[Spartanburg Sheriff's Lt. Tony] Ivey said that the remains were found in a wooded area and appeared to have been there for several years.

The person who found the remains told FOX Carolina that he was with a group looking for scrap metal when he found the skeleton.

...

A report from The Associated Press said the remains were found wrapped in plastic underneath a couch.

...

Ivey said investigators do not have a record of any missing people within the last few years in the Startex area.

Here are six persons missing under suspicious circumstances from neighboring cities. For the time being, I am not including persons classified as Runaways, Family Abductions, Alzheimers-related disappearances, etc.

Heather Rena Sellers (Sep 2002 - Spartanburg) http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/sellars_heather.html
Darryl Keith Miller (Jul 2005 - Spartanburg) http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/miller_darryl.html
Sandra Denise Jeter (May 2010 - Spartanburg) http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/j/jeter_sandra.html
Sharon Evelyn Medlin (May 1998 - Greer) http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/medlin_sharon.html
Eric Lee Mason (Jan 1996 - Greenville) http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/mason_eric.html
Lila Mae Martin (Apr 2004 - Greenville) http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/martin_lila.html

Oh my! Can you imagine stumbling across such a grisley scene? Here's another link...

Maybe since the teeth are still in the skull dental records can ID this person quickly. Hopefully someone's family will have closure soon.

ETA
Lila Mae Martin was missing her teeth and wore dentures. The man who found the remains said the teeth were still in the skull so I guess that rules her out.

How long would a body have to be there for clothes and hair to be gone?

I suppose it would depend on the climate and many other variables. I would tend to lean toward the body was dumped nude. Since the remains were wrapped in a tarp and under a couch, it should have been pretty dark and I would think might be similiar to being underground. As far as there being no hair, I find that kinda odd. I would have thought that the tarp would have kept that fairly contained. I suppose it would also depend on animal activity. Both clothing and hair tend to be fairly slow in decomposition, when compared to flesh.

I love how this news article says:

"Officials say they don't have any records of a missing person report."
http://www2.wspa.com/news/2011/oct/26/7/body-found-wooded-area-startex-ar-2610788/

And then there is this article about a family who wonders if the remains belong to Evelyn Shelton.

"Shelton, 42, disappeared around May 20, and was last seen leaving a home on N. Dean Street in the City of Spartanburg, according to investigators."

http://www2.wspa.com/news/2011/jul/04/4/new-clue-still-no-sign-missing-woman-ar-2065003/

I realize that the remains are older than what Shelton's would be, but what happened to no reports of missing persons?
*shaking head*

I think the body was most likely nude when disposed. Surely there would be fabric remnants since the remains were protected by the elements with the tarp and couch covering them. I would think that there would be hair too. If not still attached to the skull, then located inside the tarp. Perhaps the person was bald. Darrell keith Miller appears to be bald. Authorities are now stating that the victim was a woman.

STARTEX, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Investigators said Thursday that a skeleton found in Startex on Wednesday was that of a woman.

Lt. Tony Ivey, of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, said the remains were found about noon off South Main Street.

Ivey said that the remains were found in a wooded area and appeared to have been there for several years.
...

[forensic anthropologist Suzanne] Abel told FOX Carolina that the fully skeletonized remains were that of a woman. She said acidic soil in the area helped speed up decomposition.

That, combined with waltzingmatilda's observation that the victim had teeth and Lila Martin did not, reduces my previous list to three.

Has anyone found any updates on this? I can't find a thing!

Me neither Wanting2Help. I wish the media would follow up and at least give an approx. ht. of this victim. It sure would help in ruling in/out the missing women that CarlK has posted!

Investigators know her hair color, about how tall she was, what jewelry she wore and what dental work she had done while she was alive. They know her race - white - and that she was 40 to 50 years old when she died.

Investigators also have evidence that points to how she died before her body was hidden under a couch and other debris in a wooded area in the Startex mill village five to six years ago.

Sheila Ann Carver Jun'98 (Seneca - 57 Miles from Startex) http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/carver_shelia.html

Snipped for space...

These 2 are not on the rule out list. Medlin is more in the age range and her hair was dyed like the UID's was. But what about Carver? The UIDs "breastbone (sternum) was fractured and healing had begun. May have been caused by the seat belt during an auto accident which occurred a short period of time prior to death". The profile for Carver says she recently purchased a new car. I wonder if it was because she had to, due to an accident?? They both are listed as having pierced ears like the UID.

What do you think???

The racial description of the decedent is Black/White admixed, so I would say that that Sharon Medlin and Sheila Carver are probably not likely.
