''More tornadoes possible in the South over the weekend

The line of storms that produced the severe weather across the South on Friday night may bring more tornadoes and storms to the region over the weekend.

The storms, which have weakened significantly, are pushing through the Carolinas and Georgia Saturday morning, creating a marginal risk for severe weather through early Saturday afternoon from South Carolina to north Florida as storms may produce damaging winds and a brief tornado.''

Search and rescue crews are looking for survivors after a deadly tornado tore through Mississippi’s Midwest region, killing at least 23 people. NBC’s Priscilla Thompson reports.
Twenty-five of the 26 who died were in Mississippi, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. In announcing the higher death toll Saturday afternoon, MEMA said four people who were missing had been accounted for.

Storm chasers Zachary Hall, 28, and Frankie Shepherd, 26, were some of the first people on the ground in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, after a “violent” tornado ripped through the community Friday night.

Hall, of Greenwood, Arkansas, said they knew a tornado was about to hit and started honking their horn to warn residents. He said the National Weather Service had sent out an alert about 12 minutes before the tornado touched down, but the pair did not hear sirens go off.

“We started honking our horn trying to get people’s attention because I do not remember tornado sirens going off in that town. There was a tornado warning from the National Weather Service, but I do not remember tornado sirens, so we were honking the horn,” he said.

As tornadoes descended on Mississippi Friday night, owners and employees at a Rolling Fork diner survived severe winds by sheltering together in the restaurant's walk-in refrigerator. The rest of the restaurant was completely destroyed, photos show.

The group of eight people huddled inside the walk-in cooler at Chuck's Dairy Bar could feel powerful winds pushing the refrigerator along the ground, owner Tracy Harden told USA TODAY. Harden, 48, answered a phone number listed online for the diner Saturday.

Her husband Tim, employees and a few customers knew the storm was coming Friday night, Harden said, and were trying to seek shelter at the diner.

All of a sudden the lights flickered and somebody hollered, ‘Cooler!’” and everyone rushed inside while her husband fought against the wind to close the refrigerator door, Harden said.

“Before the door closed, he could see the sky,” she said. “It hit that fast.”

"Just as he got it closed, he said, 'The roof is gone,'" Harden said.

''The warning issued by the U.S. National Weather Service as the storm hit didn't mince words: "To protect your life, TAKE COVER NOW!"

'All the ingredients were there'

Preliminary information based on estimates from storm reports and radar data indicate that the tornado was on the ground for more than an hour and traversed at least 274 kilometres, said Lance Perrilloux, a meteorologist with the weather service's office in Jackson, Miss.

"That's rare — very, very rare," he said, attributing the long path to widespread atmospheric instability. "All the ingredients were there."
