World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by Louisville Metro Police Department on Friday morning while trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.

Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.

According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but he continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.

WAVE News reached out to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) for more information. Scheffler was booked at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections on the following charges:

• Second-degree assault of a police officer
• Third-degree criminal mischief
• Reckless driving
• Disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by police after he was accused of dragging an officer with his car Friday outside of the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, according to an incident report.

Footage posted on X by ESPN's Jeff Darlington appeared to show Scheffler being led away by officers. Scheffler appears to turn to Darlington as he is being led away and asks, "Can you please help me?"

Scheffler’s attorney Steve Romines called the arrest a misunderstanding and told The Associated Press they “will litigate the case as it goes.”...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The police officer who attempted to stop world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler from entering Valhalla Golf Club on Friday morning was dragged to the ground and suffered "pain, swelling and abrasions" to his left wrist and knee after Scheffler's car accelerated, according to an incident report released by the Louisville Metro Police Department.

The report, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, said detective Bryan Gillis, identified as Det. Gillis in the report, was directing traffic at Shelbyville Road near Gate 1 of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship. Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.

The report said Gillis was standing in the middle of the westbound lanes when Scheffler's SUV pulled into the lanes to avoid the traffic backup The report said Gillis was wearing a full police uniform and a "high-visibility yellow reflective rain jacket."

Possible crack in Scheffler’s case? County attorney to speak at court Wednesday

As questions swirl around the Louisville arrest of the world’s top golfer, lawyers in the case to make separate appearances.

Neither side is sharing details publicly, but a significant development — possibly a dismissal of charges — is brewing in Kentucky’s case against Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top golfer.

Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell’s office announced Tuesday he will be addressing the court at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Louisville.

Also Tuesday, Steve Romines, Scheffler’s lawyer, said in a text message he will hold a 1:30 p.m. news conference Wednesday outside the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Neither side would elaborate, but Scheffler’s arraignment is not scheduled until June 3.

Steve Rush, a spokesman for the local courts, said Scheffler’s arraignment is still on the docket, but he confirmed O’Connell would address the court Wednesday.

Prosecutors dropped criminal charges against Scottie Scheffler on Wednesday, less than two weeks after the world's top golfer was arrested outside the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.

Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell told a judge his office couldn't move forward with the charges based on the evidence and he moved to dismiss the case.

O'Connell said Wednesday that the evidence corroborated Scheffler's characterization of the incident as a misunderstanding between him and the detective.

"Mr. Scheffler's actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses," O'Connell said in court.
