Shannon was a sophomore at Emory University and employed by a softball country club in Atlanta, Georgia in 1994. She arrived for her work shift at approximately 8:40 am on March 26, 1994. She worked until approximately 12:40 pm. She was seen afterward across the street at a gas station where she purchased a soft drink. She has never been seen again.
Shannon's roommate became concerned when she failed to return home by the next morning. Her car was found abandoned in the gas station parking lot later that day.
An unidentified man contacted the tip line several days later. He claimed that he had Shannon and she was alive. He promised to leave a piece of her jewelry at the pay-phone booth where he placed the call as proof. A ring that Shannon had received from her aunt was discovered in a bag wrapped in masking tape near the phone booth. Their prime suspect was an umpire at the softball country club where she worked, Colvin Cornelious "Butch" Hinton. His residence was searched several times. He set fire to his residence 6 months later.
In August 2004, Hinton was charged with Shannon's abduction and murder. He pleaded not guilty, but was convicted in September 2005 and given a life sentence. In July 2006, he confessed.
