone else's name was to protect himself. Vicky wanted nothing to do with their house in ohio
