UPDATE: Detroit's medical examiner said a preliminary autopsy shows the 52-year-old singer died by hanging.

A talented man with a phenomenal voice...... gone too soon!! My sympathies go out to his family & friends.
:heartbreaking:

Just stopped by to pay my respects. One of my favourite bands/singers, such an incredible voice.

RIP Chris, raising a glass to you tonight.

perhaps his wife contacted the friend simply because she could not reach CC via phone, etc. and only THEN began to fret. Regardless, this one hits hard. Rest easy big fella.

Medical examiner: Chris Cornell's death ruled suicide by hanging

My favourite vocal of his was on Hunger Strike.

But I also really loved Pretty Noose, but given the circumstances, I won't be listening to that track for a while.

From the four 'biggest' grunge bands (Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam) three of the four lead singers have died of suicide / overdoses - Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley and Chris Cornell.

Not to mention Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon and Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots.

So much talent! :(

Beat still my heart. Shannon Hoon. :(

I understand and that is what TMZ is reporting.

My thing is, my husband travels for work we talk daily multiple times. BUT when he misses calls from me I don't automatically think something is wrong. I think he must have had a late night working and went to sleep. My thought does not go to calling someone to check on him.

It's hard to deal w/or rationalize suicide. Especially knowing how hard life can feel at times. I don't like when a famous person does it because I'm afraid for people to think they have a connection and that suicide is an option. Of course being an emotional feeling human, it just hurts me that another human doesn't want to experience the life they have made. The spouse, the kids. The job. Whatevr it is. And if that's not making them feel good then talk and figure it out so this isn't what u leave ur family(fans) with.
We didnt even plug the radio in at wrk today. 101 wrif & 89x the local 'rock' stations nothing but this all day. I can't celebrate a life that the person didnt want...so sad all around.

Next to Layne Staley there wasn't a more beautiful haunting voice.

I am bummed!

RIP

CC & LS had amazing voices. Soundgarden and Alice and Chains are both on my list of all time favorites!!! IMO suicide is the hardest death to grieve. My heart aches for his family and friends.

I'm guessing your husband doesn't have a history of drug abuse though. Even a long-recovered drug addict is always at risk of that "just one" hit that turns out to be their last.

While that's not what happened here, it's reasonable to think it would have been a concern of anyone who knows a current or former drug addict, especially one working in a world (rock) where drugs are everywhere.
